Introduction

When you go online, or onto the internet, you can learn a lot! You can play fun games, sometimes with real people. You also have to be careful... because a screen can make you feel safe, like you are hidden, but it is actually a window on the entire world. Just like you need to be safe in a public park, you need to use a lot of the same thinking on a computer.

CitiZen

A person who is part of a community with rules. Everyone agrees to these rules because they make us feel kind and safe.

Just because you are on a computer doesn't mean you're alone. The people you are typing or talking to are real people. We use manners on the computer and work to make our community a kind and safe place.

Public vs Private

Profiles or accounts can be set in different ways to keep strangers from seeing your information. Sharing some information with everyone (public) is okay, but other information needs to stay with only people you know (private).

  • Your address
  • Your phone number
  • A friend's address or phone
  • Where you go to school

We are learning to be safe on the internet with polite comments, private information and TELLING adults about problems.

Digital Citizens

Act kind online. If someone is mean, TELL because bullies can be tracked.

Computer Communities

Understand that not everything they see on a computer is true. They TELL if they see something that worries them.

Online Kids

Keep their private information safe with strong passwords. They do not give strangers important personal information or pictures without permission.

2nd and 3rd Grade Safety Online Understandings

Understanding 1: It's Okay to Talk to Strangers With These Rules.

The internet is a place you can chat to real people. All the same rules you use for talking to strangers on the street are the same.
  • Check first with a grown up.
  • Be polite.
  • Keep personal information private. Only use first names or nicknames. If someone is asking you for this information, do NOT give it out. It's okay to tell a trusted grownup!

Understanding 2: The Internet Isn't Always Safe or Good

You can't always believe everything you read on the internet. It's easy to fake things, even photographs. It's easy for people to sound smart when they are lying. Sometimes they are trying to sell you things. You HAVE to think for yourself... Does what you are seeing make sense? There are a lot of things that are rude, really scary, or inappropriate. If you see something surprising or confusing, it's okay to tell! Use trusted websites like KidRex.org instead of Google whenever you can. Protect your passwords and do not share them so that people cannot hack your accounts and see your private messages.

Understanding 3: Cyberbullies are NOT Okay

You can be tracked. It might seem like you are in a secret world when you have a nickname in a game or on a chat room, but you are not. You need to act just the way you would in real life with all the same friendship rules. Don't be mean online. Don't spread lies about people. If someone is doing that to you, it's okay to tell! When people act horrible online it is called cyberbullying and it is NOT okay. If we wouldn't say it to someone's face, then we don't type it online!
