New Student Celebration: We are so excited to welcome our newest students to our school community! Last week we celebrated our new students with a pizza party! It has been a joy getting to know them, and we are happy to have them as part of our school family. We look forward to watching them learn, grow, make new friends, and create wonderful memories throughout the school year. Welcome to Franklin! We are so happy you’re here!
Minute Meetings: Minute Meetings are exactly how they sound: I take a minute (or two) to meet one-on-one with EVERY student at Franklin, to connect and get to know them a little better. This helps me determine if students need help with making friends, connecting with their teacher/staff, and answering any other questions that they may have. Minute Meetings will begin in September.
Weekender Bags by Feeding Medina County: Feeding Medina County provides weekly food bags to students/families who may need a little extra support with snacks, canned foods, and other food staples. This program is free of cost. A permission form to participate in this program went home in the red folders with students. If you need another permission form to complete, please let me know and I’ll send one home with your student. There is no limit as to how many students/families can participate, and I can add to our list at any time. Please feel free to reach out by phone or email with any questions.
Backpack Connection: This awesome program is provided by our wonderful PTO members! Backpack Connection has the same concept of Weekender Bags (see above), only these bags consist of easy snacks that are ready to eat. These bags also go home weekly with students. (There is no form for Backpack Connection. Please call or email me if you are interested.)
Question: Can students get both Weekender Bags and Backpack Connection Bags?
Answer: YES! We can definitely provide both bags for students, if there is the need. All you have to do is contact me with your request.
Are you seeing big emotions after school? There’s actually a term for this: Restraint Collapse. Restraint collapse is when a child has “dysregulation of their body, feelings, and emotions in response to having to work really hard to stay regulated all day.” (O’Day, 2025) In other words, children are trying their best to stay put-together all day long at school, and then they finally let it ALL out when they get home. Hunger, fatigue, or feeling overstimulated can contribute to this. Restraint collapse is a typical phenomenon; I have parents/guardians reach out to me frequently to discuss their after-school observations. It does not mean that parents are doing anything wrong; if anything, it’s a sign that parents are doing all of the right things, and that the child feels safe in expressing his/her feelings. Here’s an article that goes more in depth about restraint collapse, and what you can do to help your child (and your sanity!) after school. You will also find an infographic below about after school dysregulation. As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have.
What is Restraint Collapse? Experts Explain After-School Behavior
Is it Rude, Mean, Bullying, or Conflict? Sometimes I hear the dreaded word “bullying” in my office. After asking a few follow-up questions, however, I often find that the situation is actually an example of conflict or rudeness. When I check-in with the other student, nine times out of 10, they had no idea they hurt their friend’s feelings. These moments provide a valuable opportunity to have meaningful conversations and help students practice communicating with one another. Our goal is to teach students how to express their feelings, listen to others, and work through disagreements so that everyone feels safe, respected, and heard. Here is a chart breaking down the differences between conflict, rude, mean, and bullying behaviors.
As always, please know that my door is always open. Thank you for being an important part of our students’ support system!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Neumann

Art Corner
As the leaves begin to change and the crisp autumn air arrives, our art studio is buzzing with seasonal inspiration and creativity!
Studio Focus This Month: Collage & Painting 🎨
This month, we are diving into the colorful worlds of collage and painting! Students are learning how to layer different papers, textures, and materials to build unique compositions. They are also building skills by exploring brush techniques and mixing colors to bring their ideas to life.
Building Art Portfolios 📁
This year, students are starting to build their own art portfolios to track their growth. We are keeping physical portfolios in the classroom that will be brought home at the end of the school year.
Art at Home: September Drawing Challenge ✏️
Art does not have to stop at school! Attached to the bottom of this newsletter, you will find our first Monthly Drawing Challenge. These fun, optional prompts are a great way for your child to keep creating at home.
Talking About Art Everyday 👁️
Art is all around us! You can build your child's creative thinking outside of school by talking about the art, design, and visuals you see in your everyday routine. Try asking:
"Look at the illustration on this book cover/cereal box. Why do you think the artist chose those colors?"
"What do you notice about the shapes and designs on that building/billboard?"
"If you could redesign the packaging of your favorite snack, what would it look like?"
Thank you for supporting your child's creative journey!
Creatively Yours,
Sally A. Lucas
