Student Visioning for a future downtown

Notes from the Principal Notes from the Principal

Dear Cardinal Families, Students, and Staff,

We are hearing that PPS Rightsizing is on many people’s minds right now. I am urging anyone with feedback, questions or concerns to attend the PPS listening session here at Lincoln tomorrow night, Tuesday, October 27th from 6-8. This is the best time to share your thoughts directly. Select Board Directors and our Chief of Schools, Dr. Isaac Cardona, will be here as well as PPS staff leading this work. Both proposals would move Skyline 8th graders to Roosevelt High School and no longer attending Lincoln. Lincoln's only feeder school under both proposals would be West Sylvan. For more information on rightsizing click here.

We want to acknowledge the rich history of our Filipino American families during Filipino American Heritage Month. Filipino Americans are the second-largest Asian American group in the nation. The celebration of Filipino American History Month in October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2009, U.S.

The budget process will be starting earlier this year, in part due to questions arising from the rightsizing process. I’m sharing this information link from last spring’s funding symposium hosted at LHS by Community + Parents for Public Schools. It’s an important history lesson and provides some context to our current funding situation in Oregon. Please stay involved and advocate for public school funding whenever and wherever possible. We need adequate funding, and we need targeted funding to support the historically underserved students in every school. Too often Lincoln’s most vulnerable students are not able to access resources simply because they are here with us at Lincoln and not at a school with local, state or county funded partnerships. Lincoln's historically underserved students have needs and we need to serve as advocates.

Go Cards!

Attendance at Lincoln Attendance at Lincoln

As the days grow shorter we are seeing an increase in the number of students who arrive to school late each morning. Classes begins at 8:30AM. Students should plan on arriving to school between 8-8:20 to ensure they are in class when instruction begins.

Key Details on Oregon Attendance Metrics

  • Regular Attendance Definition: Attending more than 90% of school days in an academic year (missing fewer than 10% of days, which is roughly fewer than 18 days total or about 1.5 days per month).
  • Legal/Administrative Definition: Under Oregon administrative rules (OAR 581-021-0077), regular attendance means an attendance record that does not include more than eight unexcused one-half day absences (or the equivalent) in any four-week period.

  • Chronic Absenteeism (The Opposite Metric): Missing 10% or more of school days for any reason—including excused absences, unexcused absences, and disciplinary suspensions—is classified as chronic absenteeism.

    Athletics Athletics

Every LHS Fall Sport is headed into the Playoffs!

What a season for Athletic Cards, they have set the standard across the PIL this year. Boys Soccer took home the PIL Championship, and our Cross Country leads the pack in 1st place as they head to districts this Wednesday at Lents Park. Girls Soccer and Volleyball kept the momentum going with strong 2nd place PIL finishes, and Friday's Football game against Ida B Wells will decide the Football district title.

Next stop: State! Every single team has qualified for the post season, holding impressive OSAA rankings:

    Boys Soccer #3

    Girls Soccer #5

    XC Bys #1 / Girls #5

    Volleyball #7

    Football #9

We are so proud of every student-athlete who participated this Fall. Keep an eye on Trivory for the playoff schedule and come out and show your support.

    Winter Athletics registration is open!

Basketball, Swimming, and Wrestling are ready to welcome new and returning team mates for winter athletics season. Please note that all student-athletes must be registered on Arbiter.io to participate and tryout.

While Swimming and Wrestling do not require tryouts, Basketball tryouts will take place November 16–18, with the girls' sessions running from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and the boys' sessions following from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

    Excused Absences

A quick reminder regarding early release for athletics: if your student was marked absent on a game day, it may be because they missed class prior to their early release time or there was a delay in updating the roster. If you notice an error in your student's attendance, please reach out directly to the Athletics Office at jviswanathan@pps.net (instead of the main office), and we’ll be happy to help get it updated.

The 2026–2027 O[yes] Media Contest has officially launched! This is a fun opportunity for students to showcase their creative talents with a chance to win up to $500 and a matching donation for their school! We’re asking students to think creatively about the kinds of posters, designs, or videos that would catch the attention of their peers and convince them that taking Oregon OSHA's Heat Illness Prevention Training is a great way to learn how to stay safe and healthy when they’re on the job (whether they already have a job or they’re planning to be working soon, especially during the summer months). The first-place winners in each category will win a matching prize amount for their school or school-sanctioned club or organization. Last year, Cresent Valley High School and Henley High School were the recipients of matching $500 awards. The deadline for submission of all application materials and the final video or graphic design entries is February 12, 2027. Check out the contest rules and downloadable posters at http://youngemployeesafety.org/contest/. Thanks for helping us make Oregon a safer state for our young workers.
