Month of Giving

We have three opportunities this month for our Prairie Panthers to experience the joy of giving to those in need. We encourage you to participate in at least one of our efforts to help brighten the holiday season of many in the Kansas City Metro. We had a canned food drive during Art in the Garden in September. These cans are being boxed up by 6th grade leaders and will be donated to support meals for Johnson County families. Your child and their special guest are encouraged to bring a coat or blanket to donate to the SMSD Clothing Exchange to keep our SMSD families warm this winter.

Later in the month, PTA sponsors a Snow Ball gift giving campaign through Operation Breakthrough. We will also kick off a Granola Bar drive the first week in December to help fill winter break backpacks for students in KCK. Please talk about these efforts with your family and discuss how you would like to make a difference this holiday season!

Resources for our Prairie Families in Need

Student Nutrition Services

Student Nutrition Services is an important operation in the Shawnee Mission School District and a lot of that is because educators know students learn better when they have the food they need to stay healthy and grow. The Shawnee Mission School District will continue to serve breakfast and lunch in our schools to students.

Any family whose household income has changed recently due to unemployment, reduction in hours, or other financial shifts can still apply (or reapply) for free or reduced meals.

Click here to find out more information about the Shawnee Mission student nutrition program.

Click on the “Free & Reduced Meal” tab for information on applying for free and/or reduced meals.

If you or your family members are seeking assistance you may also reach out to our Prairie social worker, Amanda Mingori (amandamingori@smsd.org) , or Principal, Kristen Jones (kristenjones@smsd.org). Some Prairie families have reached out to offer a variety of levels of support, so please do not hesitate to contact one of us and we will help guide you to the support your family needs.

Coat and Blanket Drive

This year, we are also encouraging students and special guests to bring in gently used winter coats and blankets to support the SMAC Clothing Exchange.

We are accepting coats of all sizes, from infant to adult, and blankets from lap size to bed size. Let’s help keep SMSD residents warm this winter by donating those coats and blankets our families are no longer using! Donations can be dropped off in the large barrels located inside at the East Arrival Door and in the Main Foyer.

Special Guest Day Friday, 11/07

Special Guest Day is a fun Prairie tradition! Each student may invite one special guest to spend time doing an activity in their classroom and having lunch with them in the cafeteria. Guests need to bring their own lunch to enjoy. There will also be time for guests to visit the book fair with their student!

We needed our guests to be registered so PTA can make name tags and help checkin our guests in a safe manner. The deadline for registering was Nov. 3rd. Did you miss the deadline? Please be sure your child's teacher knows who is attending so they can plan for their activity. Your guest will need to follow our normal procedures and checkin with their ID through the office.

Due to space and safety constraints, each student is allowed only one guest. See the schedule below!

Book Fair This Week!

This fall, we will accept all forms of payment during our book fair, but an eWallet is the smart way to pay!

Why should you consider setting up an eWallet account?

  • When you create an eWallet account, you can share the link with any friends, family, or special people in your child’s life who may not get to attend the book fair in person.
  • Creating an eWallet account helps our very long lines on Special Guest Day move more quickly!
  • It’s an easy way for your child to have money to spend during their class visit without carrying around cash that can easily get lost.

Six year old Ruby Bridges stepped into the history books in 1960 when she integrated William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, becoming a national icon for the civil rights movement.

On November 14th we recognize her historic steps. Whether you walk to school, wear purple, or focus on creating a dialogue, this day is one for us to continue the conversation and take part in our own forms of activism to bring an end to racism and all forms of bullying.

Picture Retakes, Class & Club Pictures: 11/14

Picture retakes are rescheduled for November 14th. Contact Julie Keogh at 993-4400 or email her at juliekeogh@smsd.org to arrange for your child to be on the picture retake list.

  • We will also take class and club pictures on that day.
