We also welcome our Grandparents to The Ranch and invite them to join in a lesson in class to see how education has evolved from the time they were in school.

We also kick-off our Homecoming week and unite as a Feeder Pattern Community to celebrate our Falcon Homecoming Week.

Please take a moment to review the information below as we share the following:

  • Grandparents Day information
  • Homecoming Week Information

Lockdown Drill this week

The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) requires schools to schedule and hold drills for different safety protocols. For the last week , students will be learning about the LOCKDOWN DRILL

LOCKDOWN is called when there is a threat or hazard inside the school building. From parental custody disputes to intruders to an active shooter, Lockdown uses classroom and school security actions to protect students and staff from threat.

The Lockdown Protocol demands locking individual classroom doors, offices and other securable areas, moving room occupants out of line of sight of corridor windows and having room occupants maintain silence. Teachers, staff, and student training reinforces the practice of not opening the classroom door, once in Lockdown. Rather, no indication of occupancy should be revealed until first responders open the door.

Drills

In Texas, Lockdown drills must be performed at least twice per school year, once per semester.

Grandparents Day Event

Our Grandparent's Day at the Ranch is on Monday, September 11. Two grandparents per student will be invited to observe and participate in a lesson in their grandchild's classroom. Please note that we understand not all of our students have grandparents that can attend. This event is inclusive in that grandparents become part of the classroom participating in instruction, ensuring those without visitor do not feel excluded.

If grandparents have multiple students on campus, it is their responsibility to manage their time during the hour event to visit those classrooms. At 9:30 am, we will clear the building and resume our normal schedule. Grandparents of fourth and fifth grade students will need to travel to the modular building to visit those classrooms.

The flyer going home with students serve as their two tickets allowing them to enter the campus for the event through the front office entrance. Please make sure your child’s teacher and room number information are completed on the flyer so our volunteers may help our visitors get to those classrooms. Grandparents must bring this flyer with the when attending the event. Additional tickets/flyers will not be available.

We would like to remind parents of the following to ensure our grandparents are not exposed to circumstances beyond their capabilities. These circumstances are out of our control and we would like to bring you awareness.

  • Consider our terrain if they need to go to Modular classrooms for 4th and 5th grade students. Our campus is large, and they will have to walk to multiple buildings.
  • The hallways may be filled with other adults making it difficult to walk through the hallways.
  • There are 22 students per classroom (28 in 5th) and each child has had an opportunity to invite grandparents. Classrooms may be tight with adults and seating will be limited. Adults will have to stand around the classroom in the event there are no seats available.

Thank you all again for your support.

Walk a Mile in her Shoes

At The Ranch (Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary),We are proud to support organizations making a difference in our community.

We are very proud to announce that our male educators will be taking part in this year's YWCA Walk a mile in her shoes event. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes supports YWCA El Paso's Sara McKnight Transitional Living Center for survivors of domestic violence. At this event, we ask men to walk in high-heeled shoes to actively engage in solidarity in confronting gender stereotypes and expectations. Together we can face the root causes of many gender violence instances.

Below you will see the accounts for the gentlemen that will be walking. Please take a moment to support our team members. We have other team members that will be joining. As soon as they do, we will share their links

Traffic

Student Safety and Community Safety is our priority. It takes a second for an accident to occur and for this reason, we need to make sure that we have a clear mind and are not rushed when we approach our campus.

General

  • Remember to be courteous to all drivers.
  • Please refrain from honking or cutting drivers off. We need to always be courteous to each other. We are part of the same community.
  • We understand that we do not have enough parking for all parents. All schools struggle with parking. Please be aware of where you are driving and who is around you.
  • Always use crosswalks or approach administration or support personnel to cross you. We are our children's roll models. Would you like your child to think it is safe to cross anywhere down a street?

Car Drop-Off Etiquette

Car drop-off must be used by students that are independent enough to exit their vehicles with their backpacks on. Support your parent community by doing the following.

