An early prayer for Father's Day
Gracious God,
Bless fathers and all father figures with
such love and faithfulness that children
flourish and grow in uprightness and joy.
Bless those who long to be fathers and
those whom this day is difficult.
Amen
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents & Caregivers
WHAT DID THE EMMAUS STAFF LEARN THROUGHOUT BOOK WEEK
During Book Week staff were rostered to go from class to class and read a favourite book or passage from a book. The students loved this activity as did the staff.
Throughout this activity we also asked the students questions from the book or story to check their understanding. In most cases the response was very good. However, a concerning fact that came to all of our attention was the response from the students as to who reads at home or who has mum/dad, or another adult read to them.
Because of this I would like to remind all our parents and care givers of the importance of reading.
The Gift of Reading: Why Making Time Matters
In the busyness of family life, there are always things competing for our attention. Work, school, activities, appointments, dinner, homework, housework—and the endless list of things that somehow need to be done.
But amongst all that busyness, there is one simple thing that is incredibly powerful: reading to your child.
Reading together is so much more than finishing a book. It is an opportunity to build language, imagination, confidence, knowledge and connection. When children hear us read, they are exposed to new words, ideas, sentence structures and ways of understanding the world. They begin to develop the skills they need to become confident readers themselves.
But perhaps just as importantly, reading creates connection. When you sit beside your child with a book, you are saying, “You are important. I have time for you. I want to share this moment with you.” And children remember those moments.
But we're so time poor…We understand. Life is busy. You may not always have 30 minutes to sit down and read. You may arrive home exhausted, have multiple children needing your attention, or simply feel like there aren't enough hours in the day. That's okay. Reading doesn't have to be long to be meaningful.
Ten minutes of reading together is better than no reading at all. One story before bed. A few pages after dinner. Reading while having breakfast. Sharing a book on the weekend. Taking turns reading a page. The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is making reading part of your family's life.
Even on the busiest days, try to find a small pocket of time. Put the phone down. Turn off the television. Sit close. Read a story. Talk about the pictures. Ask your child what they think might happen next. Laugh together. Let them choose the book—even if it is the same one you've read a hundred times!
These seemingly ordinary moments are building something extraordinary.
We don't get this time back. Our children grow incredibly quickly. There will come a time when they no longer ask us to read to them. There will be books they outgrow, bedtime routines that change and little voices that no longer say, “Can you read me one more story?” We cannot press pause on childhood. So, amongst the rush of everyday life, make time for the story. The dishes can wait. The emails can wait. The laundry will still be there tomorrow. But this moment with your child won't come around again. Reading together gives us the chance to slow down, even for a few minutes, and be fully present with our children. It helps them grow as readers—but it also helps them grow as people.
So tonight, or over the weekend, if you can, choose a book, sit together and read. Ten minutes. One story. One cuddle. One precious moment. It may feel like a small thing today. But those small moments can become some of the biggest memories of childhood. With appreciation for the important role, you play in your child's learning and growth.
Please read our Assistant Principal’s section in this newsletter below, to reinforce with research what I have mentioned above.

THE POWER OF READING TOGETHER
As part of our recent Book Week activities at Emmaus, students were asked about their reading habits at home. The responses gave us an important reason to reflect. The majority of students indicated that they read books or stories fewer than three times each week, while many of our younger students shared that their parents do not regularly read to them at all. While we recognise how busy family life can be, these responses provide a timely reminder of just how important regular reading at home remains.
Interestingly, this reflects a broader trend highlighted in a recent 6PR report, which discusses research suggesting that the number of parents reading aloud to their children has reached an all-time low. University of Tasmania Professor of Literacy and Education Robyn Cox acknowledges the very real pressures facing families today, including busy working lives, financial pressures and the demands placed on parents.
Reading together, however, is one of the simplest and most valuable ways families can support a child’s learning. Regular reading builds vocabulary, comprehension and fluency, develops imagination and general knowledge, and helps children develop positive attitudes towards books and reading. The conversations that happen around a story are equally valuable, providing opportunities for children to predict, question, explain and make connections.
Importantly, reading aloud shouldn’t stop once children can read independently. Hearing an adult read exposes children to vocabulary, expression and texts that may be beyond what they can yet comfortably read themselves. Older children also benefit from sharing novels, discussing books or simply seeing the adults around them reading for enjoyment.
Finding time doesn’t need to be complicated. Try making 10–15 minutes of reading part of the daily routine—perhaps before bed. Let your child choose something they are genuinely interested in, take turns reading, talk about the characters and pictures, predict what might happen next, or ask them about their favourite part. For older children, ask about what they are currently reading or consider sharing a novel together.
Above all, try to make reading an enjoyable family experience rather than another homework task. Even a short amount of shared reading each day can send a powerful message: books matter, reading is enjoyable, and reading is something we value beyond the classroom.
THE MIDVALE HUB
The Midvale Hub is a community support hub that helps children, families, and community members access a range of services in one welcoming place. They offer support with education, parenting, wellbeing, counselling, family assistance, food relief, community programs, and connections to local services. The Hub works closely with schools and organisations to help families feel supported, connected, and empowered within their community.
Emmaus is very happy to be forming a closer partnership with the Hub and we look forward to working together on some upcoming parent workshops and opportunities that will support our families and wider school community. Please click the link below for further information on parent workshops.

