Partnerships with Parents

St Brigid’s College is deeply committed to partnering with families to support every student in our community. I extend my sincere thanks to all parents and carers for their ongoing involvement in the life of the College.

As a community, we recognise that strong, collaborative relationships between home and school have a significant impact on both the academic and pastoral outcomes of our students. Our teaching staff are dedicated to keeping you informed about all aspects of your child’s progress and wellbeing. In turn, we encourage families to share updates with us—whether they relate to achievements beyond the classroom, challenges your child may be experiencing, or any absences from school. These insights help us better understand and support each student, acknowledging the complexities that can arise even in the lives of our youngest learners.

The College Parent Forum meets formally twice each term. All current parents are members of the Forum and are warmly invited to attend. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 1 April at 6.00pm in the College Community Room.

Each year group from Pre‑Kindergarten to Year 7 has a team of Parent Representatives who help foster community connection through our “Friendraising” initiative. Established in 2024, this initiative has continued to grow over the past two years. The Parent Forum provides funds for each year group to host an early‑year social gathering, with the aim of nurturing a culture of inclusiveness and belonging.

The College will hold its first formal Parent–Teacher–Student meetings on 21 April from 4.00pm to 7.00pm in the College Gymnasium. These meetings provide an opportunity for teachers to discuss your child’s academic progress and to gain valuable insights from families that support our shared efforts both in and beyond the classroom.

We hope that all families feel a strong sense of belonging within the St Brigid’s College community. When students see their families engaged and supportive of their school, it reinforces the value of their education and strengthens our distinctive Mercy charism.

From the Head of Faith and Mission

Ministry at St Brigid’s is fully alive!

Across the College, students, staff, and families are actively living out our Gospel values through service, justice initiatives, and vibrant liturgical life.

On Monday, the College hosted the first day of the annual Seeds of Justice Conference, welcoming students and staff from other Mercy schools in the metropolitan area. Seeds of Justice is a program offered across Mercy schools that encourages students to explore and engage with social justice in practical and meaningful ways. At St Brigid’s College, our Seeds of Justice group reflects this wider Mercy tradition, providing students with opportunities to deepen their understanding of justice and compassion.

On Wednesday the Young Vinnies Leadership Team attended the Vinnies Connection Event at Ozanam House in Canning Vale. Together with leadership teams from four other Catholic schools, including our brother school, Mazenod College, the student leaders spent time learning about Vinnies WA as an organisation, the important work undertaken by Vinnies, participating in service activities and tours, connecting with their peers from other schools, and brainstorming and planning ideas.

This coming Tuesday we celebrate the first Houses Day of the year. The Houses Day is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the lasting legacy and impact of the College House patrons. There are six Houses at the College: Docherty, McAuley, O’Connor, Rielly, Shine, and Watson. The Houses Day will provide the opportunity for students from Pre-Primary to Year 12 to spend time together in their respective Houses celebrating and continuing to learn about their patron, and of course have fun! You can read more about our House Patrons further along in this issue of our newsletter.

Finally, we offer our heartfelt thanks to the many families, friends and students who have so generously donated items for the Easter Egg Raffle for Project Compassion, purchased tickets, and enthusiastically promoted the raffle within our community. A special acknowledgement goes to our student leaders, in particular Year 6 Ministry Leader Archer M, Year 12 Ministry Leader Avaline B, along with all members of the Year 6 Ministry Team and the Young Vinnies Team, whose energy and commitment have been outstanding. Donations will continue to be gratefully received at Student Reception until this coming Monday, 23 March. The raffle will be drawn at the conclusion of the Easter Liturgy on the final day of the term, Wednesday 1 April.

As always, families and friends of the College are warmly invited to share in the liturgical life of our community. Please see below for upcoming celebrations and opportunities to participate.

Primary Inter House Swimming Carnival

The primary inter-house swim carnival was a fantastic day filled with excitement, house spirit, and great sportsmanship. Students from Year 3 to 6 gathered at the pool to compete in a range of swimming events and enjoy a day of friendly competition. Throughout the day, students took part in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly events. They also swam in fun novelty events; the highlight was the doughnut relay. It was wonderful seeing everyone get opportunity to participate and have a go.

The students cheered loudly for their friends as they raced to the finish, creating an energetic and supportive atmosphere around the pool. The house spirit was strong, with students proudly wearing their house colours and encouraging one another.

