Principals' Message Principals' Message

Hello Viking Families!

We have almost made it to Spring! We are a couple weeks away from the end of the 3rd quarter already! Time flies when you are having FUN!

We want to thank all our volunteer readers who were able to make it into classrooms for World Read Aloud Day! It was a very successful event and it was great to see so many parents and various staff members in our building.

With the warmer weather upon us (fingers crossed), we will be getting outdoors for recess more often! We love allowing our students the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the fresh air whenever the weather permits! Warmer weather can also bring a little "spring fever" among our students. Please help us by reminding them of our Values: Teamwork, Own the Moment and Passion for Growth. Remind them about E+R=O (event + response = outcome) and that we expect "on path" behaviors to help us all be successful as we jump into our 4th quarter of school. A daily "morning mantra" may be helpful for some students. For example, before they leave the house you can say together, "I am resilient, I can train my brain, I will do the work and I am kind." Starting our day with a positive affirmation and a growth mindset helps set the tone for a great day ahead!

We are excited about the spring opportunities that will be offered to our students and families. Please see below for more information about spring dances, our upcoming flower sale, and more! We hope you have a a fun and safe March! As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.

World Read Aloud Day! World Read Aloud Day!

World Read Aloud Day was a success! Several classrooms spent the day with various visitors who read aloud to them. Some classrooms made blanket forts and brought stuffed animals and just enjoyed the presence of a good book or a great read aloud! Thank you for all who helped make it a successful and memorable day for students!

Celebrating the 100th Day! Celebrating the 100th Day!

Our Kindergarten and First graders really grew up fast!!! HA! They celebrated the 100th day of school by dressing up like they were 100 years old! The smiles on their faces that day were priceless! Some teachers used an app to transform student photos into 100 year olds! Our staff really enjoyed their outfits, hair and props! Enjoy these pictures!

R5: Make a Difference R5: Make a Difference

This month we focused on R Factor Discipline #5: Make a Difference. Disciplines 1-4 focus on how well we manage ourselves and this moth we zeroed in on how our R (response) can create an E (event) for others. The goal of Make a Difference is to manage our R so that we are delivering a great experience to others. We have the ability each and every day to make a positive difference, but we also have the ability to make a negative one and the choice is ours in how well we manage our R. We helped our students understand that the way we make a difference is with our ACTIONS, our ATTITUDES, and our WORDS. To truly Make a Difference, we must OWN THE MOMENT, which is one of our 3 values here at Scioto. We have to take complete ownership over our interactions with others.

So we encouraged our students and staff to think, "What kind of E are you creating for others?

Check out the video clips below that we showed students that demonstrate each of these concepts: Action, Attitude and Words

We Make a Difference with our ACTIONS: We Make a Difference with our ACTIONS:

Frozen - An Act of True Love

We Make a Difference with our ATTITUDE:

Moana - I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors) (HD)

We Make a Difference with our WORDS:

Luca - Ending scene

Talking to Kids About Current Events by Ariana Hoet, PhD

As much as we would like to protect our children’s mental health, thoughts and feelings by shielding them from scary news or current events, they often become aware of them due to conversations with peers at school or through social media.

What is the best thing we can do as parents and caregivers when these things happen?

We can start a conversation with our children so they’re getting correct information and have an opportunity to share how they are feeling.

Click here to read the full article including tips for how to talk to your children about current events and how families can cope with stress during these times.

The Specials Team The Specials Team

Library

February has been filled with learning about and revisiting our old friend the Dewey Decimal System! All grades were challenged with the DDS call number game! Most grade levels asked to do it again, so that game may re-emerge in the near future!!

Music

Grades K-2 are learning "choreography" (planned movement) to some of our songs, and they've started to use click-sticks to explore steady pulse and rhythm patterns. Grades 3-5 have had their first round of "SyllaBELLS!", a literacy-based handbell activity using charts with highlighted syllables to play resonator bells and rhythm instruments.

Gym

The world of physical education we are moving and grooving. Grades K-3 are learning about relay races with bucket stacking and topple tubes. It is quite entertaining to watch the enthusiasm and competitiveness come out. Grades 4-5 and continuing their floor hockey experience playing for NHL teams. I have enjoyed seeing all the blue jackets attire but growing up in Pittsburgh can you guess my team?

Celebrating and Honoring Black History Month Celebrating and Honoring Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, students and staff took the opportunity to learn about many black leaders who have made a positive difference in our world. Each day on our morning announcements we learned about an important black leader and their contribution to our world. Each Wednesday during ouR time students participated in a lesson to learn more about black American history.
