A Message from the Principals A Message from the Principals

February is starting with some warmer weather which is a lovely break after a frigid January. We know the cold weather will be back, but we will enjoy the warm days while they are here. On that topic, please send your children to school with their cold weather clothing every day! We keep a close eye on the temperatures and if it warms up enough to allow the kids outside, we will take that opportunity. The magic number is -29 celsius. If it is -29 or warmer, we will send the students outside for a short recess (generally not more than around 15 minutes). At -24 or warmer we will send them out for full recesses.

February is also I Love to Read month and we have lots of fun activities planned. Keep a close eye out for our Forest of Reading activities and other fun events and challenges to encourage reading. Reading is one of the greatest indicators of lifelong success. Our students spend time throughout the school day learning how to read and improve as readers through such things as phonics instruction, fluency practice and comprehension exercises. As parents one of the greatest gifts you can provide your child is the gift of reading. That can be accomplished by finding books your children really enjoy and reading out loud to them.

February is also Valentines Day and we have our annual winter fun day. Lots to look forward to in February!

February is I Love to Read month. This year, Woodlawn School is excited to be participating in the Forest of Reading, a Canada-wide recreational reading program. We will be reading a selection of books written by Canadian authors, discussing the books and their themes, completing some activities to go along with them, and voting on our favourite stories. You can find lots of information about the program on the website at https://forestofreading.com/

As well, we will be hosting a variety of guest readers in classes throughout the month, including some Pistons hockey players, HSD staff, Corny Rempel, and other community members. If you would like to be a guest reader for your child's class, please reach out to your child's teacher to discuss a date and time that works.

February 26th have your child wear a splash of pink to help raise awareness and spread kindness to others!

Pink Shirt Day: Growing Kind Brains and Brave Hearts

Pink Shirt Day will be recognized on Wednesday, February 26. On this day, students are encouraged to wear a pink shirt to show support for kindness, inclusion, and standing up for others.

Pink Shirt Day reminds us that kindness is a skill children learn as their brains grow. When children can recognize their Zone and understand their feelings, they are better able to show empathy and make caring choices.

At school, students are learning to notice their Zones and practice standing up for themselves and others. At home, talking about Zones and emotions during everyday moments helps strengthen this learning.

Helping children feel regulated, connected, and supported is an important part of creating a caring school community.

When Your Child Is Sick When Your Child Is Sick

If your child is sick and will not be attending school, please let us know before 8:40 am. You can either use our parent portal, email Woodlawn@hsd.ca, or call the school at 204-326-6110. Your help in letting us know your child will be absent is greatly appreciated!

Additionally, please read over the following information about sending your child to school after an illness. It is important that you do not send your children to school if they are sick. Some general guidelines we encourage are:

  • Please keep your child home if they have a fever. They should be fever-free (without medication) for 24 hours before sending them back to school
  • If they have thrown up in the last 24 hours, please keep them home
  • If they are on antibiotics, they need to be home for at least 24 hours in order to no longer be contagious

These guidelines help prevent the spread of sickness as well as ensure that your child is able to participate in school while they are here.

Finally, we know that there are some coughs and colds that are lingering for long-term. If you feel that your child has met the above-listed guidelines and can come to school without their cough/cold affecting their learning and those around them, they can return to school. However, please remember that we do not have indoor recess supervision, and students will be expected to go outside for recess. Exceptions to this can only be made with prior approval from a principal and would be in extreme cases such as a serious, chronic health condition or similar.

Medication Medication

Please note that OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATION is not to be sent to school in your child's backpack or lunch kits. All over-the-counter medication needs to be administered by a parent/guardian. Our school staff cannot administer over-the-counter medication.

In order for PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION to be administered by staff, parents need to bring the ORIGINAL container/box with the label on. There are forms at the office for parents/guardians to fill out. It is preferred that as much as possible prescription medication be taken at home. Only in cases where the medication must be taken during the school hours will we administer it here.

Are you looking for a more convenient way to let the school know about your child's attendance? You can enter your child's appointments and absences on the Parent Portal.

Students arriving after 8:55am or returning from an appointment during the school day are to report to the office for an entry slip before heading to their classroom.

Thank you to everyone for cooperating in reporting to the office when picking your child up from school during the school day.

Is your volunteer status up to date? Is your volunteer status up to date?

We appreciate all of our volunteers that help out in our school throughout the year. With field trips soon starting up, it is always a good idea to check your parent portal account to see if your paperwork is current. This will help prevent missing out on a field trip opportunity because of paperwork not being complete. If you have any questions, please email the office at woodlawn@hsd.ca.

Bus Information Bus Information

User uploaded image

All school busses that are running late or cancelled will be posted on the Hanover School Division website at www.hsd.ca
Under the Departments tab you will find Transportation, Bus Delay Bulletins, and a list of affected busses.

The transportation department will no longer be calling individual homes when busses are delayed. When a bus route is cancelled due to weather or road conditions it may be cancelled for the a.m. and p.m. runs. If you drive your students to school, you will need to confirm whether or not your bus is operating in the afternoon. Please call transportation at 204-320-2347.

Parents will be expected to obtain information, if needed, on the status of their bus through the website. Busses that are running more than 10 minutes late on a given day will have the bus number and estimated lateness posted on the page. Homes that do not have computer access to the web should make arrangements with another family on the route whom they could contact.
