We ask that kids not attend.
Welcome...
We are pleased to welcome Shannon Mossburg to the Liberty staff. Ms. Mossburg will be our new crossing guard! She currently works in the kitchen at McCord Middle School and is excited to have the opportunity to connect with and care for our Liberty Leopards who bike and walk to school each day. Be sure to wave at her as you’re going by the school entrance.
School Safety Drills
Liberty will be participating in school-wide safety drills next week. Students and staff will practice lock-down and rally point drills. We realize that safety drills have the potential to create anxiety for children. Teachers will review expectations and procedures with students so they feel prepared for those moments.
Our age appropriate conversations will be clear and concise for our particular group of students. The language we use at school is just another way we try to be safe. We encourage you to speak to your child about these drills, if you feel it would be helpful. If you happen to notice our entire student body outdoors, know that we are likely practicing our routine safety drills.
DARE Instruction
You may have noticed the Franklin County Sheriff vehicle parked in front of Liberty this week. This is Deputy Jason Hollenbach's vehicle. Deputy Jason started teaching the D.A.R.E. Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) to our 5th Graders.
Deputy Jason is very excited to be teaching the D.A.R.E. program at Liberty. This week he brought along a fellow colleague, Deputy Sam, with his dog Mando. Fifth grade parents may have heard a little about Mando, He is a black Boxer who joined the Therapy K9 Unit in 2024. Mando really enjoyed meeting our 5th graders and also visited some of our other classrooms.
Beginning of the Year Testing
Our students will soon begin taking the NWEA MAP Growth assessment. This computer-adaptive test helps us measure what your child knows and what they are ready to learn next. Unlike traditional tests, MAP Growth adjusts to your child's learning level. If they answer a question correctly, the next one is more challenging; if they miss one, the next one becomes easier. This gives us a personalized look at their academic growth over time.
How You Can Help at Home:
Ensure your child gets a good night's sleep before test days.
Provide a healthy breakfast on the morning of testing.
Remind them to simply do their best - this test is just a tool to help us teach them better.

New State Law Brings Attendance Changes to Ohio Schools
This week's blog post from Superintendent Trent Bowers.
Heading into the 2026 - 2027 school year, all public schools across Ohio are working under new state attendance rules required by House Bill 96. State leaders have made tracking attendance a major priority. As Governor Mike DeWine shared when launching the state’s attendance dashboard, students only need to miss two or three days a month to be considered chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism isn’t just a school issue, it is a community issue.
Data from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce shows that over a quarter of Ohio students missed 10% or more of the school year over the past 2 years.
In Worthington Schools, our first expectation is to “Be Kind to Kids.” Part of being kind is holding high standards and making sure our kids are in class so they can learn, grow, and connect with trusted adults. When school started on August 19th, our goal was to build a culture where every student feels seen, valued, and supported to reach their full potential as confident communicators, critical thinkers, and resilient learners.
We know kids get sick. We know family emergencies happen. But HB96 changes how schools and courts address attendance, and we want to be upfront with you about what to expect.
WKHS Color Guard - 4th - 8th grade - Register by Sunday, August 30th
Interested in the Color Guard? We have a newer initiative that started last year called Color Guard Club. This is a great opportunity for students in grades 4 - 8 to get some color guard and dance experience/exposure, and to perform with the marching band at a few football games.
