Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 57 Community,
As we near the close of another school year, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the graduating Class of 2025. This remarkable group of seniors has shown resilience, determination, and spirit throughout their journey at Massabesic High School. Their achievements—academic, athletic, artistic, and personal—have enriched our schools and inspired their peers and educators alike.
To the graduates: Whether your next step is college, career, military service, or another path, we are incredibly proud of you. May you continue to lead with integrity, pursue your passions boldly, and never stop learning. You carry the hopes of this community with you, and we are excited to see the bright futures you will build.
To the families, educators, and staff who have supported our seniors: thank you. Your guidance, encouragement, and commitment have helped shape this moment of celebration. This milestone belongs to all of you as well.
Congratulations, Class of 2025!
Senior Night is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4th in the MHS gym at 7:00 PM
Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, June 5th at the Cross Center in Portland at 7:00 PM
As a reminder to all residents of RSU 57's six member towns—Alfred, Limerick, Lyman, Newfield, Shapleigh, and Waterboro—the school budget vote will take place on Tuesday, June 10th. This vote is an important opportunity for community members to have a voice in the future of our schools and the resources we provide to our students.
Polls will be open in each town on June 10th. Please check with your local municipality for specific polling locations and times. Your participation helps ensure that we continue to provide high-quality education and support to all students across RSU 57 as we prepare them for success in an ever changing world.
Thank you for your continued support of our schools, our staff, and most importantly, our students.
Warm regards,
Stephen D. Marquis

Exciting Animal Adventures at Alfred and Lyman Elementary
Alfred and Lyman Elementary Schools have been buzzing with excitement thanks to several special visitors who recently brought unforgettable learning experiences to our students!
Second graders at both Alfred and Lyman Elementary Schools had the unique opportunity to meet some fascinating wildlife ambassadors during a visit from the Maine Center for Wildlife. Students were introduced to Lily the Box Turtle, Zipper the Corn Snake, and Pisces the Red-Tailed Hawk. This engaging presentation gave students a fun and memorable way to learn interesting facts about native wildlife and the importance of protecting their habitats.
Additionally, Alfred Elementary Pre-K students hosted a petting zoo that welcomed all classrooms. Students met and learned about caring for baby pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, and geese. It was a fun, interactive experience that helped students understand life on a farm and how to respectfully care for animals.
These visits were a wonderful way to enrich our curriculum and create lasting memories for our students. A big thank-you to our special guests for sharing their time, knowledge, and love of animals and agriculture!
6th Grade Outdoor Learning Stations at Massabesic Middle School
Our 6th grade students had an exciting opportunity to explore the natural world through five hands-on learning stations. The stations focused on Forestry, Fish Migration, Invasive Species, Macroinvertebrates, and Predator and Prey Relationships. It was wonderful to see students engaged, learning, and having fun all at once!
Activities included simulating fish migration and the challenges fish face in waterways, a scavenger hunt to discover pond life near the school, identifying local tree species, and learning how to determine a tree’s age without cutting it down. Students also participated in an interactive activity where they took on the role of young trout, navigating the dangers of predators and searching for food.
A huge thank you to York County Soil and Water, Cumberland County Soil and Water, and the Maine Forestry Service for bringing this valuable educational experience to our MMS students!
Shapleigh Elementary Pre-K Hatching Adventures
Our Pre-K learners at Shapleigh Elementary had an unforgettable spring filled with hands-on science discoveries!
Hatching Chickens: The class had an exciting opportunity to observe baby chicks hatch from eggs. We kept the eggs in an incubator, and the class eagerly watched and waited each day, learning about the warmth and time needed for the chicks to grow. When the chicks finally began to hatch, learners were filled with wonder and excitement! They gently observed the fluffy chicks and helped care for them by making sure they had food, water, and a safe space.
Hatching Tadpoles: The children explored the life cycle of a frog by observing real eggs hatch into tadpoles. We set up a small bucket where the learners could watch the changes each day, noticing how the eggs slowly turned into wiggly tadpoles. This hands-on activity sparked curiosity and helped build early science skills as the children talked about what they saw and made predictions about what would happen next.
NJROTC Cadets Engage with Community and Honor Veterans
Our NJROTC cadets have been busy serving and representing with pride!
On May 23rd, cadets visited veterans through a special outreach coordinated with the Southern Maine Agency on Aging in Springvale. It was a meaningful experience that allowed our cadets to connect personally with those who have served our country.
Over Memorial Day Weekend, cadets proudly participated in several parades across our region, including Sanford, Alfred, Limerick, and Lyman. These events provided a public opportunity for the unit to honor the fallen, support the community, and demonstrate their ongoing commitment to service.
We’re proud of the cadets for their respectful engagement and dedication to community service!
