Coming Up! The Anxious Generation Discussion
Please join the Brunswick High School Community on Tuesday, March 11th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm in the High School Library for a discussion of Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation. We will talk about the book's themes, current research, and about creating a healthy learning environment for our students.
All Brunswick Community members are welcome. There is no requirement that you have read the book. Please contact Hugh Dwyer (hdwyer@brunswicksd.org) with any questions. Thanks and we look forward to seeing you!
If you are joining us, please park in the front parking lot and enter through the front doors. The library is straight ahead (around the stairway). Someone will be there to greet you.
Early Release Wednesdays: Investing in Our Staff
Our monthly Early Release Wednesdays provide valuable time for staff to engage in meaningful professional development, enhancing their skills and collaboration. During this past session, staff led and participated in a variety of enriching mini-courses, including strategies for differentiated instruction, integrating technology in the classroom, and fostering student engagement. These sessions not only strengthen our teaching practices but also create a dynamic learning community among educators. By dedicating time to professional growth, we ensure that our students benefit from innovative and effective instruction every day!
Below is a listing of some of the mini-courses that were offered.

Retirement Recognition - Carla Selberg
Family & Consumer Science Teacher at Brunswick High School
What do you do for Brunswick School Department? (Position/School/Department)
I teach Family and Consumer Science at Brunswick High School which currently include four different semester electives: Food Science, International Cuisine, Parenting/Child Development, and Fiber Arts. I have also taught Housing and Life Management. I have been the faculty advisor for the Baking Club for the last 4 years -organizing cooking competitions and experiences. I was the Costume Designer for BHS players for 14 years and also worked as the BHS Players Production Assistant for 10 of those years.
How long have you been with BSD?
I have been a teacher at BHS for 18 years. When my children were in Brunswick's Longfellow Elementary School, I was a substitute teacher for about 4 years. I also taught at Brunswick’s “Growstown One Room Schoolhouse” for several seasons as “Miss Frost”, and taught “Quilting-in-the-Classroom” as the “Artist in Residence” for the elementary schools in Brunswick which was sponsored by “Arts are Elementary”. All total, I have been teaching in some capacity in the Brunswick School System for 22 years.
What do you enjoy most about working at BSD?
Working at Brunswick High School and getting to teach the subjects that I love has been my "dream" job. I love to see the students change, grow, become confident and successful! I teach grades 9-12 so I get to meet a lot of students when they arrive as Freshman and am so proud to see all they have accomplished by the time they graduate. BHS has a culture that promotes excellence, personal growth, and school spirit! I love the school, the staff, the students, and the wide variety of curriculum offerings. I have found a great deal of personal joy and lifelong friendships while working at BHS!
What do you plan to do on your first day of retirement?
Sleep in, go out for lunch and play in my sewing room!
What do you look forward to the most in your retirement years?
The gift of “time”. Time for fun activities with my family and friends. Time to create more quilts as illustrations for children’s books. Time for long walks, sewing marathons, playing with my granddaughter, and traveling with my husband!
Tell us about one of your most memorable moments while working in Brunswick.
I have so many wonderful memories that it is hard to choose just one!
One year, during an open house a former student came to visit me. He shared that he graduated from a culinary arts school and was now a head chef in a restaurant. He came to thank me for inspiring him and giving him the confidence to pursue this career. I had no idea that I was planting a seed in this quiet freshman that would change the trajectory of his life. That is the reason that I love to be a teacher - I made a positive difference in the life of a student.
