Parsons Weekly Update
November 6, 2023
Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.
I know that comments take time but they are very important to children and families. Some teachers (I haven't heard this here ;)) dread conferences. While I know they are stressful and exhausting, I always loved conferences. I loved the opportunity to talk to parents about their children, to share all the positives, and to work together to help their child be the best they could be. As you enter this exhausting week, just remember you are doing very important work. Give yourself a pat on the bat and grant yourself a lot of grace. You are doing great!

Bond News
We have exciting news for all GSD Community!
This summer, the Gibraltar School District Board of Education has approved placing no tax-rate increase bond proposal on the November 7th ballot. Voter approval of the bond proposal will not increase residents' current tax rate.
The $81.5 million no-tax-rate increase bond proposal is designed to improve the learning environment and update the interior and exterior of school buildings.
The bond proposal will allow the school district to make improvements in five key areas:
1. enhancing elementary educational programming;
2. enhancing student safety and security;
3. improving the learning environment;
4. expanding arts, athletics, and play areas; and,
5. addressing aging facility infrastructure and, increasing building efficiencies.

Background Checks
Please do not send Veronica background checks late. It is your responsibility to turn in parent volunteer forms to the office and to check the Background Check list in Google Docs. You can check this at any time to see if a family member has already been approved.
You may not get a background check done the day of an event. It is not safe and it causes congestion in the office. For future events, background checks must be completed a week before an event.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, November 9th and Friday, November 10th. Both days are half days of school for students but full days of work for staff.
- Our evening conferences will be held on Thursday, November 9th till 7:00 pm.
- Please allow yourself time to take a lunch break and a dinner break between afternoon conferences and evening conferences.
- In person conferences and Zoom conferences can be offered to accommodate families.
- Please reach out to Wendy, Jackie, Dane, Julia, or Angel if you need support and/or would like them to sit in with you.
- I am happy to sit in any conferences that you like. I am here to support you!
Please share with both Veronica and I your Parent-Teacher Conference schedule once it is finalized and make sure to take attendance so I can get a percentage of participation afterwards. I need this information for the Annual Education Report. THANK YOU!
I have asked our PTO to purchase dinner for you on Thursday. I have also created a Sign Up Genius for a Soup and Salad lunch/dinner. Let's plan on Thursday unless PTO gets dinner and then we can have this lunch on Friday. I will bring an Instapot full of soup and provide the bowls, utensils, and napkins. Trusting Readers Book Study
Book meeting 2:
We discussed Chapter 1: All Roads Lead to Independent Reading. We had a great discussion about trust and engagement in the literary classroom. Here were some many takeaways.
- The right anchor chart can provide visuals that support engagement and expectations.
- "Engagement in learning is one of the major contributors to student achievement."
- "Trust plays a key role in this work, as trusting relationships between students and teachers are the foundations of thriving classrooms that intentionally invite engagement in reading."
- Beware of emphasizing time alone when thinking about reading stamina. Instead view stamina as a by product of deep engagement. When this occurs, so does meaning making.
Our next book study date is
What to expect:
We will meet twice per month for 30 minutes each time
Everyone reads at their own pace, please attempt to keep up

Veteran's Day Information
We are celebrating Veterans Day at Parsons with an assembly on November 10th , 2023. We would like to include decorations in our hall to celebrate this important day. Families have received this note to participate by providing a photo. K and 1st are making pictures of poppies with Mrs. Shuman. Second and 3rd are singing songs with Mrs Arndt. Mrs. Revoir is planning on asking 4th to decorate gift bags, and 5th to write thank you letters. The Lighthouse team is going to read a thank you poem at the assembly.
Turkey Trot Info
i-Ready
Some important things to know right away.
- The first year, focus more on the student's My Path than teacher assigned lessons.
- i-Ready should not be a filler but part of the instructional day.
- Lesson passed is an important focus but beware of comparing lessons passed between students. Phonics lessons are shorter and take less time than comprehension.
- 35-45 minutes per week is the sweet spot
Here's how we did this week!

Orange Frog
Here is what Amanda saw in Kim!
I chose Kim this week, because she is ALWAYS smiling and positive! Even if a problem arises, Kim always puts a positive spin on things and chooses to look at the bright side. In addition, she not only acts positively herself, but projects it onto others as well! Kindness is contagious.
Kim is also extremely helpful to myself or anyone in need. She is very selfless in the way that she will give up her own time to help another. This is shown in the way that she leads the Orange Squad!
Kim's students love her, because they also know how kind and caring she is, and that they can count on her. Kim is a staple at Parsons!! :)
I asked Kim the following questions.
- What brings you joy? Watching my children thrive and succeed at the things they love
- How do you bring joy to others? I smile and say, "I hope you have a great day!" Also, I love to give hugs, big squeezy ones!
- Who is someone that brings joy to you? Jack and Audrey
Spark Student of the Week: Colton L
Colton has really impressed me with his positivity and kindness this year. I have seen a lot of growth in Colton from 4th to 5th grade. Colton is a good role model to others.
I asked Colton the following questions.
- What brings you joy? Sports, Duck and deer hunting, and his horse Moose
- How do you bring joy to others? Be nice and respectful
- Who is someone that brings joy to you? My friends and family

Bite Sized PD
If Someone is… If someone is falling behind in life, you don’t have to remind them. Believe me, they already know. If someone is failing at work, they know. If someone is struggling in their relationships, with money, with self image, they know. It’s what consumes their thoughts each day. What you need to do for those who are struggling is not to reprimand, but encourage. Tell them what’s good about their lives, show them the potential that you see. Love them where they are. When we can’t see clearly for ourselves, we need others to speak greatness over us. People don’t need you to tell them what’s wrong with their lives, they already know. They need you to reassure them that they can still make it right.
