A Healthy Start to the 2026 – 2027 School Year!
Notes from the Nurse’s Office Welcome back, Southern Middle School Families! I am Nurse Porter, your SMS School Nurse, and I am so excited to welcome our returning and new students to the 2026–2027 school year. As your School Nurse, my top priority is keeping our students healthy, safe, and ready to learn.
A Quick Request: Update Your Contact Info Before the year gets fully underway, please take a moment to ensure your contact information is up to date in the Home Access Center (HAC). Having accurate phone numbers is essential so I can reach you quickly if your child becomes ill, is injured, or needs assistance during the school day.
Reminder to 7th Grade Parents/Guardians If you received an email, phone call, or letter in the mail from Nurse Porter between August 14 and August 21, 2026, your student is still in need of required immunizations to begin the 2026–2027 school year.
Students who are missing the required immunizations may not start school on August 25, 2026, unless the school has received an updated immunization record from you or your student’s physician showing proof of the required Tdap and MCV4 (meningococcal) vaccines.
If your student still needs these immunizations, the Calvert County Health Department has appointments available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. An appointment is required. Calvert County Health Department: 410-535-5400, ext. 334
Please provide an updated immunization record to the school nurse as soon as possible after your student receives the required vaccines.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this important health and school-entry requirement!
Medication Policy Reminders As we gear up for a fantastic year ahead, I also want to review our school's medication policy. Keeping our school safe is a team effort, and adhering to these guidelines ensures that every student’s health needs are handled with the utmost care.
If your child requires medication during school hours, please carefully review the following requirements:
· Nurse Administration Only: For the safety of all students, all medications must be administered safely in the Health Room by the school nurse. Students are not permitted to carry or self-administer medication at school.
· Doctor’s Order & Authorization: A completed “School Medication Administration Authorization Form” must be on file before any medication (this includes both prescription and over-the-counter medications) can be dispensed.
· Where to Find the Form: You can easily access and download the authorization form on the official CCPS website.
· Original Containers: All medications must be supplied in their original, clearly labeled packaging or pharmacy bottle. We cannot accept pills in baggies or unmarked containers.
· Parent/Guardian Drop-off: Medications must be brought directly to the school by a parent or guardian. Please do not send medications to school in your child’s backpack or lunchbox.
Your partnership is vital to maintaining a healthy environment for all of our students. If you have any questions regarding Health Room policies, your child's specific medical needs, or the required forms, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Wishing all of our Southern Middle School families a safe, healthy, and fantastic school year!
Warmly,
Vision and Hearing Screening
Dear SMS Parents/Guardians:
This letter is to notify you that all 8th grade students and 6th & 7th grade students new to Calvert County Public Schools will be participating in the annual vision and hearing screening conducted at their school by the Calvert County Health Department. This is only a screening. All students are required to be screened unless they have been evaluated by an optometrist/ophthalmologist within the past year.

Listed below are the screening dates for your school. Students with glasses will need to bring them to school for the screening. Please note that the dates are subject to change.
