School Newsletter Term 2, Week 5
Friday 22nd May 2026
Kia ora whānau,
From 2026, all schools across Aotearoa New Zealand, including us here at West End School, are adopting a new approach to teaching, assessing, and reporting on your child’s learning in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics & Statistics.
Our goal remains the same: providing a clear, honest, and consistent picture of your child’s journey. However, because the Ministry of Education has introduced a brand-new "measuring stick," how your child’s achievement looks on paper will feel different this year.
Understanding "Progress Descriptors"
In 2026, we are moving to five specific Progress Descriptors. These show where your child sits in relation to the expected "Progress Markers" for their specific year level:
Emerging: Starting to grasp the new concepts for this year's level.
Developing: Building confidence and applying skills with some support.
Consolidating: Successfully using skills and knowledge most of the time.
Proficient: Meeting the high expectations set for the end of their year level.
Exceeding: Working consistently beyond the expectations for their year level.
Why the Results Might Look Different
When you receive your child's report, you might notice their "rating" appears lower than in previous years. Please do not be alarmed. Your child has not lost knowledge or gone backward. This shift happens for two main reasons:
A Higher Bar: The new 2026 curriculum has redefined "at expectation." The criteria for each year level are now more specific and, in many cases, more rigorous than before.
A New Scale: Think of it like switching from measuring in inches to measuring in centimeters. The number on the ruler changes, but the child hasn't shrunk!
Your child is still growing and learning every day. We are simply using a more precise and challenging scale to track that growth.
These changes are about transparency and partnership. By being more specific about what a child needs to master at each stage, we can identify gaps earlier and celebrate "Proficiency" with genuine confidence.
We value our connection with you. If you have any questions about your child’s individual report or these new descriptors, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher. We are excited about the clarity these changes bring to our shared mission: helping every West End student shine.
Property Journey Update
It is an exciting time at West End School as we continue our "Property Journey," focused on creating a safer, more functional, and inspiring environment for our tamariki. We have several significant projects nearing completion and others just beginning to take shape. Here is the latest on how we are transforming our school grounds.
The Pihipihinga Block Transformation
We are thrilled to announce that we are in the final stages of planning a comprehensive upgrade to the Pihipihinga Block. This project was designed with our students' daily needs at the forefront, focusing on modernising the internal flow and functionality of our learning spaces.
Key features of this upgrade include:
User-Friendly Breakout Spaces: We have redesigned these areas to offer more flexibility for small group work and quiet reflection, allowing for a more versatile teaching approach.
Fresh Interiors: New, durable floor coverings will be installed alongside modern furniture that provide much-needed workspace for hands-on learning.
Upgraded Cloak Bays: To help keep our learning environments organized and tidy, we’ve streamlined the cloak bay areas for better accessibility and storage.
We can’t wait to see our students thriving in these refreshed spaces very soon.
Security and Safety: The Major Fencing Upgrade
Starting shortly, West End School will begin a major fencing upgrade. This project is essential for ensuring the continued safety of our students and bringing our perimeter up to current Ministry of Education safety standards.
As part of this process, we must adhere to specific guidelines regarding "clear zones" around school boundaries. Consequently, all trees within a set distance from the fence line must be removed. While we value our green spaces, this is a necessary step to meet safety requirements and improve the overall security of our school site.
Sustainability and Community Spirit
In true West End School fashion, we are ensuring that nothing goes to waste. The wood from the removed trees will be put to excellent use across our school and community:
Orchard Development: Timber will be recycled into our orchard strip to support our gardening initiatives.
Fundraising: Seasoned wood will be sold as firewood, with all proceeds going back into school resources.
Hangi: We are setting aside a portion of the wood to fuel future school Hangi, keeping our cultural traditions burning bright.
Enviro Area: This will be remodeled with higher garden beds, a teaching table in the middle and easier access to the area. This will make it a teaching focussed area.
More Room to Grow
Beyond safety, these changes offer a fantastic silver lining for our physical layout. The change in fencing layout will allow us to increase our staff car parking capacity, easing congestion during drop-off and pick-up times. More importantly, it will also open up the school frontage, creating a larger, sunnier space for our students to eat their lunch and enjoy their play breaks.
We thank our community for their ongoing support as we navigate these improvements. Our property journey is about more than just buildings and fences—it’s about building a better future for every student at West End School.
The STAR and attendance management plans
Subject to regulations being passed, all state and state-integrated schools in New Zealand will be required to implement an attendance management plan. This must have regard to the STAR framework and be in place by the start of Term 1 2026.
In an attendance management plan, a student reaching a certain number of absences will trigger an appropriate school response. The STAR framework supports schools to develop these plans. It outlines escalating actions to address non-attendance. This may include:
tailored support for the student and their families
collaboration with external agencies
in some cases, legal action, such as prosecution of parents, if appropriate support has been offered but not taken up.
We will not prosecute parents of students who are absent because of chronic illness or health conditions associated with a disability, or who are genuinely engaging with a school and the support offered.