Congratulations to Watson House for winning Champion points and to O’Connor for winning the Spirit award. And a big congratulations to our individual champions.

Thank you teachers, parents and the Year 6 leaders for your support at the carnival. Your enthusiasm and organisation helped make the day a success. It wouldn’t have run so smoothly without you. I truly appreciate all the effort you put in to make the day enjoyable and memorable for our students.

From The Heads of Primary

It has been a wonderful and busy time in our Primary school, filled with rich learning experiences, joyful celebrations, and a strong sense of community.

The Fairy Tale themed disco was a fantastic success and certainly a highlight for many of our students. The boys and girls danced away the evening in a wonderful array of creative and colourful costumes, from princes and princesses to magical creatures and storybook characters. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, laughter, and joy, making it a truly memorable evening for all involved.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our parent volunteers who generously gave their time to decorate, assist with cooking, signing children in, and supervise throughout the disco. Your support and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated and play such an important role in building our vibrant school community. We also extend our sincere thanks to the staff who volunteered their time to supervise and ensure the event ran smoothly.

Last Friday, students from Years 2 to Year 6 gathered reverently to celebrate Mass, which was thoughtfully prepared and led by our Year 6 classes. The students demonstrated leadership, confidence, and a deep sense of responsibility as they guided the school community through the liturgy. Their clear reading, respectful participation, and organisation created a meaningful and prayerful experience for all in attendance. It was wonderful to see our older students modelling reverence and engagement, supporting younger students to participate fully. We thank our Year 6 students and staff for their preparation and for leading our community in such a special celebration of faith.

Our Year 3 and Year 5 students are to be congratulated on the way they approached their NAPLAN assessments over the past two weeks. They demonstrated perseverance, focus, and maturity, tackling each task with a calm and positive attitude. We are incredibly proud of the resilience they showed and the commitment to doing their personal best. These assessments are just one part of their learning journey, and it has been pleasing to see the confidence they brought to the process.

Today, our Kindy students enjoyed a special morning at Bush School. This hands-on experience provided valuable opportunities for exploration, imagination, and connection with the natural environment. The children planted seeds, made bird feeders, explored leaf rubbing, and created still life drawings using natural materials. It was wonderful to see their curiosity and engagement as they learned through play in an outdoor setting. These experiences support the development of independence, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the world around them.

Bush School also provides important opportunities for students to take managed risks, collaborate with others, and develop resilience in a natural setting. Through guided exploration, they learn to observe, question, and make sense of their environment, fostering early scientific thinking. It was especially pleasing to see the children working together, sharing ideas, and demonstrating respect for nature.

Thank you to the parent volunteers who assisted at Bush School today. Your support makes experiences like these possible and enriches the learning opportunities for our youngest students. We are grateful for the ongoing partnership between school and home that continues to support and enhance the learning and wellbeing of all our children.

Holy Week, all you need to know

We now look toward Holy Week, the most significant time in our Catholic tradition. In the lead up and during Holy Week, students will participate in morning and afternoon prayer liturgies from March 27 to April 1.

Each year group will take part by reenacting a moment from the Easter Story during Holy Week. These reflective and prayerful experiences provide a meaningful opportunity for our students to deepen their understanding of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. We look forward to gathering as a school community to share in these reverent and engaging liturgies.

We warmly invite parents to join our students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 in the Primary Quadrangle for daily Holy Week prayer liturgies. These reflective and prayerful gatherings provide a wonderful opportunity to share in the Easter story with our children.

Each prayer will be presented as a “frieze”, where selected students will hold a still pose while the prayer is read, helping to reenact a moment from the Easter story and will be approximately 10 minutes long.

Holy Week Liturgy Schedule:

  • Friday, March 27: 10:00 am & 2:45 pm
  • Monday, March 30: 8:40 am & 2:45 pm
  • Tuesday, March 31: 8:40 am & 2:45 pm
  • Wednesday, April 1: 8:40 am (followed by PP–Year 12 Liturgy in the College Gym)

Additional Events:

  • Monday, March 30, 2.15pm: Kindy Easter Hat Parade in the Early Learning Centre playground
  • Tuesday, March 31, 2.30pm: Pre Kindy Easter Hat Parade in the Early Learning Centre playground
  • Wednesday, April 1, 2:30 pm: Primary Easter Hat Parade on the Primary Oval

Our Term will conclude with the Easter Hat Parade for students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 at 2.30pm on April 1. We look forward to seeing the colourful and imaginative creations our students design for this special event.

