AHS/DNG Counselor's Corner
September 2025
September is here, and we’re already off to a great start at Aledo High School! As routines settle in, our counseling team is busy connecting with students through classroom lessons, individual meetings, and campus events. This month, we’re focusing on building strong foundations—helping students set goals, adjust to their new schedules, and learn about resources available to them throughout the year.
We are also beginning our state-required guidance curriculum in Advisory, starting with Suicide Awareness, an important lesson designed to build understanding, safety, and support. Parents can always preview guidance topics on our counseling website. Check out this positive article reporting that teen suicide is on the decline!
If you're looking for ways to support your teen's mental health, this is a great article!
As always, we’re here to partner with you to support every Bearcat. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if we can help your student in any way.

2025-26 Guidance Lessons
High school counselors deliver the state-required guidance curriculum to students during their advisory classes each year. Parents may preview all lesson topics and materials at any time on our counseling website. In accordance with state law, three specific lessons require parent consent: Suicide Awareness (presented in September), Child Abuse and Human Trafficking (presented in April), and Dating Violence/Healthy Relationships (presented in February). Consent for these topics was included in the registration paperwork all students have already completed. If you need to update your permission, you can do so by logging into parent portal. You will select "Registration" under their child's name then go to tab 13 State of Texas Guidance Lessons 25-26 complete/update form then click "Next Form." (See graphic below)
Last year, our Counseling Department Advisory group helped us identify gaps in our guidance programming. While sharing the mandated topics through advisory is our most efficient way to get that information to all students, we know there are needs beyond the required topics for our students.
We are excited to announce that we will be offering FLEX guidance time for students who want a more in depth time to explore relevant topics. We will host these meetings in the AHS Lecture Hall on selected Tueadays for students to come and learn with us! Topics may include things like Mindfulness and stress management, Study Hall and Homework Help, Goal Setting Workshops, Transcript and Graduation Check-Ins, College Applications and Financial Aid info, Adulting 101 and much more!
Students will be able to sign up to attend during Advisory! Tell your students to be on the lookout for more info!

Need help with college or any post-secondary planning?
The Bound for Success (Go Center) program is a partnership between UTA and Aledo ISD where a dedicated College and Career coach works on our campus 1-2 days per week. When here, they will be working with students on college applications, financial aid, and so much more. While they do work for UTA, they can partner with you to help you with any college or technical school application to ensure you have the support you need. These partners have a wealth of knowledge in post-secondary planning and will work with our Counseling Team to bring another layer of service and support for our AHS students!
New This Year!
🎉 Mindset Monday at Aledo High School 🎉
Let’s start each week with positivity and purpose!
Every Monday, we’re setting the tone for the week ahead with Mindset Monday—a chance to focus on positive thinking, goal setting, and showing up with the right attitude.
🙌 What to Do:
Wear a T-shirt with a positive message—something uplifting, encouraging, or inspiring. Whether it’s about kindness, hard work, growth mindset, or mental wellness, your shirt can help someone start their week off right.
💡 Why It Matters:
A positive mindset sets you up for success—in school, in sports, in relationships, and in life. Mondays are the perfect time to reset, refocus, and choose positivity.
👕 Need Ideas?
Look for shirts that say things like:
“Be the reason someone smiles today”
“Progress, not perfection”
“Your mindset determines your success”
“Kindness is cool”
“You’ve got this”
Let’s build a school culture where encouragement is the norm and positive vibes are everywhere.
We can’t wait to see your shirts and your Monday mindset!

College & Career Readiness Focus
Starting this school year, every first Wednesday of the month is College & Career Readiness Day!
Students and staff are invited to wear shirts representing their favorite college, career, or military path.
Let’s celebrate goals, inspire dreams, and build a future-ready culture—together!
#AlllInAledo #GrowingGreatness
Hang Up & Hang Out!
Hang up and Hang out is off to a great start! Our Bearcats are connecting at lunch and having a great time!
There is still time to donate games!
We’re looking to build a collection of gently used card games (think UNO, Skip-Bo, Phase 10, regular playing cards, etc.) to create a welcoming space where students can relax, connect, and enjoy each other’s company without screens.
If you have any card games sitting at home collecting dust, we’d love to give them new life at school!
Donations can be dropped off at the front office or sent with your student to the counseling office. Thank you for supporting our students’ well-being! 💛🧡

Just for Juniors
Your student is settling into junior year, and September is the time to help them stay focused and organized as the semester gains momentum. Junior year is especially important—it’s when academic performance and involvement have the biggest impact on postsecondary opportunities.
📌 How Parents Can Support in September
-
Encourage PSAT preparation: The October PSAT serves as both SAT practice and a qualifier for National Merit and other scholarships.
-
Monitor grades closely: Junior year GPA is a key factor for college admissions and scholarship opportunities.
-
Talk about future plans: Help your student explore college, career, or military pathways by attending upcoming info sessions or encouraging a meeting with their counselor.
-
Promote involvement: Extracurricular activities—clubs, athletics, fine arts, or leadership roles—build skills and strengthen future applications.

Sophomore Scoop
Now that the school year is underway, September is a great time for your student to establish strong routines. Consistency with organization, study habits, and time management will set the tone for a successful sophomore year.
This is also an ideal month to encourage your student to get involved beyond the classroom. Clubs, athletics, fine arts, and service opportunities help students discover their interests and strengths while also building valuable connections with peers and mentors.
📌 How Parents Can Support in September
-
Check in on daily and weekly routines for organization and study time
-
Encourage participation in at least one extracurricular activity or campus organization
-
Begin casual conversations about future goals and career interests

Freshman Focus
By now, your student is beginning to adjust to life at Aledo High School—navigating new routines, meeting new teachers, and discovering what it means to be a Bearcat. September is the time to help them settle into healthy habits that will support them throughout high school.
📌 How Parents Can Support in September
-
Check in on routines: Encourage consistent sleep, organization, and study habits. These early patterns set the foundation for future success.
-
Promote involvement: Talk with your student about joining a club, sport, or activity. Connection to campus helps them feel engaged and supported.
-
Encourage self-advocacy: Remind your student that it’s okay to ask teachers or counselors for help—they’re building independence and problem-solving skills.
-
Monitor progress: A quick weekly review of grades in Canvas or Skyward can help catch small issues before they grow.
