UWW Little Buddy Program- 2nd Grade UWW Little Buddy Program- 2nd Grade

The UW Whitewater King Chavez Scholars Program buddied up with our second grade students in December. Students from UW Whitewater paired up with Lincoln students for a day of education activities, leadership training, lunch and fun!

The King Chavez Scholars program is designed to attract and retain undergraduate scholars. Students come from diverse backgrounds and engage in high impact educational practices and experiences that will prepare them to be leaders that inspire, engage and transform the UWW campus community and beyond. This program also reflects the UWW commitment to uphold the ideals and expectations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez.

4th and 5th Grade STEM Project 4th and 5th Grade STEM Project

Students in 4th and 5th grade were able to learn about Whitewater history, values and construction as they participated in their gingerbread construction project. Groups of students were able to learn about an important building in Whitewater and then redesign it with their partners. This was a great project for students to learn teamwork, math, social studies, science and use their creativeness!

Battle of the Books (BOB) is going strong at Lincoln Battle of the Books (BOB) is going strong at Lincoln

BOB is a reading program that encourages students to read and then compete in a trivia style game show. Students have been working with their teammates over the last month to start reading the 20 books from the state list. The program's goal is to encourage students' love of reading while developing friendships with their teammates.

Each week the teams meet with their advisor, Mrs. Retzke, our District Library Media Specialist, to practice taking notes, reading together and practicing questions for the final battle that will take place on Feb. 12th. "I love the teamwork that takes place during their discussions to come up with the best answers. This program also encourages all of us to read books we normally wouldn't, expanding all of our knowledge!"

G is for good guy Mr. Gefvert and GOATS! EC, 4K, and Kindergarten were all treated to some super fun hands-on learning as we studied the letter G. Mr. Gefvert was kind enough to introduce us all to KK and MeMe - two of his thirty one goats he and his family raise and show over the course of the year. A huge THANK YOU to Mr. Gefvert and his family for sharing these adorable little ladies with all of us!

News from the School Nurse News from the School Nurse

Winter Weather Reminder Winter Weather Reminder

Each winter, families, students, and community members inquire how the decision to close or delay school is made and communicated. Closing or delaying school is difficult for our families; we will utilize this option only when necessary for safety.

When we determine whether to close or delay school, we work collaboratively with the National Weather Service, Nelson’s Bus Company, local township snowplow drivers, and other area school districts. We make the call as early as we can, if possible, the night before a closure. If conditions are unclear until the day of the weather event, the process begins at approximately 3:00 a.m. This is done to better assess the road conditions of the district as a whole and account for in-city and rural routes. Remember that WUSD is just over 200 square miles.

The National Weather Service has moved away from utilizing “wind chill” in its forecast and will now utilize the following terms: extreme cold watch, extreme cold warning, and cold weather advisory. A sustained “extreme cold watch” will be an indicator of schools closing, as that indicates sustained temperatures of -30F.

School closures will be broadcast on television, radio stations, our website, and our Facebook page. We will call, email, and text a message to staff and families. If school is delayed due to inclement weather, morning 4K sessions are canceled. We suggest “liking” our FaceBook page for updates on closures: WWUSD Facebook

In addition to delaying or canceling school, there may be instances where we believe it is in the best interest of the safety of children to have an early release from school or to cancel after-school activities. When either of these situations occurs, the after-school Parks and Recreation childcare programming at our elementary schools is also canceled.
