A Message From Your Principal A Message From Your Principal

Dear Cedar Point Families,

It was such a pleasure to welcome families during last week’s meet and greet. I am always open to receiving feedback and look forward to a collaborative partnership. One of the topics we discussed related to the status of hiring a school nurse. Please accept my assurance, I have been in communication with Health Services Office advocating for Cedar Point to have a permanent nurse. Our school is a priority. Thank you for your patience.

As we enter the 3rd quarter, I wish to recognize our entire faculty and staff for their steadfast ability to keep students focused on succeeding academically while promoting their well-being and safety. Cedar Point has an ambitious Continuous Improvement Plan, anchored in high expectations for student achievement.

I want to thank our Cedar Point PTO for all of the classroom supplies, delicious snacks and refreshments. These small gifts of appreciation, for the school team, makes a huge difference.

Thank you also to our enhanced CPAC (Cedar Point Advisory Council). The Council launched their successful first meeting of the school year, lead by our Chairperson, Mrs. Grace Riley! She is commended for leading the council with implementing outstanding outcomes and goals for the remainder of the school year. Mrs. Erin Stroh, our Vice-Chairperson; Mrs. Kristin Matthews, Secretary; Mrs. Lori Betz, Superintendent’s Advisory Council on Instruction (SACI) Representative; Mrs. Kelly Machovec, SACI Alternate, as well as our CPES staff and parent volunteers, are also recognized for their willingness to serve!

Yours in Education,

Aerica A. Williams, M.Ed., Principal

"Imogene's Antlers" by David Small

Our Gifted Education and Talent Development Teacher, Mrs. Brazier, hosts gifted push-in lessons with kindergarten, first grade and second grade classes.

This month, kindergarten students read "Imogene’s Antlers" by David Small. In the story, Imogene wakes up to find that she’s grown a huge pair of antlers in her sleep. The story shows how the antler’s impact Imogene’s life in both positive and negative ways. After reading the story, each student selected an animal part (elephant ears, giraffe’s long neck, etc.) and illustrated and/or wrote about how this new animal part would impact his/her life.

First grade students have begun to explore tangrams. After learning about the legend of how tangrams were first created, students worked independently to solve tangram puzzles with shape outlines as well as silhouette puzzles. You can access a digital set of tangram puzzles at: https://polypad.amplify.com/tangram

In second grade, students learned the visual-spatial card game Swish! In this game, students flip, rotate and slide transparent cards to match up colored balls and hoops. Students can create two, three and four-card Swish! sets.

Kindergarten

WE'VE MOVED! On Jan. 30, our kindergarten classes relocated to transition classrooms in the building while our regular classrooms undergo renovation. Students put on their (paper) hard hats and got to work, moving their supplies to their temporary classrooms down the hall with the help of parent and 5th grade student volunteers (thank you!). We look forward to seeing our newly-refreshed classrooms again in March!

1st Grade

January is the month for fresh starts, resolutions, goal setting, the post-holiday blues, SNOW DAYS 🙂 and much more! This is the time of year where we see our students transform from beginning first graders into experienced first graders. We will continue to set new academic and social goals, building upon the foundational skills we set at the beginning of first grade.

4th Grade

As part of our Living Systems and processes unit, fourth graders got to dissect a flower to find the petal, sepal, stamen, stigma and pistil during a Science experiment activity.

The students also participated in a Mystery Science activity called, "Why do plants grow flowers?" where they got to create their own bees and flowers. Then, they used coffee grounds and cinnamon with the science partner to simulate how flowers are pollinated. They learned that butterflies, hummingbirds, birds, and even bats are pollinators local to Virginia.

In VA History, the students got to learn about the role of VA in New American Nation including the importance of the Declaration of Rights and the significance of George Mason, James Madison and George Washington.

In Math, students learned all about decimal number sense and computation. They got to learn how to correctly read, write, represent and identify decimals expressed through the thousandths. They also learned how to compare, order and add/subtract within word problems.

5th Grade

Last week, each of our 5th grade classes had the opportunity to visit our Tech Lab for a day-long field trip. Students spent the entire day immersed in the world of electrical, software and mechanical engineering.

With the help our Tech Lab teachers, Mrs. Solomon and Mrs. Brafford, and parent volunteers, students worked with Block code and investigated electromagnets and static electricity; experimented with circuitry, LEDs and actuators; worked with C++ code and then collaboratively built a prototype to solve a problem apply movement using actuators and C++ code.

Thank you to our parent volunteers who came and helped out and to the Cedar Point PTO for providing pizza lunches for each class!
