5 Things to Know Weekly Update
July 14, 2025
Dear Colleagues:
We are just about six weeks away from the start of fall semester – so still time to have some vacation this summer before we get to a revised version of Kickoff Day. I was at UCLA last week with 13 other presidents and, among other things, learned that in our California community college system, “no one is in charge and anything can happen.” 😊 While it was said facetiously, it also opens up the possibility that anyone with a good idea to help students succeed can make a difference. Looking forward to implementing our own good ideas in the next academic year.

July is always the time for my favorite conference (that I can never seem to get to anymore): the Curriculum Institute. Luckily, we had some great representatives there this year to learn everything we need to know: Amy Thach, Rachel Zakarias, Charissa McCord, and Venus Versher, as well as others. Thank them when you see them!
This week, Jen K-G and the deans will be in San Diego for the Enrollment Management Academy, a great opportunity for the new deans to work with the seasoned ones to plan for the coming years. While enrollment looks strong for us, there are some external forces that are affecting undocumented and international students and could affect other groups and programs too. We are, as always, planning ways to respond and keep our eye on access and equity.
Given the continued tense political climate, the District is preparing a series of free speech trainings that will give everyone – managers, faculty and frontline classified professionals – some practical guidance about handling difficult situations. The first will be on August 14, so keep an eye out for more information about how to register.
If you you can't make it on August 14 don't worry, there will be more trainings planned in the future. Please try to attend at least one so that we are all prepared to respond appropriately.
In case you missed it: marketing wrote a spotlight feature on one of our high school nursing dual enrollment students, which you can read more about at the GWC Newsroom.
We'd like to continue spotlighting more of our students, so feel free to send suggestions to Andrea Rangno at arangno@cccd.edu.
I’ll be on campus all week, working on some Foundation projects and other things. Stop by and say hi if you have time. 😊
