CLASS NEWS CLASS NEWS

Hello Fourth-Grade Families,

We’ve had another wonderful week, and we can hardly believe how quickly time is flying! Thank you so much for your continued support. We are incredibly proud of our 4th grade Tigers and the wonderful way they are adjusting to 4th grade.

Looking ahead, Tuesday is International Dot Day! This fun celebration encourages creativity and self-expression through dot-themed activities. Students are welcome to wear dot-inspired outfits, as long as they are school-appropriate and fit the theme. We can’t wait to see everyone’s creativity shine!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,
The Fourth Grade Team

Mathematics

Math Focus for Next Week:

This week, we will focus on number patterns and adding and subtracting larger numbers.

Learning Objective(s):

4th Grade students will be able to:

  • Find the rule to complete a number pattern.
  • Add and subtract multi-digit numbers fluently

This week we will begin our study our 4 times facts - quiz NEXT Week - 9/25/26

Home Support:

We encourage families to spend a few minutes each day practicing these important math skills at home:

  • Practice 4s Multiplication Facts: Spend a few minutes each day practicing the 4 times tables. Flash cards, math fact games, skip-counting by 4s, or quick oral practice are great ways to build fluency. Encourage your child to practice until the facts become automatic.

Even 5–10 minutes of math practice each day can make a big difference! Thank you for partnering with us to support your child’s learning at home.

English Language Arts & Reading

Focus for Next Week:

Next week is all about main idea and supporting details! For reading, will practice finding the main idea of a text by identifying the who, what, where, and why of an article. For writing, we will begin our paragraph writing unit by learning to write topic sentences that convey the main idea of a paragraph. We will also continue practicing the RACE method of responding to a passage. Lastly, in word study, we will learn our first spelling list and have our first spelling test on Friday, September 18.

Learning Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • Spell words with prefixes, suffixes, and vowel teams correctly.

  • Determine the main idea of a passage.

  • Write a topic sentence that conveys the main idea of a paragraph.

  • Write a response to a passage using the RACE method: restate the question, answer the question, cite text evidence, and explain how the evidence supports the answer.

Home Support:

Our first spelling test is next Friday! After learning and practicing the words in class, students will take a practice spelling test on Thursday. We will check the practice tests in class, and then students will bring them home so they know which words to study. You can help your student prepare by quizzing them on the words they missed. You can also see the spelling list at our homework link if you would like to help your child practice in advance.

You can help your child practice finding the main idea by asking them to identify it in stories they encounter: “What was the main idea of the chapter you just read?” “What was the main idea of the movie we just watched?”

Science

What is Happening in Science/STEM?

This week in science students will continue learning about Forces and Motion. Students were able to observe the transfer of energy before their very eyes while dropping two balls at the same time. Students completed the week with a Crash Course Lab that modeled the transfer of energy of a penny to the tape. This week students will focus on academic language where they will define the word and illustrate the meaning. They will complete the week in reading an informational text that uses their academic words, then learn to read a graphic organizer that models energy, speed, collision and transfer of energy through pictures and symbols.

Academic Language We Are Using This Week

energy, force, speed, collision, collide, transfer
