Back to Basics and Community Reminders: Communication from the BHS Administrative Team

The following was shared with students and staff last week.

Itโ€™s amazing to think we are already at the interim point of Quarter Two and weeks away from celebrating the arrival of 2026! This year weโ€™ve welcomed new faces, implemented new attendance and electronic devices policies, and implemented structures to help maximize student belonging and learning. Weโ€™ve been grateful for the many ways students and staff have embraced this yearโ€™s theme of: Back to Basics and Building Community. Thank you!

Community Reminders

Flex, Advisory, Break

  • Students are required to attend Flex with the exception of seniors. If students have made an appointment with a teacher or have signed up for a library pass, they still must attend their Flex at the start of the period and show their Flex teachers the pass for accurate attendance taking. If a student does not attend Flex, it is considered a cut class and a detention will be issued.

  • Please follow the same process for Advisory. Advisory is required.

  • There are no โ€œopen gymโ€ times when classes are in session. This includes Flex and Advisory. (If coverage allows, Ru, Maurin or Dennis will open the back gym for students to use, but those students are supervised by a staff member.)

Substitute Teachers and Passes

There are no โ€œfree periodsโ€ at BHS; therefore, even when a teacher is absent, students are expected to go to either D109, LGI, Auditorium, or Cafeteria as directed in the morning email. Students who have permission to leave these spaces must sign-out on the Sign-Out Sheet and take a pass with them.

Cell Phones

Weโ€™ve been noticing an increase in the number of students in the hallways with cell phones. Cell phones must remain in the classroom cubbies, even when leaving during class to use the restroom, get a drink of water, etc. We will continue monitoring and accompanying students back to classes to return their phones to the cubbies.

Attendance

Kudos to students, teachers, Ms. Gallagher, Ms. Tate, and Ms. Vaughn for their work regarding this yearโ€™s credit-based attendance policy. There has been increased documentation provided to exempt absences, more accurate daily and class attendance being taken, and efforts made to get to school and class on time.

  • All students must check-in at the office if arriving at school after 7:45am. If tardy students arrive to first block classes without a pass from the office, teachers should send them to the office to check-in as present at school.

  • All students who are getting dismissed must do so through the main office. Students should not leave the building without a proper dismissal pass from the main office.

Parking

All registered cars parked on campus must display their permit. Please park only in spaces designated for high school student parking including in front of the building and behind the Bedford Public Library (not including those spaces adjacent to the library). All spaces directly adjacent to the library are for library patrons only.

Thank you,

The BHS Administrative Team

Guidelines For When A Student Is Sick

Please keep your student home from school if any one of the following occurs:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea within 24 hours.
  • Temperature of 100 degrees F or higher within the last 24 hours. Students with fevers may return to school after being fever-free for 24 hours, without fever-reducing medication.
  • Positive throat culture for strep. Students may return 24 hours after antibiotic treatment has begun.
  • Any symptoms of acute illness, such as a persistent cough, runny nose, and body aches.

Respiratory / COVID Guidelines

If Your Student Gets Sick at School, they should come to the health office to see the nurse. If your student calls a parent/guardian to be picked up and the student has not been evaluated in the health office, it will be considered a parent dismissal.

Reporting Communicable Illnesses: Please report all communicable illnesses to the attendance line or contact the health office directly at ๐Ÿ“ž781-918-4416.