CELEBRATING BOOK WEEK
A SYMPHONY OF STORIES!
What a wonderful week we had celebrating Book Week and our love of stories! Our students and staff embraced the theme “A Symphony of Stories” through a range of exciting experiences.
We enjoyed our Book Parade, where the students proudly dressed up as their favourite book characters and shared in the excitement with the school community. We were also entertained by a fantastic Perform Education incursion, which brought stories to life through music, drama and imagination.
DECORATE A DOOR COMPETITION
The competitive spirit was certainly alive at Emmaus during our Book Week “Decorate a Door” Competition! 🎨🚪 Students and teachers showed incredible creativity (and just a little friendly rivalry!) as they transformed their classroom doors to reflect this year’s theme, “Symphony of Stories.”
A huge congratulations to Year 4, who impressed the judges and took out first prize, with Year 1 Blue close behind in second place!

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST MUSICAL - YEAR 5 & 6
On Friday 21 August, our Year 5 and 6 students were lucky enough to travel to the Regal Theatre to watch Mercedes College’s wonderful production of Beauty and the Beast. The students were amazed by the incredible talent on stage, from the singing and dancing to the impressive costumes and sets. They thoroughly enjoyed being swept away into the magical world of the story and were excited to cheer on the talented performers. It was a fantastic experience and a wonderful opportunity for our students to enjoy live theatre!
IN MOTION GYMNASTICS
Our Kindy, Pre-Primary and Year One students had a fantastic time during their In Motion Gymnastics incursion. The children enjoyed jumping, balancing, rolling and climbing while developing their coordination, confidence and movement skills.
It was wonderful to see everyone having a go, trying new skills and having fun with their friends!
🎶 ONE BIG VOICE - A NIGHT TO REMEMBER 🎶
On Friday evening, our Emmaus Senior Choir proudly took to the stage at Perth Arena as part of the spectacular One Big Voice event. Surrounded by hundreds of young voices singing together, our students helped create a truly memorable performance. The incredible vocal talent, energy and joy showcased throughout the evening made it a genuine goose-bump experience for everyone in the crowd!
A very special thank you to Mrs Plint, whose weeks and weeks of rehearsals, preparation and encouragement ensured our choir was ready to shine. We are incredibly proud of our Senior Choir members, who rehearsed tirelessly and represented Emmaus with enthusiasm and pride on the night.
Thank you also to the many parents and families who came along to support our performers and share in this special experience, and to Mr Caddy for providing additional assistance throughout the preparation and event.
Congratulations to everyone involved – what a wonderful celebration of music, teamwork and the amazing gifts of our Emmaus students!

UNIFORM REMINDER
We ask families to please ensure students are wearing the correct Emmaus school uniform each day. Wearing our uniform correctly promotes a sense of pride, belonging and unity within our school community.
A few important reminders:
- Ties are compulsory for all students in Years 1–6 when wearing the formal uniform.
- Uniform shorts and trousers must be the approved Emmaus Uniform Shop items, including the Emmaus embroidery. Similar items purchased from retailers such as Kmart or BIG W are not part of our school uniform.
- Sports shoes must be white or predominantly white running shoes. Black or brightly coloured shoes are not part of the approved sports uniform.
- Only black lace up shoes or strap shoes are part of the formal uniform (not running shoes).
Thank you to our families for supporting these expectations and helping our students wear their Emmaus uniform with pride.

WELLBEING IN KINDY - ASKING FOR PERMISSION
This term, our Kindy students read Ask First, Monkey! to help introduce the important concept of consent and permission in an age-appropriate way. We explored how asking for permission means checking that something is okay before we do it.
The children learned that asking someone for consent also means waiting for their answer, listening for a clear “yes” or “no”, and respecting their choice. Through discussion, we are helping our children understand that their bodies and personal space belong to them, and they should respect the boundaries of others too.
WELLBEING IN YEAR 3 - WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER!
This term in Year 3, we have been exploring what makes a welcoming, inclusive and positive friendship group. We have been learning that everyone is unique and brings their own strengths, talents, ideas, personality and sense of fun to a friendship. When we make room for others, our friendships can become stronger, happier and more firmly in the Green Zone.
Our focus has been: “We are better together!”
To explore this idea, students were first challenged to independently design their own Dream Treehouse. They were encouraged to think creatively about all the things they would love to have in their perfect treehouse. We then shared our designs and discovered that everyone had different and wonderful ideas.
We took this one step further by imagining what would happen if we combined everyone’s best ideas into one giant treehouse. This helped us make a connection between building a treehouse and building a friendship group. Just like a treehouse becomes more interesting when it includes different features, friendship groups are enriched when they include people with different strengths, talents, personalities and ideas.
Our Year 3 students are developing an understanding that friendship isn't about having to be the same or always choosing the same people. It is about being welcoming, including others, appreciating what each person brings and making sure everyone has a place to belong.
