Your Monthly Michigan Farm Link Update Your Monthly Michigan Farm Link Update

January

As we step into January, we are filled with excitement and optimism for the year ahead. The new year brings a full calendar of upcoming events that will allow us to connect more deeply with farmers, landowners, and partners across the state. We are eager to be back in communities, listening, learning, and building the kind of relationships that have always been the backbone of successful farmland transitions.

At the same time, we are looking forward to continuing the expansion of the MIFarmLink program and reaching new regions across Michigan. Joining the MACD team has been an important milestone, opening the door to stronger collaboration and a broader statewide presence. With trusted partnerships, shared values, and a commitment to steady, thoughtful growth, we are ready to build on what works and carry this program forward into the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Jill and the MIFarmLink Team

(Team MIFarmLink, #mifarmlinker)

Seeking Regional Reps!

Do you know someone passionate about helping Michigan’s farmers and farmland thrive? MIFarmLink is currently seeking Regional Representatives to help spread the word about our program statewide! Regional Reps serve as local connectors—sharing MIFarmLink resources, building relationships with farmers and landowners, and helping communities understand how farmland transition can benefit everyone. It’s a great opportunity for Conservation District staff or community members who care deeply about keeping land in agriculture and supporting the next generation of farmers. We are specifically looking for folks in Regions 1, 4, 5, 9. Please see the map. Apply here.

Farm in Grass Lake, MI

A unique, rent-free farming opportunity is available on 39 acres in Grass Lake, Michigan. With approximately 7 acres of open field suitable for hay or pasture and the remainder in marsh and wooded wetlands, this property is ideal for a conservation-minded farmer or land steward. The landowner is seeking a working arrangement with a future partner who can help manage the open fields to improve wildlife habitat while preserving the natural landscape, offering a thoughtful opportunity to farm while caring for the land.

Meet the Sconyers Family

The Sconyers family is searching for a place to put down roots and grow a working farm and homestead for their family of five. They are seeking 10 to 20 acres with a home and existing farm infrastructure, ideally with space for livestock, gardens, and fruit trees, and are open to a lease-to-buy or sale with mentorship. With a strong commitment to organic practices, pasture-raised animals, and raising their children on the land, they are hopeful to find a Michigan farm where they can build a long-term future and become part of a farming legacy.

Building Connections at MACD 2025

MIFarmLink was excited to attend the MACD 2025 Annual Conference December 8–10 at Shanty Creek Resort. On December 9, we had the opportunity to give a presentation highlighting our work connecting farmers and landowners across Michigan. It was wonderful to connect with Conservation Districts and other partners, share ideas, and strengthen the network supporting Michigan’s agricultural and conservation communities.

A great resource for those just getting started in agriculture! MSU Extension and USDA have released the Beginning Farmer Resource & Decision-Making Guide — a tool packed with information on everything from soil health and livestock to equipment, business setup, land access, and more.

We’re proud to share that MIFarmLink contributed to the Land Access section (pages 427–452), helping ensure new farmers have support as they search for a place to grow.

It’s free to view and download — a handy read for anyone dreaming of their first farm or stepping into management.
