Parent Coordinator's Message Parent Coordinator's Message

Dear LaGuardia High School Community,

I am honored and absolutely thrilled to introduce myself as the new Parent Coordinator of LaGuardia High School! As both a NYC public school parent and a long-time parent volunteer, I am deeply committed to supporting families, strengthening communication, and ensuring that every parent and guardian feels connected, informed, and valued.

I have had two children go through the NYC public school system, and one of them proudly graduated from LaGuardia as part of the Class of 2025. I’ve seen firsthand the extraordinary talent, dedication, and spirit that make LaGuardia such a special place. It’s a privilege to serve the community that has given so much to my own family.

Before stepping into this role, I served as the Parent Association President at LaGuardia and dedicated many years to volunteering across various schools. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the needs, challenges, and joys that families encounter as they navigate their children’s educational journeys. I look forward to bringing that insight—and my genuine passion for parent engagement—to this position.

Professionally, my background is in higher education and I hold a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration. My career has centered on supporting students, collaborating with faculty and staff, and removing barriers to success. I am excited to bring this experience to LaGuardia, where I hope to help build even stronger bridges between families, educators, and the broader school community.

I look forward to seeing many familiar faces and meeting our new families. Please know that my door (virtual or in-person!) is always open. I can be reached at tballas@schools.nyc.gov. I am here to support you, answer questions, share information, and help make your experience at LaGuardia as enriching and seamless as possible.

Thank you for welcoming me back into this extraordinary community. I can’t wait to partner with you in the years ahead!

Warmly,

Tracy Ballas

Parent Coordinator

Celebrating Excellence in Music

Our Music Department has given us so much to celebrate this week! Students across multiple ensembles and disciplines have participated in extraordinary opportunities that showcase the caliber of musicianship and dedication at LaGuardia.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Collaboration

Students in String Orchestra and Chamber Music had the extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This world-class mentorship experience enriched their musical education and provided invaluable insights into professional orchestral performance.

Vandoren Saxophone Clinic

Our saxophone students participated in a comprehensive Vandoren Saxophone Clinic featuring multiple highlights:

  • Our saxophone quartet received a full 90-minute coaching session with a Grammy-nominated saxophonist as they prepare for their upcoming Chamber Music Society competition
  • We explored unique approaches required for bass saxophone playing in our West Side Story production, supporting both our theatrical and musical goals
  • Freshman saxophonists had the opportunity to play their lesson materials and receive direct, individualized instruction—an incredibly valuable experience for their development at this crucial stage

Mock Studio Recording at DiMenna Center

Senior Chorus and the Philharmonic Orchestra participated in an exciting mock studio recording of music from the Highlander movie at the DiMenna Center—the main soundstage for movie and TV choral and orchestra recordings. This professional recording experience gave students invaluable insight into the film scoring process and the high standards of studio musicianship.

Brooklyn College Invitational Choral Festival

Students in Cambiata represented LaGuardia beautifully at the Brooklyn College Invitational Choral Festival! Their voices, musicianship, and professionalism made us all proud.

History Has Its Eyes On You!

Students in grades 7–12 in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania are encouraged to create and submit a performance piece (e.g., a rap, poem, song, monologue) highlighting how New York City has shaped history and continues to inspire the world today. Students are encouraged to highlight New York City’s history, culture, and innovation.

Students and teachers can submit student entries here. The submissions form will close once 300 entries have been received or by December 15, 2025, whichever occurs first. A panel of experts familiar with the award will review the entries. Staff from the Gilder Lehrman Institute and New York City Tourism + Conventions will determine the award winner. Entries will be assessed based on this rubric. The student winner will be notified in February through their teacher.

The winner of this Competition will participate in a full-day experience including a performance of HAMILTON in New York City with their teacher, two adult chaperones, and up to 29 classmates.