Class Focus - Pre Primary

In Week 7, our Pre-Primary classes enjoyed a wonderful collaboration session with the Year 3 students during Religion. The Year 3 students created special “Friendship Books” about how to be a good friend, sharing thoughtful ideas such as being kind, helping others, including everyone, and using caring words.

The Year 3 students read their books to the Pre-Primary children and spent time discussing what friendship looks like in our school community. It was a lovely opportunity for the older students to take on leadership roles while supporting the younger children in their learning.

Our Pre-Primary students thoroughly enjoyed listening to the stories and spending time with the Year 3 students. It was a fantastic session of collaboration, connection, and bonding between the classes, while reinforcing the important message of showing kindness and being a good friend to others.

We look forward to celebrating Easter in our Religion lessons these next few weeks, with a range of engaging activities, including stories, crafts, cookie decorating, an Easter egg hunt, and the Easter Hat Parade for the final day of Term 1.

Visual Art in Primary - colours come alive

This term, students from Pre-Primary to Year Four have been exploring the art element of colour through a range of engaging painting, drawing and collage activities. Students learned about primary colours and experimented with mixing them to create secondary colours, as well as adding white and black to make different tints and shades.

Pre-Primary students created colourful apples and textured ice-cream collages, while Year One explored colour mixing through vibrant peacock paintings, dotted portraits inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and imaginative crazy colourful monsters.

Year Two painted bright flower gardens and designed layered landscape collages using their own textured painted papers. Year Three students mixed four shades of green to create detailed botanical borders for flamingo artworks, produced colourful oil pastel tigers, and began learning about Vincent van Gogh through bedroom drawing studies.

Year Four experimented with ink jellyfish drawings, Zentangle patterns and textured paper collage, developing confidence in both colour and line.

It has been a very engaging and productive term, with students enthusiastically exploring creativity and building their artistic skills.

These photos show some year three students experimenting with different shades of green on their botanical borders.

From the Dean of Students - Year 10

Our Year 10 cohort has made an outstanding start to the year, setting a positive tone for what promises to be an important and exciting stage of their schooling journey. They have consistently demonstrated strong work ethic, kindness, and respect in their daily interactions and should be very proud of the way they represent themselves and our College community.

From the outset, we have spoken with students about striving for high standards, both academically and personally. During the Pastoral Care Program (PCP) time, students have engaged in purposeful activities to support this, including working through their College Organiser to set meaningful term goals, as well as personal and academic goals. They have also explored forward planning documents and developed study timetables to help them manage their time effectively. We encourage families to take some time to look through the College Organiser together. It contains a range of valuable resources designed to support organisation, goal-setting, and wellbeing, and can be a helpful tool in planning as a family.

PCP sessions have also provided students with opportunities to engage in “Choose Your Own Adventure” lessons. These sessions allow students to select activities that best suit their interests and needs, including sporting and high energy activities, wellbeing sessions, and study skills workshops. It has been wonderful to see students take ownership of their learning and wellbeing in this way.

A highlight of the term was our involvement in International Women’s Day. A group of talented Year 10 Media Arts students collaborated with the Deans to script, film, and conduct interviews with students from across the College, from Pre-Kindy through to Year 12. This project has resulted in a fantastic video that captures the spirit of the day, you can view the video here

As we move further into the term, we are mindful that this is a busy assessment period for students. We encourage all Year 10s to maintain consistent study habits, seek support when needed, and make the most of opportunities such as Homework and Study Club. Caregivers are reminded that assessment schedules are available on SEQTA, which can assist with planning around appointments and commitments.

We also have several exciting events coming up for our Year 10 students:

  • Year 10 Retreat at the Boarding House – a valuable opportunity for reflection and connection (recess and lunch will be provided)

  • Excursion to RAC Arena for the bstreetsmart Road Safety Presentation – an important and engaging learning experience

And finally, some of the biggest and most exciting news for the year—our socials with Mazenod College have been confirmed! These are always highly anticipated events:

  • Wednesday 6 May (6:00–8:00pm) – Rollerama, Kalamunda

  • Thursday 23 July (7:00–10:00pm) – River Cruise

The River Cruise, in particular, has not been on the College calendar for several years, making its return especially exciting. We look forward to seeing many of our students involved in these wonderful opportunities to connect and build community.

