SDSO Concert Preview Discussion
You are invited to join students at Lincoln High School for a special presentation from guests of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra.
We will hear from Derek Bermel plus Emanuel Black Bear and his son Ari, from the Creekside Singers. They will discuss their collaboration and make some music together. In addition, we will explore how Dvořák, in the 1890s, drew inspiration from Native America, with a performance from LHS student soloists.
SDSO Maestro Delta David Gier and cultural historian Joseph Horowitz will lead the conversation with students and guests. Please RSVP to this event by registering at the following link: https://sfsdcomed.myrec.com/info/activities/program_details.aspx?ProgramID=30224#0_145465
"The music is what brings us together in all cultures. We all have a form of music. Being able to share that together, no matter what it is, we see how we are similar to each other. If we base our relationships on similarities rather than differences, we can get along better."
- Emmanuel Black Bear, Creekside Singers Drum Keeper
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This presentation is a preview of the concert, on Saturday November 21. The South Dakota Symphony orchestra will present “From the New World”, a multi-media exploration of Native American inspirations, including Dvořák's celebrated New World Symphony. The music is accompanied with stunning visuals by Peter Bogdanoff, and Louis Ballard's Incident at Wounded Knee, exploring the relationship of this music to Longfellow's "The Song of Hiawatha". Experience the Creekside Singers drumming group with full orchestra performing Lakota Refrains, a new orchestral work by Derek Bermel and Emmanuel Black Bear from the 2025 Lakota Music Project Tour. An outgrowth of the orchestra's 20-year-old Lakota Music Project, which has initiated collaborative music-making by Lakota, Dakota, and SDSO musicians.
Tickets for the Saturday performance are available through SDSO website: https://www.sdsymphony.org/concerts-tickets/all-concerts/from-the-new-world/

and
Wednesday, October 7th, 2026
at Memorial Middle School Auditorium (1401 S Sertoma Ave) from 6-7pm
More about the task force:
The Sioux Falls School District's Facility Planning Task Force brings together community members, educators, and district leaders to thoughtfully plan for the future of our school facilities. The task force reviews current building conditions, enrollment trends, and long-term needs to help ensure safe, functional, and welcoming learning environments for all students. Through collaboration, transparency, and data-driven decision-making, the group is committed to making responsible recommendations that support student success and serve the community now and into the future.
This work builds on the district’s 2018 Facilities Task Force, which led to a $190 million bond referendum approved by voters with 85% support. That investment resulted in the construction of Jefferson High School, Ben Reifel Middle School, and Marcella LeBeau Elementary, along with numerous district-wide improvements. The 2018 task force also recommended planning for the future replacement of Whittier Middle School due to its projected lifespan. As that timeline approaches in 2026, Whittier has become a key focus alongside other current and future facility needs. The current task force is charged with reviewing growth projections, evaluating facility needs, and identifying prioritized, fiscally responsible projects for a potential future bond to present to the School Board.
