Communication Corner
Strong language skills are the foundation for reading, writing, learning, and building relationships. This article highlights nine simple, research-based strategies that families and educators can use to support children's language development, including asking open-ended questions, reading and singing together, encouraging back-and-forth conversations, and helping children express themselves in complete sentences. The great news is that many of these strategies can be easily incorporated into everyday routines at home. We encourage you to take a few minutes to read the article and discover practical ways to strengthen your child's communication skills and support their long-term academic success.

Around the School
Shadowlawn has been buzzing with excitement as we've kicked off our 26-27 school year! Here's some pics from around the school during our first few weeks.
September Student of the Month
We had a wonderful time celebrating our September Students of the Month!
PreK
Pre-K has been very busy this month. We are learning how to work and get along with each other. We are also learning to recognize the letters in our name.
Kindergarten
Our kindergarteners had a wonderful September filled with learning and exciting experiences! During math, students are using hands-on manipulatives to explore and practice new math skills in a fun and meaningful way. We also enjoyed a special visit from Red E. Fox, who taught our students about 9-1-1, emergencies, and how to get help when they need it.
1st Grade
Our students have been learning through creativity, collaboration, and hands-on experiences! From using drawing tablets to showcase subtraction strategies, to designing kimonos inspired by a read-aloud about being true to yourself, students are putting their learning into action. They also explored kindness and helping others following our Hands Are for Helping presentation.
2nd Grade
The second graders reviewed their addition and subtraction skills through an engaging search-and-rescue activity. Working with a partner, students solved each math problem and then searched for the answer in order to unlock the next one.
3rd Grade
This month in third grade we enjoyed learning about instruments on our first field trip to The Artis of Naples. Students are also working hard mastering multiplication facts, Aiden was the first to get his trophy! We started our novel study diving deep into Charlotte’s Web where we are studying how characters develop and change in a story. We are amazed at how we are already reaching so many of our goals!
4th Grade
Our 4th grade school year has started off very well. In math, we focused on place value relationships and are now working on multiplying using an area model and a standard algorithm. In ELA, a focus has been on key word strategies and maintaining student accelerated reading expectations. In science, an emphasis on Florida’s natural resources, combined with matter and change has been taught.
October 2nd FGCU Panther Posse Field Trip
October 13th- Artis Naples Field Trip
October 20th-Science Night
5th Grade
Fifth graders have been working with all things decimals this month! From comparing and rounding to adding and subtracting, students have been using a variety of strategies to understand and solve real-world problems. Additionally, students have been practicing their multiplication fact fluency as they begin using algorithms to find the products of multi-digit numbers.
PE: Physical Education
In Physical education this week we were playing super fun tag games! Students were working on their cardiovascular fitness and their spatial awareness during the amazing activities!