  • Always remain in your vehicle. *If you need to exit your vehicle to help your child, then your option should be to park and walk your child.
  • Always park at the top of the lane, first sign. Please do not stop at the door walkway. This limits the number of kids that can exit the vehicle.
  • Make sure students are ready to exit the vehicle. If your child requires much assistance from you, please park as you are encouraged to not exit your vehicle.

Car-pick-up Etiquette

  • Always display on your DASHBOARD your YELLOW car sign. If you do not have a car sign, please park to pick up your child.
  • Do not exit your vehicle. Always remain in your vehicle. We will bring your child to you.
  • Never park in our pick-up area
  • Do not utilize the exterior or 2nd lane to have kids run to you OR pass the vehicles before you.

In the event you feel a driver or parent is impacting student, please do not engage. Notify administration. We will do the following.

  • The administration will contact the parent and advise them of proper procedures
  • Second or severe offense: Vehicle information will be given to police service.

Thank you, Rattler Community, for your support. Let us make sure we keep our Rattlers safe.

Dress Code

As we enjoy our free-dress days, we are noticing some concerns with not following dress code. As a reminder, the following is not allowed on campus at any age.

  • Tops that show your mid-section such as halter-tops
  • Shorts shorter than the tips of a Childs fingers when their hand is extended on their side
  • Spaghetti straps or strapless outfits (one sided or both)
  • Long earrings that can get caught while playing
  • Acrylic long nails that effect pencil grip and can scratch other students in play.

*We must keep in mind that elementary students are very active and we must make sure that they are dressed appropriately to allow for proper movement and safe play.

Please see the link below for their student dress-code.

Cellphones or Smart Watches on Campus

We have been noticing a concern with parents calling students during the instructional day. As a reminder, the SISD cellphone policies prohibits students using cellphones during the instructional day. We allow phones as long as they are put away in student backpacks. Many teachers have implemented a holding area for cell phones to make sure they are all put away with no worry of them being lost of stolen until the end of the day. Please review SISDs Cellphone policy listed below.

22-23 Student Code of Conduct (Still in place until 23-24 Board approved update) page 29

ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES

Use of district-owned equipment and its network systems is not private and will be monitored by the district. [See policy CQ for more information.] Possession and Use of Personal Telecommunications Devices, Including Cell Phones, and Other Electronic Devices The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes; however, these devices must remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes. [For graphing calculator applications on computing devices, see Textbooks, Electronic Textbooks, Technological Equipment, and Other Instructional Materials.] A student must have approval to possess other personal telecommunications devices such as laptops, tablets, or other portable computers.

Students are not permitted to possess or use personal electronic devices at school unless prior permission has been obtained. Without such permission, teachers will collect the items and turn them in to the principal’s office. The principal will determine whether to return items to students at the end of the day or to contact parents to pick up the items.

The use of cell phones or any device capable of capturing images is strictly prohibited in locker rooms or restroom areas while at school or at a school-related or school-sponsored event. If a student uses a telecommunications device without authorization during the school day, the device will be confiscated. The parent may pick up the confiscated telecommunications device from the principal’s office for a fee of $15. Confiscated telecommunications devices that are not retrieved by the student or the student’s parent will be disposed of after the notice required by law. [See policy FNCE for more information.] In limited circumstances and in accordance with law, a student’s personal telecommunications device may be searched by authorized personnel. [See Searches and policy FNF for more information.] Any disciplinary action will be in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. The district (or campus) is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen telecommunications devices.

Campus and Student Threats are no Joke

Please take the time to talk to your children regarding the consequences that can come from making threats to an individual or campus or through social media. Socorro ISD and Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary, take all campus or student threats very seriously. Incidents that involve students making threats to other students, adults, and/or the school will be handled using the SISD Student Code of Conduct and if necessary may lead to an investigation by our campus SRO.

Please talk to your child about the consequences that come with making threats to others. We appreciate your support.
