President's Greetings

Hello ABEA Members!

I am looking forward to another successful year with ABEA. We have just returned from a highly rewarding Winter Conference in Sedona, Arizona, which provided numerous opportunities to learn in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. It was a valuable chance to connect with our peers in business and marketing education, allowing us to focus solely on professional development and networking, free from the usual responsibilities of working with students.

This year, we are planning an even more expansive conference in Tucson, Arizona, at the Westward Look Resort & Spa. The WBEA Conference will bring together business and marketing educators, as well as presenters, from our neighboring states. This will be an excellent opportunity to engage with educators from other regions and exchange innovative ideas being implemented across the country.

Additionally, we are excited for the upcoming ACTEAZ Summer Conference, where Elena has organized a range of exceptional workshops and activities. Each year offers something unique, and the Tucson event will be no exception, offering a fantastic chance to learn and connect with fellow career and technical education professionals from across the state.

I encourage you to take full advantage of any networking opportunities that arise, as they often provide some of the most valuable experiences at the conference. I will be sharing details about our board meetings in the emails I send out. If you are interested in attending a meeting or potentially joining the board, we welcome your participation!

Looking forward to another incredible year ahead!

The Winter Conference was a truly enriching experience, combining professional development with meaningful connections. The 80s-themed mystery murder activity fostered collaboration and improvisation, strengthening our ability to work together.

Friday’s sessions offered valuable resources to enhance classroom instruction and support CTSOs, highlighted by an insightful AI presentation from Amanda Potts. The afternoon featured engaging tours, including visits to the Sedona Candle Gallery and the renowned Tlaquepaque Plaza.

While dinner was self-arranged, many attendees gathered to share a meal, further strengthening relationships within the business and marketing education community. By Marcia Mendoza

Realistic expectations?

I have been thinking a lot lately about the concept of "REALISTIC". Are we setting our students and members up for a realistic future. Do we help them to be prepared for the struggles in their career and the growth those struggles can provide?
This reflection came after a lecture on planning and goals with 3 of my different classes. The main idea was chunking and focusing on Actions, Not Outcomes. As an Educator it had me thinking about how often do we get so focused in on the goal or the outcome we need and leave behind us the actions that could have, would have and should have helped us accomplish those outcomes so much more easily. I say it like that because we are all awesome and always hit those desired outcomes.
Roll all that up and I found myself at realistic. How much easier is life when we focus on the actions we need to take to reach our goals? Am I doing this? If I am not how am I helping to instill it in my classroom? If we cannot be realistic and utilize realistic tools and skills, how are we teaching it, modeling it and showing kids how to live it. The best part of being a teacher if getting regular opportunities to examine, adjust and keep moving on.

A Memorable Experience at the AME/ABEA Winter Conference

Attending my first AME/ABEA Winter Conference was an incredible experience. After years of wanting to go, I finally made it happen—and it exceeded my expectations.

A highlight of the event was the mystery murder dinner, where I had the chance to network with fellow educators while embracing the '80s theme and even playing a role in solving the case. The workshops on day two provided practical strategies I can immediately implement in my classroom and CTSO preparation, while the scenic tours offered a refreshing break and a glimpse of Sedona’s beauty.

Visiting the candle shop was another standout moment—the founder’s passion was inspiring, and many of us couldn’t resist taking advantage of the exclusive discount. The Tlaquepaque tour also provided fascinating insights into the inner workings of this unique arts village.

The conference concluded with the ABEA meeting, where I gained valuable knowledge on how to become more involved in the organization. Overall, this event was both enriching and enjoyable—I’m already looking forward to the next one!

Leadership and Growth at the 2025 WBEA Conference

Attending this year’s Western Business Education Association (WBEA) Conference as President-Elect was an honor as I prepare for my transition to President in 2026. The DoubleTree Hotel provided an excellent venue, ensuring a seamless experience for attendees.

Throughout the conference, I participated in key meetings, including budget planning with the outgoing president and Executive Committee discussions on strategic initiatives. One of my primary responsibilities was developing an action plan and appointing leadership positions—initially a challenge, but by the event’s end, several members stepped forward to fill critical roles.

In the WBEA Nominating and Strategic Planning Committees, I helped review officer applications and presented my proposed action plan. At the Executive Board Meeting, I outlined my budget and strategic goals while seeking input on remaining appointments. The evening reception provided a valuable networking opportunity with an engaging keynote speaker.

I also co-led the Professional Development Leadership Training session and attended insightful workshops on economic freedom, artificial intelligence, and personal finance. On Sunday, I led the Outgoing/Incoming Officers & Directors meeting, finalizing transition plans before the ceremonial passing of the WBEA gavel.

The conference was an invaluable experience, reinforcing the importance of leadership, collaboration, and professional growth. I look forward to the journey ahead as I continue preparing for my role as WBEA President. By Hector Reyes

WBEA 2025

The 2025 Western Business Education Association (WBEA) Conference in Billings, MT, was an enriching experience, offering valuable insights, resources, and networking opportunities for business educators. Engaging sessions, dynamic keynote speakers, and professional development opportunities provided tools to enhance teaching and leadership.

A key highlight was the focus on AI in education. As AI transforms the business world, presenters demonstrated how it can streamline lesson planning, automate tasks, and support student learning. With AI’s growing role, educators must guide students in its proper use.

The conference also provided free, ready-to-use resources, from digital tools to curriculum guides, helping educators stay current with industry trends. Inspiring keynote speakers covered critical topics such as the gig economy, teacher toolkits, and coworking spaces.

The exhibitor hall featured vendors offering valuable materials, including textbooks and digital resources, while networking opportunities allowed educators to exchange ideas and build lasting professional relationships.

Overall, the conference was a highly valuable experience, equipping educators with knowledge, tools, and connections that will enhance their teaching and professional growth.

Desert Vista Business Students Explore Careers on Phoenix Field Trip

Phoenix, AZ – On February 28, Desert Vista High School business students, led by Mrs. Maestas, embarked on an educational field trip organized by Tempe Union High School District’s CTE Department. The trip provided hands-on exposure to careers in sports management and entrepreneurship.

Students began with an exclusive visit to the Phoenix Suns, where industry professionals shared insights into careers in sports management. They participated in a Suns Trivia Challenge and received resume feedback from team members.

Next, they visited Yard Milkshake Bar, where owner Scott Mills discussed his journey as a franchisee, offering valuable business advice. At The Department Coworking, community manager Ben Griffith highlighted the role of coworking spaces in fostering innovation.

The day concluded with an exciting Phoenix Suns vs. New Orleans Pelicans game, capping off a trip filled with career inspiration and real-world learning.

“This experience gave students insight into sports management, entrepreneurship, and modern business environments,” said Mrs. Maestas.

Central High School – Business & Culinary Collaboration

Just before Spring Break, Central High School’s Business Management and Culinary students completed their annual Food Truck Challenge, now in its third year. This hands-on project integrates entrepreneurship, marketing, and culinary arts, offering real-world experience.

This year’s theme, Global Flatbread, had Business students managing project timelines, designing food trucks, and developing marketing strategies, while Culinary students focused on menu creation, pricing, and execution.

The challenge continues to foster creativity, teamwork, and practical skill development, preparing students for future careers.
