Reading
Students will listen to and read stories and informational texts about getting along and being a good sport. They will discover that playing games is a great way to spend time with friends and to get healthy, too!
What are ideas and how does the author support it?
What is a topic and what is a central idea?
What are point of views?
Writing
Students will learn about Procedural Texts. Students will write a βhow-toβ book. Procedural Texts/How-To books:

clear directions/instructions
sequence is important
often uses order words (first, next, then)
Math for Classes 102, 104, and 105
Students will learn about measurement and comparison. They will learn some accurate measurement techniques using objects, such as inch tiles. Students will discover and discuss how some objects are shorter than, longer than, or equal to other objects.
Math for Classes 101, 103, and 106
This section focuses on developing studentsβ fluency with addition and subtraction within 10. Students need to have fluency with addition and subtraction facts within 10 by the end of grade 1. Students are encouraged to think about addition facts that can help them figure out subtraction facts.
For example, given 9 β 4, students may say βI know that 5 + 4 = 9, so 9 β 4 = 5. Students will also explore the base-ten system and place value as they learn that ten ones are put together to make a new unit, a ten.
Notes from First Grade Teachers π
Read at home!
Make sure your child reads for 20 minutes a day. Ask your child about the stories they read; who are the characters, what is your favorite part, what was the story about?
Students in class 103 should be reading in English and in Spanish!
Check your child's homework folder!
Check your child's homework folder every day for important notices.
Wear sneakers from gym!
Students should be wearing sneakers for gym. If you're not sure, double check with your teacher(s) which day your child has gym.
Try at home
Talk with your child about things you do together at home. Think about the steps you take from beginning, middle, to end.
Have your child practice writing sentences, remembering to capitalize the first word and end the sentence with punctuation.
Count forward and back 1-100.
