WLWV CommunityUpdateMay 26, 2020

No Distance Learning May 29, Last Day of School Now June 4

All West Linn-Wilsonville staff have agreed to take at least two furlough days this year. The two days that will impact instructional time are May 29th and June 5th. The district has applied to participate in the Oregon Work Share Program by reducing eligible employees’ hours and pay by 20%. Additional furlough days this summer will also be taken by various groups of staff. We anticipate about $600,000 in savings through these furlough days.

Last Day of School, June 4th

Events for the last week of school will be adjusted based on a furlough day that week.

  • On June 1st, teachers will post the last lessons and activities for the school year.
  • June 2nd and 3rd are now designated for end-or-year reporting (report cards) work. Teachers will spend time putting progress reports together to be sent home.
  • The last day of school, where students and teachers will connect, is now June 4th.

High schools may make adjustments to the order of these events as they also have Graduation ceremonies during this week. Please watch out for more information from your building principal regarding end-of-year celebrations and plans.

Reopening for the 2020-21 School Year — K12 Online Option

At this time, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District is planning to reopen schools in the fall. We are awaiting guidance from Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and Oregon Department of Education (ODE) regarding the health and safety parameters for reopening. As we learn more and our plans begin to take shape, we will communicate them to you.

This fall, we are also planning to launch an optional WLWV K12 Online Program for students and families who wish to continue learning at home and through a comprehensive, standards-based, online curriculum program taught by our own highly qualified staff. As this optional program develops, we will communicate the details and the registration pathway to you.

THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS! Are You Registered to Volunteer for Next School Year?

It's not too early to make sure you're registered to volunteer in schools next year. Even if you registered to volunteer this year, it's always a good idea to make sure your registration is up to date and you are registered at the school(s) you wish to volunteer at. If you are volunteering at a new school next year, you will need to re-register for that new school. Volunteers need to re-register every three years.

Interested volunteers can register by visiting the district website. Simply click ‘Start’ to fill out your application, which includes a background check. The first time that volunteers sign-in to volunteer at any WLWV school they will be prompted to accept a Volunteer Agreement. Volunteers must also re-register every three years, or when volunteering at a new school.

Volunteering in WLWV schools is an extremely rewarding experience. Your time is greatly appreciated by both staff and students!

Budget Process Timeline

Following the Governor's Stay Home, Save Lines Executive Order 20-21 that was announced on March 23, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District has altered its budget process to adhere to state and federal guidelines around COVID-19 and social distancing. Nursing Notes — Cooking With Children

These are unprecedented times, for sure! Many of us have found ourselves sheltering at home and cooking more than usual. Have you invited your kids into the kitchen? There are many benefits for children and teens when they are able to help in the kitchen. Even the smallest toddler can lend a hand by washing fruits and vegetables or stirring batter. Older children can take on larger tasks of chopping, sautéing, and baking under the observation of an adult. Teens, with a little bit of practice, can complete an entire meal.

Cooking provides children with a learning opportunity that stimulates all of their senses. Not only does cooking help with math and language skills, but it can help build self-confidence and empower children to make healthy choices. Learning to cook influences food choices and behaviors, and has been shown to increase children’s consumption of fruits and vegetables, contributing to their overall well-being. Even a choosy-eater may be more willing to try a new food if they are involved in the cooking process. If tasting a new food is challenging, encourage your child to smell or touch the food, which can serve as a bridge to later tasting that new food.

Read more about the benefits of cooking with children by visiting the Nursing Department Webpage.
