Training Paraprofessionals Training Paraprofessionals

Welcome to week two of our para training series! Last week, we covered why training paraprofessionals is so important and the four steps involved in training these invaluable team members. We dove into the first step of defining roles within the classroom. This week, we will discuss the second step - creating a team mindset!

Step 2: Team Mindset Step 2: Team Mindset

Step 1: define roles; step 2: team mindset; step 3: planning; Step 4: training ; square around team mindset

A team mindset is all about collaboration, communication, and a strong morale among the team. Everyone has separate roles, but together, they move a classroom forward.

How Can We Build a Team Mindset? How Can We Build a Team Mindset?

We can cultivate a team mindset by...

  • Viewing your paras as educators

  • Building relationships

  • Creating an environment where everyone feels valued and heard

  • Modeling respect for each other

  • Modeling team mindset behavior (collaboration, communication, accountability, adaptability, etc.)

Create a Team Mission Statement

A great activity, suggested by Sasha Long from the Autism Helper, to cultivate a team mindset is creating a team mission statement. When done collaboratively, this mission statement gives your team a purpose and a common goal. As a team, answer the following questions (or think of your own questions that fit your classroom):

  • What do we want for our students?

  • What do we want for our team?

  • What do we want for our school?

Once fine-tuned, print it out and post it where all team members can see it. Below is an example my team created when I was teaching. I put this in our paraprofessional handbook!

Classroom Mission Statement: We strive to create independent students who are valued members of their community. We believe that all of our students have the ability to make progress in the areas of academics, communication, and social skills. Our students deserve to learn in an environment where they feel safe, loved, and accepted for who they are. It is our hope that by the end of middle school our students have functional communication skills, that will allow them to navigate their community and develop meaningful relationships.

If you're interested in creating a team mission statement, there is a video from Sasha Long going through the process and a worksheet to fill out with your team in the Resource section below.

As the season of holidays, celebrations, and gatherings quickly approach, we eagerly anticipate spending it with loved ones. However, for some students with autism, this time of year can be stressful due to unfamiliar surroundings and routines that differ from their daily lives. As teachers we can help our students feel supported and comfortable during this time. Here are some compassionate tips to help you support your students as we enter the celebratory season:

  • Address unspoken questions and concerns with care
  • Prepare students in advance for changes in routine
  • Create a safe space for students to take breaks if needed
  • Use visual aids to explain upcoming events and schedules
  • Work with families to ensure consistent support at home and school
