Student Safety Reminder
This week, a student in a nearby Massachusetts community was struck by a bus. Thankfully, the student was not seriously injured. However, this incident serves as an important reminder for all of us about the need to remain vigilant during arrival and dismissal—especially given the constraints of our ongoing school construction.
Please take a moment to review these important reminders with your child:
-
Use sidewalks and crosswalks: Encourage your child to stay on sidewalks and use designated crosswalks both on and off school property.
Bus stop safety:Remind your child to wait at least six feet back from the curb while waiting for the bus and to avoid running or playing near the road. Students should wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the driver signals that it is safe before approaching. When crossing the street, children should always look both ways and make eye contact with the driver before stepping into the road.
-
School Playground access: Our playground is located within the bus circle. For safety reasons, the playground is closed 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after school. Please do not wait with younger children or allow students to play there during these times, as buses and vans are actively moving through the area.
Whether your child takes the bus, walks, or is dropped off, all young children benefit from regular reminders about safety. Thank you for helping us keep every student safe.
Bus Evacuation Drills
As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, we will be conducting a bus evacuation drill on Friday, November 14. This is a required annual safety practice that helps ensure students and staff know what to do in the event of an emergency while riding the bus.
During the drill, students will review safety procedures with the bus driver and practice safely exiting the bus. The drill will take place under staff supervision and will only take a few minutes.
We appreciate your support as we work together to keep all students safe on and around our school buses.
Thank You, Veterans!
We were honored to thank our veterans this morning during our Veterans Day Gratitude Parade. Our K-3 students had the opportunity to share cards and pictures with our guests and our Grade 3 Chorus sang two songs. Special thanks to our Green Meadow PTO for organizing the event and providing coffee and pastries.
Preschool Construction Visit
Our preschoolers have been learning about community helpers and this week they had the opportunity to meet Gabriel Suriel, the construction liaison for the Green Meadow Building Project management team. The children asked great questions about his work and the work on the new school building.
We are grateful to have such a great partnership with our team!
A Message from the School Nurse
Strep Throat- What Families Should Know
What is Strep Throat?
Strep throat is a common infection caused by bacteria. It spreads easily when someone coughs, sneezes, or shares cups and utensils.
Signs to Watch For:
Sore throat that starts suddenly
Pain when swallowing
Red or swollen tonsils (sometimes with white spots)
Fever
Headache or stomachache
Swollen glands in the neck
Nausea or vomiting (more common in younger kids)
What To Do If Your Child Has These Symptoms:If your child has a sore throat with a fever or several of the symptoms above, please check in with your healthcare provider.
If the doctor confirms strep throat, your child should start antibiotics right away.
Children should stay home from school until they’ve been on antibiotics for at least 24 hours and are fever-free without medicine.
Helping Prevent the Spread:
Encourage good handwashing with soap and water.
Teach kids to cover coughs and sneezes.
Remind them not to share drinks, utensils, or food with friends.
Thank you for helping us keep our school a healthy place for all students! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nurse Ria with any questions or concerns at 978-897-8142.
Winter is on the Way!
The temperatures are dropping and winter is on the way. We are committed to getting students outside for recess throughout the winter with the exception of extreme cold temperatures. The change of scenery, fresh air, and physical play all support a successful day of learning.
As the weather shifts, you will be asked to send your child to school with the following items:
- winter coat
- gloves or mittens
- a hat
- snow boots
- snow pants
Items should be labeled with your child's name. If you have items your child has grown out of that you would like to donate to the school or your child needs any of these items, please reach out to Ann Rutherford at arutherford@maynard.k12.ma.us or Maria Bourgeois at mbourgeois@maynard.k12.ma.us. If you need support accessing these items both Ann and Maria can help connect you with resources.
Grade 2 Hour of Code Week
The “Hour of Code” event takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. It is held annually, typically in December, in recognition of the birthday (December 9, 1906) of Computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper. This year it will take place at GMS on December 15-19th. The program was designed to celebrate coding and raise awareness. It was intended to be a quick way to show that anybody can learn the basics of coding and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. Today it’s become a global movement, participating in 180 countries and 45 languages.
Green Meadow Grade 2 Parents and Caregivers are invited to attend a Computer Science class with their student. A Google form sign-up will be available to families through email after the Thanksgiving break.
The following is a schedule for Grade 2 classes:
Monday, Dec 15th Mrs. Jones (9:15-10:00)
Tuesday, Dec 16th Ms. LeBlanc (9:15-10:00)
Wednesday, Dec 17th Sra. Flores (9:15-10:00)
Thursday, Dec 18th Mrs. Holly (9:15-10:00)
Friday, Dec 19th Ms. Norcross (9:15-10:00)

Green Meadow Playground Reminder
Please remember that our school playground must remain closed during arrival and dismissal times each day to ensure student safety.
We have four buses and four vans that need to safely enter and exit the bus circle. When families use the playground during these times, other students often run over to join them, sometimes into the path of buses or vans. During dismissal, our staff’s full attention is on making sure all students are safely dismissed, so we ask that parents and guardians closely supervise children who have already been dismissed.
If you would like to enjoy some outdoor play after school, the Fowler School playground is available for families to use.
Thank you for helping us keep all students safe!
Green Meadow School Building Project Update
We are excited to share that the project has reached approximately 23% completion as of October 2025! If you’ve driven by the site recently, you’ve likely noticed the installation of the exterior brick taking shape. Work on the retaining wall and drainage systems continues to progress steadily.
Inside the building, roof insulation has begun, and cement flooring has been poured in sections of the first floor. Steel framing is underway on both the first and second floors.
The project remains on schedule, and we are eagerly anticipating the grand opening in December 2026!
We are Hiring!
The Maynard Public Schools anticipates hiring Daily Substitutes for the 2025-2026 school year. This role provides flexibility. Daily Substitutes can determine which days, which grade-levels, and which of the three schools they would like to work in. For more information, please email Kate Murray, kmurray@maynard.k12.ma.us, or Colleen Andrade, candrade@maynard.k12.ma.us.
