Message from Ms. Joanna Message from Ms. Joanna

Dear PS 107 Families,

This is the last Wednesday Weekly of 2024, and I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude for this extraordinary community that consistently goes above and beyond to support our students and staff members. Thank you for all that you do to make PS 107 the incredibly special place that it is!

Speaking of which, I would like to thank all of the parent volunteers who have made this past week such a special one at PS 107:

  • Huge thanks to Zoe Young, Mike and Margaux Turchiano, Carissa Kelly, and Carla Shaw who helped Ms Ali haul mulch and soil into our new-and-improved garden – all in the pouring rain! You are all my heroes!

  • Thank you to Diana Gatschet and Meghan Hartley for leading the charge to make all of our staff members feel so special during the annual Holiday Potluck last Friday. And thank you to all of the families who contributed to this community-wide effort. We felt the love!

  • Big thanks to Francesca Furlan for stepping up to organize our annual Holiday Craft Fair this past Saturday. With assistance from Sunny Hwang, Julie Schmidt, and Amber Fox, this event was a huge success. I love that we have student vendors at the craft fair, many of whom donated their proceeds back to our school and to other worthy causes. They truly exemplify what’s written into our mission statement: that student agency creates change and that our entire community has the power to build a more equitable world.

RECENT THEFTS AT PS 107

As some of you may have heard, we have recently experienced a number of thefts in our school building. Over the course of a three-week period, field trip and book fair money was taken from a classroom; two staff wallets went missing; and one after-school staff member’s credit card disappeared. We are working collaboratively with the NYPD and School Safety to tighten up security measures to ensure that this does not happen again. I also want to thank the many members of our community who stepped up to replace the missing classroom funds so that we could move forward with all of the wonderful experiences we had planned for our students. I will continue to keep you updated on this evolving situation.

SEEKING VOLUNTEER DEBATE JUDGES!

Any former high school debate team members out there? Our district participates in the New York City Urban Debate League, and while PS 107 does not currently have a debate team, the district is looking for volunteer judges to support at upcoming tournaments on January 8th (elementary school tournament) and January 14th (middle school tournament). If you would like to volunteer as a judge to support our larger district community, please sign up here. Side note: if there are parents interested in coaching a PS 107 debate team next year, please reach out to me. We’d love to bring debate to our students (former HS debater here!), but we do not currently have the staff capacity to coach a team.

I wish all of you a happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year! We will see your children on Thursday, January 2nd, the first day back from the holiday break.

Warmly,

Ms Joanna

PS Please note that Monday, 12/23 is now part of the Winter Recess, which will run from December 23rd through January 1st.

THE CITYWIDE DIGITAL LIBRARY ON SORA

NYCPS is committed to bringing literacy to children across the city, and I’m happy to share a resource that will make reading even easier for your children. The Citywide Digital Library on Sora is a free reading service that provides digital books through Sora, the reading app.

The Citywide Digital Library is provided by the NYCPS Office of Library Services and is an online library for all NYC public school students to access 24/7. It’s a fun, simple way for your children to access books at home, on the weekends, or during school breaks.

The collection features thousands of ebooks, audiobooks, read-along books, magazines, comics, and graphic novels.

How does it work?

Your children can log in with their NYCPS email address, ending in @nycstudents.net.

You can get to Sora by downloading the free Sora app from the Apple app store, Google Play store or visit soraapp.com/library/nycschools.

Where can I find more information?

Visit discoversora.com/nyc for more information.

FAIR FARES NYC

Fair Fares NYC is a City program created to help New Yorkers with low incomes manage their transportation costs. For more information, please visit the FAIR FARES NYC website.

REMINDERS & HELPFUL TIPS

NYC SCHOOLS ACCOUNT - NYCSA

This is a NYC DOE parent account for students grades K - 12 that enables parents/guardians to view all of their children’s records - grades, fitnessgrams, attendance, your child’s DOE email, etc. At least one parent/guardian will need to have access to this account.

We strongly encourage all parents/guardians to have their own account. Any parent with children in grades k-5 who does not have their own NYSCA , please contact nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov for instructions and your unique account creation code.

OPEROO

Please email Nadia if you would like to be added to Operoo for your child. When families apply in MySchools, only one parent is listed and that is the parent that rolls up to Operoo. If you send a request to be added to an account, it will usually be completed within a 24 hour timeframe on school days :)

MAKING SCHOOL DAY DISMISSAL PICK-UP CHANGES

If there is a change to your child’s dismissal, please be sure to note the change on the Daily Dismissal form in Operoo. If it is a same day change, please email your child’s teacher and cc Nadia at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov in addition to making any changes on the Daily Dismissal form. You can also contact the main office at 718-499-2054.

MAKING AFTERSCHOOL DISMISSAL CHANGES

If you need to add a new pick up person for your child in afterschool, please make sure to update this on 6Crickets (Click Here). Afterschool and PS 107 partner in many ways, but not with our information applications. They can't access Operoo and we can't access 6Crickets.

Thank you for your assistance in ensuring your child's safety 😊

LOWER GRADES

Please be sure to send your children to school with a full change of clothes. Accidents can happen easily when they are younger as they often get distracted and don’t check in with their bodies. Please be sure to return your child with a new set the next day if they need to be replaced.

LABEL!

Please parents, remember to label your student’s water bottles, lunch boxes, backpacks, and clothing with their full name (last names are essential!) and if there is space, please include their class number. We want to be able to return all fabulous items to their rightful owner!

IDENTIFICATION

When entering the school building you must present your ID to the safety agent when signing in.

One helpful tip is to take a picture of your id. Often, we will have our phone with us even if we don’t have our id. This way, you always have it handy :)
