🎨 Star Staff Member: Mrs. Meghan Van Ness
Mrs. Meghan Van Ness is truly an art teacher extraordinaire! She brings creativity, color, and excitement into our school each day, inspiring students to think outside the box and see the world through a creative lens. Beyond fostering artistic expression, Mrs. Van Ness supports our students’ social-emotional growth by creating a classroom where students can explore, create, take risks, and celebrate their unique ideas.
Her impact reaches far beyond the art room! Mrs. Van Ness goes above and beyond to support student supervision and safety, including helping in our car rider lines. She also coordinates our elaborate and amazing art displays during our Learning Fair, giving our students the opportunity to proudly showcase their talents. Through our Art to Remember fundraiser, she even gives families the opportunity to bring a student masterpiece home as a lasting keepsake.
We are so grateful for Mrs. Van Ness and the color, beauty, creativity, and joy she brings to Mackeben and to the lives of our students. She truly helps make our school a more vibrant and inspiring place to learn!

Home / School Connection 🏡
Helping Children Learn to Keep Their Hands to Themselves
One of the important social skills we are teaching at school is keeping our hands to ourselves. This means using safe hands and safe bodies with classmates, siblings, friends, and adults. Children are still developing self-control and learning how to manage big feelings, so this is a skill that takes practice and consistent reminders.
At home, you can help reinforce this expectation by talking with your child about what they can do instead of hitting, pushing, grabbing, kicking, spitting or touching someone when they are upset. Encourage your child to:
- Use their words to express what they need or how they feel.
- Wait for a turn rather than grabbing or taking something.
- Walk away when a situation is becoming frustrating.
- Ask an adult for help when they are having difficulty solving a problem.
- Take a break to calm their body before responding.
- Respect personal space and remember that everyone has a right to feel safe and comfortable.
A simple phrase to practice at home is “Safe hands, safe body.” When children hear the same language at home and school, it helps make the expectation clear and predictable.
Most importantly, remember that learning self-control takes time. Praise your child when you notice them making a good choice, using their words, walking away, or asking for help. These small moments are opportunities to build the skills children need to handle frustration, solve problems, and develop positive relationships with others.
Our goal is not simply to tell children what NOT to do—it is to teach them what they CAN do instead. Together, we can help our children learn to manage their emotions, respect personal space, and keep themselves and others safe.

Huntley 158 Family Learning Series (virtual)
Topic: School Anxiety, Avoidance & Refusal: Symptoms and Interventions
When: Tuesday, September 29, 2026, 6PM - 7PM
Presenter: Jacqueline Rhew, LCPC
Open to all Huntley 158 families
Join via Google Meet
September is Attendance Awareness Month and Huntley 158’s motto is “Your Presence is Your Power.” Every day a student is in school is an opportunity for them to build relationships, learn and access support.
The district is kicking off its first virtual Family Learning Series this year with a presentation by Jacqueline Rhew, a licensed clinical professional counselor, who specializes in school refusal and anxiety in children. The virtual event is free and open to all Huntley 158 families.
Rhew’s presentation will provide parents and caregivers with practical strategies to support their child who may be struggling with school anxiety, avoidance, and school refusal.
She will explore factors that contribute to school avoidance and help parents learn how to recognize early warning signs and unhelpful coping patterns, and better understand how anxiety and avoidance can reinforce one another.
In addition, Rhew will outline specific interventions to help children manage anxiety, increase motivation, set realistic goals, and gradually re-engage in school. Parents will also learn strategies for responding to anxiety without unintentionally reinforcing avoidance, promoting healthy coping and problem-solving, and using communication that builds self-advocacy, confidence, and independence.

Families are invited to connect, share experiences, and support one another through casual conversations, roundtable discussions, and occasional learning opportunities. Parents of IEP learners of all ages are welcome, and attendance is flexible—come when you can. Please share with other parents that may benefit!
When: Thursday October 1, 2026
Time: 6:30pm-7:30pm

Doors open at 6 p.m., and the movie begins at 6:15 p.m. Come dressed for comfort and bring a blanket for floor seating; an accessible seating area will also be available.
