HEALTHY DIETS SUPPORT HEALTHY HEARTS

February is Heart Health Awareness Month and focuses on cardiovascular health and heart disease prevention. Right now, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. However, there is good news... About 80% of heart disease and stroke cases are preventable through healthy lifestyle changes, such as improved diet, exercise, and managing blood pressure.

WUS Food Services is dedicated to supporting heart health for our students by:

  • Serving low-sodium items
  • Incorporating whole grains
  • Following portion-size and balanced diet requirements
  • Offering multiple fruit and vegetable choices at all meals

Wayland follows all USDA regulations for school meals under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. These regulations set standards for including whole-grain rich foods, sodium reduction, sugar & calorie restrictions, and fruit and vegetable offerings. Following these regulations leads to a more healthy and balanced diet for our students.

Incorporating fruits and vegetables into one's diet is a quick, easy way to boost heart health! Because students are more likely to actually eat their fruits and vegetables if they self-select them, Wayland proudly offers fruit and vegetable bars at each of our cafeterias throughout the district! Students are given multiple options and are encouraged to self-select their healthy side items at each meal. We locally source our fruits and vegetables whenever possible and try to include some not-so-well-known items as well to bring choice and variety to our students. With these fruit and vegetable bars, healthy options are abundant!

Why It Matters...

Healthy eating habits can last a lifetime and make the most impact if started EARLY. We encourage healthy food choices starting with our preschool students, all the way up through our High School students. This is a nonconfrontational way to offer and encourage healthy eating starting at an early age and hopefully help create healthier hearts for a lifetime!

DORR ELEMENTARY

After rescheduling Smoothie Bike Day due to a few snow days in January, students at Dorr Elementary were finally able to enjoy this fun event on Friday, February 20th! To say students had been looking forward to this day, would be an understatement! Students always have a fun time when the Smoothie Bike appears in their lunch room, but these students were beyond EXCITED!

Students were able to ride the bike to power the blender and then try some delicious smoothies! This fun and interactive opportunity is a great way to get the students engaged in preparing food AND trying some new flavors and food combinations!

We received a LOT of thumbs-up, smiles, and high-fives from students! This was a fun and successful Smoothie Bike Day, with students saying, "I loved it one MILLION percent!" and "These are SO GOOD! I'm going to ask to make these at home!"

GREAT job to all the students at Dorr Elementary who were patient, polite, and open to all that comes with Smoothie Bike Day!

Want to create smoothies at home? Feel free to try our simple recipe or add to it with your favorite fruits!