We are happy to announce we will be doing another whole school production this year. The whole school will be performing at the Regent in Week 5 of Term 4, so we are well into the organisational side of getting the show ready. We have 50 speaking parts and will be allocating roles in the next 4 weeks.
7 of these roles will be main speaking parts and audition forms will be going home to Year 5 and 6 students next week who wish to try out for these roles. Supporting characters will be organised within classes in the coming weeks, and information will be sent home throughout the process.
If you wish to help out with costumes or props, classroom teachers will be reaching out in Term 3 - or feel free to contact them if you wish to help. If you have any questions, please email Dan Minchin dminchin@westend.school.nz and he'll be happy to help.

Te Whare Hongonga
A group of students from Te Whare Hononga had an exciting trip to Lollipops Playland, where students enjoyed exploring, challenging themselves, and trying new activities. Throughout the visit, the students demonstrated the school value of whakamana by testing their abilities and stepping outside their comfort zones.
They also showed Mana Aotūroa as they explored the environment with confidence and curiosity. It was a trip filled with fun, laughter, and learning for everyone involved!

Tipuranga Mahi
Grandparents Afternoon
Last Tuesday, Tipuranga and Rūma Whitu invited their grandparents to join them for a celebration of manaakitanga; a school value we have been learning more about this term.
We began by performing a mini concert with some of our favourite waiata, and then were very excited to show our grandparents around our classrooms. It was great to be able to share some of the activities we love doing every day in class with our whānau.
Thanks for coming grandparents, and making the afternoon so special!.
Room 16
This term, Room 16 has been focusing on learning more about our school value manaakitanga. We watched a video about random acts of kindness and have had lots of discussions about being kindness heroes at school and at home.
It turns out that not all superheroes need capes, especially kindness heroes! We used whakamana in writing to share ways in which we are kind, and mana aotūroa to create kindness heroes of ourselves.
Puāwaitanga Mahi
Tuesday and Thursday were beautiful days to spend time in Te Marae O Hine (The Square). It was sunny and warm, and our classes enjoyed getting out of the classroom to consolidate their learning around the history of this site.
With workbooks in hand we set off in our groups with a parent and roamed from one important feature to the next, looking for clues to fill in our workbooks.
We learned about the pou on and around the Palmerston North Council buildings and how they related to the stories we had read about Te Rongorito and Rangitāne. We saw where the old train station was situated, and we could track where the clock had once sat on top of the old post office building, now in the clock tower. We had a good look at the cenotaph, tracing the story of war through the pictures that surround it, and finding the names of the fallen in the wars in which New Zealanders have fought. One of our favourite places was the rock sculptures. These were sculpted by different artists in the Pacific Rim. We had a good look at the archway and saw how the huia bird was represented in the five feathers of the iwi of this area. There was so much to look at. We are looking forward to sharing our learning with our family next time we walk through.
After a quick bite to eat, we headed for Te Manawa. We had already looked at the big stained glass mural in the foyer and had an educator tell us all about what it meant. Now we headed upstairs to engage in a workshop about the adventures of Haunui a Nanaia. He was a tohunga, a Māori man with special powers. We followed his story as he searched for his wife down the west coast, naming all of our rivers as he went. We had already learned about his story through a book our teacher read to us called, Hau's Revenge, so it was great for us to use our knowledge whilst we played the game of his travels with the educator.

Room 3
Plant to Plate
Room 3 had the opportunity to learn how to plant vegetables, care for the school garden and cook using fresh ingredients.
Plant to Plate was an awesome experience that involved communication skills and maths. We learnt how to follow a recipe, measure ingredients and cook in small groups.