Thank you to the staff and families for your continued support of our Year Ten cohort. It has been a fantastic start and we are excited for what lies ahead.

From the Heads of Learning - Focus on Languages, it's more than just words

Learning a language isn’t all about words and comprehension. It is far more encompassing. At SBC we not only manipulate language to express our thoughts, but we explore stories of migration and heritage all while making connections and testing new perspectives.

Our learning journey begins in Year 7 with students being exposed to the initial building blocks of language learning. For those who have already studied Italian, the emphasis with the help of our native speakers, has been on extending language into authentic contexts. The students have engaged in a deeper understanding of Italian celebrations in Venezia and the language of introductions through creative activities such as storytelling, book marking and the writing of postcards. The term will culminate with a delicious gelato to mimic the celebrations during Carnevale time.

In Year 8 students have been exploring the vocabulary, language structures and cultural elements related to the topic of school. Through engaging games, and presentations, they have discovered how school life works in Italy, from the subjects that students study to the daily traditions in Italian schools. Students are in the process of preparing mini movies to share on the school website to showcase not only their learning progress but also their own school. Coming soon!

Year 9 students are currently developing their understanding of the language used in student exchanges by learning key vocabulary, practising conversations, and completing sample exchange forms. Students are also researching and exploring places to visit in Italy, and everyday experiences that exchange students might encounter. This preparation will help them become more independent and culturally aware, equipping them with the practical language skills and knowledge they will need to take advantage of upcoming Exchange Student opportunities in Year 10.

A highlight for our Year 10 students this term has been our visit to the From Nonna, With Love Exhibition. Through visiting the exhibition, students have learnt about the language barriers, cultural adjustments, and resettlement struggles these women faced when building new lives in a foreign country. At the same time, they discovered stories of resilience, community, and achievement that demonstrated remarkable courage. By discussing these experiences, students were encouraged to think about the importance of connection and their own identity, and how strength and determination can shape both personal growth and a sense of belonging.

Finally, we say goodbye to our wonderful Language Assistants, Elisa and Martina, who have journeyed with us throughout the term, helping the students with cooking activities, language activities and excursions. A huge thank you also goes to the Pilot and the Gregory families for opening their home and hearts to make this experience a positive one. Of course, we will miss Elisa and Martina immensely.

Our House Patrons .... did you know....

The Docherty family has played a foundational role at St Brigid’s College since its beginnings, with a father and son serving as the first gardeners and helping to shape a welcoming community. This legacy continued through the three Docherty sisters: Sisters M. Veronica, M. Monica, and M. Rita, who, as Sisters of Mercy, faithfully served the College from 1929 to 1970 and sustained its spirit of service and community.

Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin in 1831, establishing a community dedicated to compassionate service, education, and care for those in need. Before her death in 1841, she had founded fourteen Mercy communities across Ireland and England, creating a lasting legacy of education, healthcare, and charitable works that continues to inspire today.

Sister Mary O’Connor, after her tenure as Primary Principal, has served as Board Chair, guiding the mission of Mercy education with wisdom and compassion. Sister Catherine O’Connor, who served as Head of Boarding in the seventies, returned in 2000 as Campus Minister, continuing to nurture the spiritual growth of students and staff alike.

Sister M. Teresa Rielly served as the first Mother Superior at St Brigid's College, which was established in 1929. Her thoroughness and efficiency were instrumental in founding the college, ensuring that it became a nurturing environment for education and spiritual growth. Under her leadership, St Brigid's Ladies' College, Lesmurdie, emerged as a lasting monument to her name and memory, reflecting her commitment to fostering wisdom and learning in the community.

Mother M. Brigid Watson, we remember her courageous decision in 1929 to purchase "St Brigid's in the Hills." In a time of economic hardship, she saw the need for a space where young people could thrive and grow in a supportive environment. Her commitment to providing a nurturing home for those in need.

Sister Mary Philip Shine dedicated her life to the establishment and development of education here at St Brigid's Ladies' College. From 1930 to 1949, she faced numerous challenges with courage and resilience. During her time as principal, Sister Shine had to navigate some challenging world wide events including the Great Depression, World War II and the Post WWII.
