The Peirce Weekly - June 4, 2024
If you are not seeing a Table of Contents on the left or accessibility button across the top of this email, click "View in Browser" to see all features.
It's hard to believe, but this is the second to last Peirce Weekly issue of the school year! While PTO meetings have wrapped up, we are still looking for volunteers for next year.
- School Supplies - The Peirce PTO funds school supplies for all Peirce students. We still need a few volunteers to sort supplies and deliver them to the classrooms. Interested? Email Kelly Kemp at kkemp@peircepto.org
- Picture Day Coordinator - Assist current picture day coordinator in planning this year's picture day, with intention to take on the role next year. Duties include working with photography company and school administration to plan and organize picture day and retake day. Interested? Email Sarah Barton at camslamm@gmail.com.
It is also time to start thinking about next year's event calendar. Below are a few events we have done in the past that need new volunteers if we would like to continue them. Do you have other ideas you are more excited about? We would love to hear about them! PTO community events are only as strong as our volunteers and their enthusiasm!
- Welcome Back to School Picnic - This is the first community event of our school year. In the past it has been held sometime during the first two or three weeks of school, either at Peirce or at the Reservoir Beach. Details for Fall 2024 will be up to whoever decides to coordinate the event!
- Fall Festival - The Fall Festival is usually held in October. Past events have included arts & crafts, fall themed activities and games, cider donuts and popcorn. If we would like this event to continue we need a committee to take over.
Interested? Email peirceschool.pto@gmail.com
Thanks so much to everyone who has stepped up to volunteer this year!
Support the Arlington EATS Summer Lunch Program
Summer is right around the corner! We are starting to collect items we will need for our vacation lunch program along with other food items as well. June Spotlight items include:
- Gluten free items (snacks, mixes, pastas, etc.)
- Cereal (Cheerios and Chex are popular)
- Rice Crispy treats (individual serving sizes)
- Animal Crackers (individual serving sizes)
- Dish soap
School vacations often mean less food for families. By offering meals when school is not in session, we strive to decrease food insecurity for families who rely on school meals. Food support is available when school is not in session over the February and April vacation weeks and six weeks in the summer for Arlington students and their families. For more information call 339-707-6757.

Join the Friends of Arlington METCO
Greetings, Peirce families! Peirce is one of the lucky schools in town that has students from Boston who come to Arlington each day as part of the METCO program. A group of residents has formed the Friends of Arlington METCO and we'd love to find new members who would like to help. See below:
Arlington METCO supports more than 70 Boston students attending Arlington schools as a means of voluntary school integration. We have exciting things planned ahead: Field Day, a Bridging Communities dinner, and welcoming new students and families to Arlington and your school. We’d love your occasional help. Join us!
Complete our quick survey by June 19 to tell us how you’d like to be involved!

Arlington Public Schools News
Wait Until 8th Discussion - Thursday, June 6 - 7:30 PM
Dear Peirce Families,
We can't believe our 5th graders are finishing up their time at Peirce!
As we prepare for what's next, families at our school - and across town - are starting to take the Wait Until 8th Pledge in an effort to delay smartphone adoption for our rising 6th graders.
Given current research on the negative impact of smartphones + social media use on learning and social/emotional functioning, many are hoping to effect change.
In particular as children will transition to Middle School, further away from home and with new routines, the topic of communication devices is rightfully top of mind for many of us.
We are asking you to consider pledging with us and other families.
Sharing here some interesting resources:
Details about what it means to sign the Wait Until 8th Pledge:
The Pledge: https://www.waituntil8th.org/take-the-pledge
Resource on Tech Alternatives to meet parenting needs: https://www.waituntil8th.org/devices
10 families will make this an official pledge in the Peirce community. Make sure you select Peirce Elementary School in Arlington.
Event on June 6th (this Thursday) at 7.30pm at the Robbins Library Community Room: a Bishop parent organized a meet & greet with Dr Allison Baker, to discuss her expertise and experience leading a Wait until 8th grassroots movement in her area (Dr Allison Baker, Wellesley mom and child psychiatrist in Boston Globe article: Let' s talk kids and smartphones)
If interested, you can join this local private Facebook group Arlington MA Parents - Smartphone Sense which gathers Arlington parents/caregivers, and offers a platform for exchanges and sharing effective strategies and support.
You are welcome to add your details in this sheet created here for further communication and joint efforts with other Arlington families (especially useful if not on Facebook).
Thank you for considering this pledge and please, feel free to spread the word!
