High School News and Notes 10/2/2026 High School News and Notes 10/2/2026

PSAT Day: Next Week, Thursday, October 8th PSAT Day: Next Week, Thursday, October 8th

On Thursday, October 8th, BBHHS will operate an adjusted bell schedule for students in grades 9-11 to administer the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10/NMSQT. This is a mandatory test day for all underclassmen. The PSAT/NMSQT is an excellent way for students to gain exposure to preparing for college entrance exams and to receive specific feedback regarding students' academic areas of need and strength compared to a norm-referenced population. The NMSQT, taken by our juniors, is also used to determine National Merit Scholars and Scholarship opportunities.

The general testing sessions are expected to conclude around 11:30 a.m. Please be aware that dismissal times vary for all students and are based on factors such as individual student learning plans and test proctor session start times. If you wish for your student NOT to be released from campus following the PSAT and to remain in a study hall session, please complete the form linked below.

PSAT Remain on Campus Opt-In Form

*Please be aware that if you fill out the form above, your student MUST remain in a quiet cafeteria study hall from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 pm when the buses arrive. There will be no buses immediately following testing. Any student taking a bus home, must remain in the cafe study hall until 2:45 pm.

On Friday, October 2nd, BBHHS students will receive their testing room assignments and directions via their school email account. Preparation resources can be found on the College Board website. Students can also use their College Board account to access past PSAT results and prepare aligned study materials using Khan Academy for free. Please note that, due to SB29, students must use a private email address and device to access Khan Academy as a resource.

Seniors will be excused from school on this day to complete college applications, schedule their final college visitation day, or set up their career shadowing day experience.

Did You Know~ Attendance Policies and State Law Did You Know~ Attendance Policies and State Law

As we continue through the 2026–2027 school year, we want to make families aware of important changes to Ohio’s attendance requirements and explain two terms you may hear throughout the year: Chronic Absenteeism and Habitual Truancy.

While these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they are very different from one another. Most importantly, chronic absenteeism includes both excused and unexcused absences, while truancy is based specifically on unexcused absences.

ALL ABSENCES COUNT!

Under Ohio law, ALL ABSENCES COUNT, toward Chronic Absenteeism collection. For awareness, attendance is calculated in hours and minutes, not simply days. As a result, repeated tardiness, early dismissals, appointments, and partial-day absences accumulate over the course of the school year.

A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the instructional time in the school year, regardless of the reason for the absence.

This means that time missed for both excused and unexcused reasons counts toward chronic absenteeism, including:

Student Illness

Medical, Dental, or Behavioral Health Appointments

Family Illness/Funerals

Religious Holidays

College Visits

Late Arrivals and Early Dismissals

Other Excused or Unexcused Absences

A student does not need to miss long stretches of school to become chronically absent. Missing approximately one to two days per month can result in a student reaching the chronic absenteeism threshold by the end of the year.

DISTINCTION BETWEEN CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM VS. HABITUAL TRUANCY

Chronic Absenteeism

Counts all missed instructional time, including both excused and unexcused absences. Its purpose is to identify students who are missing significant instructional time and may benefit from additional support.

Habitual Truancy
Is based specifically on unexcused absences. Ohio's truancy requirements remain in effect and establish specific thresholds for excessive unexcused absences. When those thresholds are reached, schools must follow additional intervention requirements, which can ultimately include involvement with juvenile court when required by law.

THE 5% ATTENDANCE NOTIFICATION

One of the significant changes this year is earlier communication with families.

Schools are required to notify families no later than when a student has missed 5% of the minimum required instructional hours, regardless of whether those absences were excused or unexcused.

For many students, this equates to approximately 45–50 hours of missed instructional time.

Receiving a 5% attendance notification does not mean that your child is truant or that your family has done something wrong. It is intended to make families aware of accumulated instructional time and provide an opportunity for the school and family to address attendance concerns before a student reaches the chronic absenteeism threshold.

Therefore, a student could have excellent documentation for every absence and still be considered chronically absent, while not being considered habitually truant.

Why Attendance Matters

These changes are designed to encourage schools and families to identify attendance concerns earlier rather than waiting until a significant amount of instructional time has already been lost.

At BBHHS, our goal is not simply to send attendance letters or meet a state requirement. We want to work collaboratively with families to understand why a student may be missing school and, when appropriate, identify supports that can help.

We also recognize that students become ill, have medical appointments, experience family emergencies, and encounter circumstances that legitimately require them to miss school. An absence may absolutely be excused while still counting toward the state's chronic absenteeism calculation. That distinction is important for families to understand.

If you receive an attendance notification from BBHHS, we encourage you to review your child's attendance record and contact the school if you have questions or believe there is an error. Our administrative and attendance teams are happy to work with you.

Regular attendance remains one of the most important factors in keeping students connected to their teachers, classmates, coursework, and the many opportunities available at BBHHS.

Partnernship for a Healthy Community and CAPA Partnernship for a Healthy Community and CAPA

We are excited to introduce a new Word of the Month initiative for our high school students and families, beginning this October with Respect.

This CAPA initiative, created in collaboration with the Partnership for Healthy Community, is designed to encourage meaningful conversations between parents and teens around important character traits. Each month, we’ll highlight a new word and encourage families to explore what that trait looks like in everyday life, while also finding opportunities to recognize and celebrate examples of it.

These same character traits will also be incorporated into activities during the school day, giving students opportunities to learn about and practice each word in their daily interactions.

Our monthly words also align with the Elementary School’s Character Strong Words of the Month, creating a consistent focus on character development across our district.

Bus Evacuation Drills — October 12–14 Bus Evacuation Drills — October 12–14

Please be aware that bus evacuation drills will take place October 12–14. Ohio requires schools to conduct three emergency exit drills annually for students who regularly ride school buses. During these drills, students practice the three required evacuation procedures: exiting through the front entrance, exiting through the rear emergency door, and a split evacuation in which the front half exits through the front and the rear half exits through the rear. Students leave belongings on the bus and, after evacuating, assemble at least 100 feet away from the bus until receiving further direction. The drills are conducted on school property when possible and are supervised by a staff member in addition to the bus driver. These exercises provide students with important practice in safely and efficiently exiting a bus should an emergency occur.

This Week at BBHHS This Week at BBHHS

This week at BBHHS brought a wonderful homecoming celebration and plenty of reasons to recognize our Bees! A gorgeous evening provided the perfect setting for our homecoming dance, and our students were outstanding. By nearly all accounts, they had a terrific time making memories. We cannot thank our event sponsors, Event Source and John Bibbo and Ganley Auto Group and Ken Ganley, enough for their continued generous support. A special thank you also goes to Mr. Pichette, our Student Government advisor, for his leadership and dedication to making this event a success. Congratulations to our new Homecoming Queen, Adriana Tatara, and King, Bryce Lennon! We look forward to your reign at BBHHS!

We also proudly honored our seniors in girls golf, boys golf, volleyball, and boys soccer, celebrating their dedication and contributions to their teams. Our girls golf and tennis seasons came to an end at sectionals following a very strong year. Congratulations to the players and coaches on a season they can be proud of! On the boys side, Owen Naso and Luke Kasmarack qualified for districts next week. We wish them the best as they continue their postseason journey.

Our volleyball team continues preparing for postseason play, while both our boys and girls soccer teams continue to deliver strong performances. The boys remain among the top-ranked teams in Division II, building excitement as tournament play approaches.

Finally, a huge shoutout to Zack Aquila for his strong showing at Who’s Number One, a premier preseason high school wrestling event. As a returning state champion, Zack has plenty to be proud of and an exciting season ahead. Go Bees!
