Canaan Middle School Update
September 1st, 2023
Principal Corner
Canaan Families,
We are off and running! As you can see in many of our pictures throughout the newsletter, we have had many great beginning-of-the-year events and activities for our students. They have had several get-to-know-you activities, band visits, and much more. We are now settling into our typical school year routines and schedules and students have done a great job adjusting.
Now that the students have adjusted to their schedule, we want to invite parents and guardians to hear from our staff about all things Canaan Middle School. The goal of these evenings is to make sure that families also feel comfortable with their student's school structure and setup. We will cover many topics such as the schedule, Canvas, communication through TalkingPoints and email, homework, WIN period, and more. We would love to see our 5th-grade parents and guardians on September 5th (please see below for specific times and locations) and 6th-grade families on September 20th. Please reach out if you have any questions!

5th Grade Update
In 5th grade math, we have started unit 1 in Bridges which includes multiplication, expressions, and volume. We have started to explore and review different multiplication strategies. Students have been using these strategies along with omnifix cubes to help a business owner find the different combinations to ship out 24 baseballs to his customers.
5th Grade Parent/Guardian Night Information
On September 5th, we will hold a Parent/Guardian Night. Our goal is to share "all things 5th grade" with you and answer any questions that you might have. This is an informational meeting for parents/guardians and students are not expected to attend. If you are not able to attend, please reach out with any questions that you might have. Below are the details of the time and location:
Students with a last name that starts with A-L - September 5th at 6:00-6:25 PM
A-F will be located in the cafeteria
G-L will be located in the library
Students with a last name that starts with M-Z - September 5th at 6:35-7:00 PM

6th Grade Update
In Science class, we have been doing group activities to work collaboratively to accomplish different challenges. We started with the Tower Bucket Challenge where students built a tower with straws to suspend a cup of pennies above the desk. The goal was ten pennies, some groups built a tower that exceeded the goal! The second challenge was creating a Puff Mobile.

Common Sense Media
Common Sense Media is an online tool that can help parents and students make informed decisions regarding media use. This tool can be used for many types of media, including books, movies, video games, and apps.
Canvas is a Learning Management System that is used in grades 5-12 at Jonathan Alder. You and your student will find a lot of information about the school and your student's classroom through this platform. It is VERY important to stay connected and log on to Canvas. This link should help you log on and explain Canvas.
Talking Points
We are excited to share that our staff members will be using a safe and easy to
use two way communication tool called TalkingPoints to communicate with
families. Families have three easy ways to use TalkingPoints to communicate
with their children’s teachers for free! You can use text message, download the
app or use it on the web at https://talkingpts.org/families/. Once you log in to
Talking Points, you should be able to see your students and teachers.
