National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th - October 15th is a time throughout the year dedicated to celebrating National Hispanic Heritage. During this time of celebration we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture.

Digital PSAT Day - October 2

All FISD 10th and 11th grade students are automatically registered to take the PSAT/NMSQT, free of charge, during the school day on October 2, 2024. The PSAT helps students identify academic areas of strength and growth, as well as prepare for college entrance exams like the SAT. The PSAT/NMSQT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program for students in 11th grade and the National Recognition Programs for both 10th and 11th grade students.

This fall the PSAT/NMSQT will be administered in a digital format that will provide an overall easier testing experience for students. Your student will take the PSAT/NMSQT on October 2nd using their own school-issued device. Students are strongly encouraged to opt-in to the District’s 1 for All Chromebook program to ensure device compatibility with online testing. If your student has not opted in to the 1 for All Chromebook program, there will be a limited number of Chromebooks available on test day on a first come, first served basis.

IMPORTANT PSAT INFORMATION FOR ALL STUDENTS – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2

Grades 9 and 12

All FISD 9th and 12th grade students will have late arrival and report to campus at 12:15pm.

Grades 10 and 11

The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered on campus on Wednesday, October 2 to 10th and 11th graders only.

Testing will begin at 9:00 AM sharp and anyone who arrives late will not be allowed to test. Students taking the PSAT are not permitted to access cell phones or smart watches during the exam. Devices must be powered off and stored in a designated location during the exam. If a student is observed with any prohibited electronic device in the testing room or during a break their scores will be canceled.

Students will receive an email by September 30 with their test room number.

Students with late arrival 1A must arrive by 9:00 AM. Students who will miss a dual credit course due to the PSAT must communicate with their professor prior to test day.

Students should bring the following on test day:

  • pencils
  • (can bring) their own approved calculator. *The Desmos graphing calculator (desmos.com/calculator) is embedded in the test, and school calculators will be provided for Juniors.
  • snacks and drinks (which may only be consumed during official breaks)

For questions about the PSAT, please contact the Campus Testing Facilitator, Lauren Phillips, at PhillipsL@friscoisd.org.

GPA Opt-Out Reminder

In order to encourage commitment and retention to a Fine Arts or Athletics program for a full four years and encourage participation in the upper level courses in these areas, students have the option to exclude from the weighted GPA calculation one credit course each year in grades 11 and 12. This allows juniors and seniors who are on track to meet all graduation requirements to participate in the following programs in the third and/or fourth year on a GPA-exempt basis. This option should only be considered by students who have a weighted GPA of 5.0 or greater.

The eligible single courses include the following:

- Theater/Tech Theater - Dance/Drill Team - Cheer

- *Band- Color Guard - Choir - Orchestra

- **Athletics/Manager - Athletic Trainer

*Not to include ensemble

**Not to include off-campus PE

To exclude a course from the weighted GPA calculation, students must have two years participation in the single program of interest in two previous school years during high school. The GPA Opt-Out form opens, September 4th, and students must complete the “GPA Opt Out” form by the deadline of October 1st to request an exemption for this school year. The exemption form can be found in the student portal under the “GPA Opt-Out” tile. The GPA exemption in Fine Arts only applies for areas of Fine Arts that do not contain options for weighted credit; thus Art is not an eligible area (Advanced and AP Art courses are available in the four-year pathways).

See 2024-2025 Academic Guide for information.

All information regarding GPA for Rank can be found in FISD's GPA for Rank Policy.
