Principal's Message
Dear Hornet Students, Families, and Caregivers,
Welcome back to another exciting school year at Essex High School!
Many thanks to the custodial, Facilities, safety, and nutritional services teams for their hard work over the summer months. From the many construction projects to the many summer meals distributed across multiple communities, EHS is supported by amazing people who take Hornet Proud to new levels!
Our amazing teachers and staff have spent this past week hard at work, prepping classrooms, refining curriculum, and organizing spaces, to ensure our school is vibrant, welcoming, and ready for our students. Fall athletics are already underway, and we can’t wait to fill the stands and cheer on our Hornet teams in competition this season!
Please take note of our start-of-year schedule for next week:
Monday: Open House! We look forward to seeing families and students to kick off the new year.
Tuesday: 9th graders return for their dedicated orientation day to find their footing, navigate their schedules, and get comfortable before the rest of the student body arrives.
Wednesday: All students in grades 9 through 12 report to officially kick off the school year together.
Quick Reminders for the First Week:
Be Familiar with your Schedule: Students won't have access to personal phones during the day, be aware of where you need to be for the first block of the day. Schedules can be printed for you, and are always available on student chromebooks.
Charged Chromebooks: Please bring your chromebook to school fully changed and ready to use.
Early Arrival Info: Building doors open at 8:00 AM. Students arriving early should report directly to the cafeteria or the library.
Phone-Free Day: EHS is a phone-free environment during the school day. Personal devices—including cell phones, earbuds/headphones, personal iPads, and smartwatches—must be turned off and put away for the entire school day.
Bring Your Best Self: Come ready to learn, stay engaged, build authentic connections, and foster a safe, welcoming community for everyone.
Limited Parking: The stormwater project isn’t quite finished and parking will be limited to start the school year. Please plan accordingly.
Enjoy these final few days of summer break, and we can’t wait to see you all next week!
Best,
Donald S. Van Nostrand
Principal

New Student Cell Phone Policies
All students are required to keep cell phones and other prohibited devices completely powered off, out of sight, and stored away in a backpack or locker. Students may not access or use their cell phones or other prohibited devices at any time during the academic day.
Failure to adhere to the school cell phone policy will result in the student placing their device in secure storage for the academic school day. Continued violations will require a parent or caregiver to retrieve the phone directly from Essex High School.
Student Drop Off & Pick Up Locations
As we prepare for another great school year, we would like to remind families about our student drop-off and pick-up locations. Following the map above helps ensure a safe and smooth flow of traffic for everyone. For any questions, please contact the main office at 802-879-7121 or hornets@ewsd.org.
Student Parking Permits
Parking permits are required for students to park during regular school hours. Students in Grades 11 and 12 can apply for a permit here.
Once you have completed the form, your parking permit will be available for pickup in the Main Office. An email will be sent out to students when permits are available to pick up. Please ensure that it is properly displayed in your vehicle.
Bell Schedule
The EHS building opens at 8:00 AM. Students arriving between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM should wait in the cafeteria or the library. The first bell rings at 8:30 AM, at which time students may head to their Block 1/2 class.
Block 1/2 classes begin promptly at 8:40 AM. Thank you for making it to class on time!
The final classes of the day (Block 7/8) end at 3:15 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and at 2:15 PM on Wednesdays (Early Release Days).
From The Attendance Office
Attendance is an important component of student learning and experience at Essex High School.

Extended Absence Form
Attention Students: If you have a planned absence of 3 or more days, please fill out the Extended Absence Form.

Recurring Appointments
If your child will have, or currently has, a weekly recurring appointment please reach out to the Attendance Specialist so all appointments can be entered into PowerSchool for Semester 1.

Senior Privileges
Eligible seniors will automatically be assigned Senior Privileges. This allows students to leave campus during their unscheduled blocks. Students or parents who prefer a class or study hall can opt out of Senior Privileges at any time.
To opt out for the start of the school year, please notify the main office through email (hornets@ewsd.org) or phone (802-879-7121) by August 21.
From School Counseling
Essex High School has shifted away from Naviance and will be moving to a new platform: Scoir
