Perseverance Through Story-telling
At SJCA, the stories we read are chosen with care. Literature and fairy tales are not just entertainment—they awaken the moral imagination and help scholars see virtue lived out in characters they come to love.
Vigen Guroian, in Tending the Heart of Virtue, reminds us that fairy tales often place characters in situations of trial and difficulty, and in watching them endure, children learn that “life is full of struggle, but it is a struggle worth engaging.” In this way, stories enlarge a child’s sense of the possible and prepare the heart to recognize and desire the good.
This month’s virtue is Perseverance, and one story, that we all know and love, beautifully captures it is The Tortoise and the Hare. The hare, confident and careless, gives up the race; but the slow and steady tortoise never stops pressing forward. Children delight in the story, yet at the same time they glimpse a truth: success often comes through steady perseverance, not speed or ease.
When you read with your child at home, look for these moments in stories—times when characters push forward, overcome, or patiently endure. Talk about how perseverance might look in their own lives: finishing a math problem, practicing piano, or working through a challenge with a sibling. These connections make the virtue real and memorable.

A New Tradition Begins at SJCA
Our first-ever Homecoming Pep Rally was an unforgettable celebration of school spirit, unity, and friendly competition! The gym was buzzing with energy as students cheered on their houses in a series of exciting challenges. Delphi House rose to the top, claiming 1st place, with Corinth House following closely behind in 2nd—both showing incredible spirit and teamwork!
Highlights of the rally included high-energy cheerleading routines that wowed the crowd, an amazing performance by our pep band that kept the excitement sky-high, recognition of high-school athletes in fall sports, a tug-of-war battle between faculty and students where the teachers were victorious, and the much-anticipated announcement of this year’s Homecoming Court.
- Prince and Princess: Levi B & Elizabeth C
- Lord & Lady: Josh A & Evelyn K
- Duke & Duchess: Gavin B & Jessica D

It was a powerful kickoff to Homecoming week and a new tradition that’s here to stay! Go Lions!

Cross Country Update
The SJCA Cross Country team was back in action this past Saturday at Bartram Trail High School. This meet is called the Bale 'n Trail and it is unique because there are bales of hay that the runners have to jump over placed along the race route. The runners have come to either love or despise this race. Our Lions must be in the group that love it because nearly every running Lion ran a personal best time!
Notably, Evan R and Ryan V have improved their time significantly since the first race of the season. For the girls, Lilly C, Ava C, and Isabella F all ran more than six minutes faster than their previous race!
We are so proud of their continued improvement!
Their next meet is at Alligator Lake this weekend, where they will compete against more than 80 teams.
