Lincoln Elementary's 3rd Annual Read-A-Thon!!
Dear Lincoln Families!
Lincoln Elementary is excited to share that we will be holding our 3rd Annual Read-A-Thon again this year!!
Our Read-A-Thon will begin on Monday January 6, 2025.
We will be sending home instructions on how to activate your reader's personal page. This is where you will be able to view and record their progress.
We encourage you to activate your reader’s account over the holiday break by clicking on https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/323336333433/1 and following the simple instructions. This way your students(s) will be ready to begin when we return to school on January 6th!
The Read A Thon will again also work in conjunction with our February Book Fair! Students who read 400 minutes will earn $7 towards the book fair and students who read 800 minutes will earn $14 towards the Book Fair!
We hope EVERYONE participates! This is such a fun event that our students really love!
There will be a special prize for the K-2 and 3-5 classes that log the most minutes per student! Stay tuned!
Happy Reading!
Sincerely,
Lincoln Elementary Staff
Artist in Residency
After the break, students will have 2 special art classes to work with Author/illustrator Mrs. Jeanne Styczinski on a large piece of art to hang in our school. Mrs. Jeanne is having a book sale in advance of her visit with us. She is selling her books for $10 each and if you order ahead of time she can bring the books with her during her visit on January 14th and 15th. You can find out more by checking out her website. Jeanne's visit is sponsored by FTP- thank you so much for supporting our resident artist program.
UWW Little Buddy Program- 2nd Grade
The UW Whitewater King Chavez Scholars Program buddied up with our second grade students in December. Students from UW Whitewater paired up with Lincoln students for a day of education activities, leadership training, lunch and fun!
The King Chavez Scholars program is designed to attract and retain undergraduate scholars. Students come from diverse backgrounds and engage in high impact educational practices and experiences that will prepare them to be leaders that inspire, engage and transform the UWW campus community and beyond. This program also reflects the UWW commitment to uphold the ideals and expectations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez.
4th and 5th Grade STEM Project
Students in 4th and 5th grade were able to learn about Whitewater history, values and construction as they participated in their gingerbread construction project. Groups of students were able to learn about an important building in Whitewater and then redesign it with their partners. This was a great project for students to learn teamwork, math, social studies, science and use their creativeness!
Battle of the Books (BOB) is going strong at Lincoln
BOB is a reading program that encourages students to read and then compete in a trivia style game show. Students have been working with their teammates over the last month to start reading the 20 books from the state list. The program's goal is to encourage students' love of reading while developing friendships with their teammates.
Each week the teams meet with their advisor, Mrs. Retzke, our District Library Media Specialist, to practice taking notes, reading together and practicing questions for the final battle that will take place on Feb. 12th. "I love the teamwork that takes place during their discussions to come up with the best answers. This program also encourages all of us to read books we normally wouldn't, expanding all of our knowledge!"
4K and K learn about the letter "G"
G is for good guy Mr. Gefvert and GOATS! EC, 4K, and Kindergarten were all treated to some super fun hands-on learning as we studied the letter G. Mr. Gefvert was kind enough to introduce us all to KK and MeMe - two of his thirty one goats he and his family raise and show over the course of the year. A huge THANK YOU to Mr. Gefvert and his family for sharing these adorable little ladies with all of us!
7 Mindsets
The 100% Accountable Mindset teaches the importance of being responsible for our own happiness and success. Being 100% Accountable means deciding not to be victims of the past and recognizing that the future is not predetermined, so our lives are what we choose in the present moment and each moment moving forward.
News from the School Nurse
Winter Weather Reminder
Each winter, families, students, and community members inquire how the decision to close or delay school is made and communicated. Closing or delaying school is difficult for our families; we will utilize this option only when necessary for safety.
When we determine whether to close or delay school, we work collaboratively with the National Weather Service, Nelson’s Bus Company, local township snowplow drivers, and other area school districts. We make the call as early as we can, if possible, the night before a closure. If conditions are unclear until the day of the weather event, the process begins at approximately 3:00 a.m. This is done to better assess the road conditions of the district as a whole and account for in-city and rural routes. Remember that WUSD is just over 200 square miles.
The National Weather Service has moved away from utilizing “wind chill” in its forecast and will now utilize the following terms: extreme cold watch, extreme cold warning, and cold weather advisory. A sustained “extreme cold watch” will be an indicator of schools closing, as that indicates sustained temperatures of -30F.
School closures will be broadcast on television, radio stations, our website, and our Facebook page. We will call, email, and text a message to staff and families. If school is delayed due to inclement weather, morning 4K sessions are canceled. We suggest “liking” our FaceBook page for updates on closures: WWUSD Facebook
In addition to delaying or canceling school, there may be instances where we believe it is in the best interest of the safety of children to have an early release from school or to cancel after-school activities. When either of these situations occurs, the after-school Parks and Recreation childcare programming at our elementary schools is also canceled.
