AR: Accelerated Reader
It's time for AR! Now, you are probably groaning because AR has gotten a really bad rap over the years - but let me explain!
AR is used in place of the old fashioned reading logs - remember those? You know, the ones where all you had to do was write down that you read, but nobody really knew if you did or not? Nobody could tell if you were understanding what you reading? You just filled it out, got your family to sign it and then all was good? Yeah - we had those too!! The problem is just what I stated above - there was really no accountability. The whole point of students reading on their own is to help them improve! Here's more information about AR:
1. Students reading scores on Fastbridge helps the teacher determine each child's reading level. This helps them with setting their goal. Each student's goal is different because it is determined by reading level. We never want the goal to be out of reach for the student, that is why the teachers make them individualized.
2. After students read or listen to a story/book, they can take an AR Quiz. This quiz is 5-10 questions based upon the book. This helps to ensure students are reading and understanding what they are reading. Often students may be able to read fluently, but they may not understand or retain what they have read. This helps the teacher and the student see if that is an area that needs attention. We do expect students to have at least 85% accuracy in their comprehension. This is what helps them earn their points.
3. If students read 20 minutes a night, they can meet their goal each 9 weeks!
4. We want every student to be able to celebrate their AR success. If you think your child will need assistance, reach out! Let's set everyone up for success and not wait until the last minute.
5. Lastly, if your child does not make their quarterly AR goal- it is ok. This is the age and stage where we learn about successes and failures. Failures are the BEST lessons- and we can fail forward! That means we mess up, we fail, but we pick ourselves up and do better. Not meeting your AR goal in elementary is a great stepping stone lesson for when the stakes are higher in middle and high school. I'm always so proud of the kids who miss the mark and then come back stronger!
AR is an opportunity for students to learn important life skills, above and beyond reading. It is a chance to practice goal setting, time management and accountability. Sit down with your student and look at a calendar, help them figure out how to break down their goal into smaller weekly goals. This type of planning, learning to look ahead to what you want to accomplish and figuring out how to get it all done are skills that will benefit them long past their time at BES! If your child doesn't make their goal, IT IS GOING TO BE OKAY. They won't feel that way, but know that the disappointment that comes will likely spur them on to do it differently next time and meet their goal. Let them be uncomfortable and let them learn from that. We will be here to support them and to support you!
mySAEBRS Parental Consent
Our school will be administering the mySAEBRS universal screener through FastBridge the week of September 7, 2025. mySAEBRS is taken by students in grades 3-12 and takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. mySAEBRS (my Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) is a brief tool for screening students to identify those who may benefit from social-emotional behavior (SEB) supports.
We believe this survey is a valuable tool because mySAEBRS can be used to identify students who may be at risk for social, academic, and emotional behaviors. By evaluating, in which of the three specific domains a student may be at risk, we may determine what type of supports are most appropriate. For example, if a student may benefit from emotional supports, then we may target emotional behaviors via the application of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs. As a school, our goal is to always communicate with the family when we provide additional tiered supports for our students.
Participation is voluntary and you or your child may decline to participate. However, we believe participation is important. This data is a helpful piece in identifying needs and providing timely support and resources. More information can be found at: https://www.illuminateed.com/products/fastbridge/social-emotional-behavior-assessment/mysaebrs/
Before parents provide consent, we request that they open and review the document mySAEBRS screening tool.
If you want your student to participate, please provide consent by September 7, 2025. The five-minute screener will be given to students who have parental consent by September 9, 2025.
You only need to fill this out if you WANT your child to participate. Anyone without a form will not be given the screener!
Glow Bash Info!
Your family is invited to come to Wildcat Stadium from 7-9pm.
We need your help to make this successful!
- Our goal this year is $8,000. If every student collects at least $25, we will meet our goal.
- Every child who turns in their packet (even if they don’t collect any money) will receive a glow surprise at the Glow Bash. Packets can be turned in at the glow bash event or into the office.
- Have your child dressed up in their favorite GLOW gear Kids/Families can walk their laps around the track and play games at the stadium. We will not be inside BES this year.
- We will have glow items for sale in our Wildcat Glow Bash store!
- Food trucks will be available for eats and treats!
Donations raised will help fund items such as field trips, books sets, end-of-year parties, our YEARLY CHIEFS SUPER BOWL EXTRAVAGANZA, and more!
Prizes:
· The grade that collects the most money will win a special day of PE using the inflatables!
· The student that collects the most money in each grade will get lunch out with Mrs. Apple!
· The top collecting student at the school will be Principal for the Day!
You may begin collecting donations immediately. We encourage everyone to ask family, friends, co-workers, etc. Some employers may have matching donation programs. Please DO NOT let your child go door-to-door to collect donations. Donations in the form of a check made payable to BES are the most secure way for students to transport money back to school.
Donations may be made with Venmo using the QR code., which you can share on your social media pages for those far away to donate. Very important—Please include “Glowbash-Student Name” in the 'what this is for' box in Venmo. Thank you to our PTO for helping us with Venmo donations!
McIntire's Mindset
This week we begin talking about the mindset, WE ARE CONNECTED! This mindset gets us thinking about embracing everyone, noticing the relationships that make you better, identifying your 'dream team' and leading with value. This is a great time to talk to your student about their friendships or relationships with others ~ how do they contribute to them, who makes them feel good about themselves, what can they do to help others? We have a Wildcat family - we cheer for purple. We have our BES family - we all deserve to come to school and feel safe and welcomed. We have classroom families - we work together
to make this a place to learn and become our best.
Together, we are better!
Changes in Traffic for Home Varsity Football Games
In an effort to keep everyone safe as they travel into the football stadium complex and to keep
the traffic flow moving, the district is going to change the traffic pattern around the
Broadmoor/Football Complex before home, varsity football games. This change in traffic flow
will ONLY be for the HOME, VARSITY FOOTBALL GAMES. Currently, the scheduled home games
are on September 12th , October 3rd , October 10th and October 17th . If we host playoff games, we
would have the same traffic pattern. Please review the two maps. Before the game, from 5:30
pm to 7:30 pm, traffic will be two-way off of Metcalf and 8th Street. Signage and a police officer
will be at this location before the game. There will be cones allowing two-way traffic during
this time. Visitors may still enter off of 5th Street, between Broadmoor and the stadium. Before
and after the game, the west side of Broadmoor is northbound only. After the game, the traffic
pattern will be as it always is around this campus. Once again, this is only for home, varsity
football games.
We also would appreciate that no one park on the east side of the Broadmoor playground.
This area has been marked “No Parking.” Your help with keeping this area free of
parked vehicles is appreciated.
All school traffic and all other football and soccer games will have the normal traffic. We
appreciate you helping cheer on our Wildcats and we want everyone to be safe as they enter
and exit our stadium.

Attendance and School Calendar
Please take note of our school calendars when planning your family's vacations.
Attendance is a focus at BES and we want your children at school! It can be very difficult for students to get caught up sometimes when they miss for extended periods of time. For example, when a student misses a week of school, that is up to 450 minutes of math instruction they are missing!
If your family does have a trip planned, we do not provide lessons or materials ahead of those trips. Teachers will work with you to schedule times when your student can be given that instruction and guided work time to ensure mastery of skills. This may have to happen before or after school, but we will also try to work during the school day as well.
GREAT school habits now help prepare students for future success!
