September 2023

Happy Tuesday Coaches!

Welcome back to school! We hope that your year has gotten off to a strong and wonderful start- the beginning of the year can often be stressful as we, our teachers, and our students get back into the swing of things.

This year we hope to start with a kick-off meeting on September 27 to plan out the purpose and direction of our huddles, choose a book for the book study with Michelle Harris (from Jim Knights Instructional Coaching Group), and set group norms. We would love your input and thoughts on how this year should look for our group.

We've included the schedule of Huddles below along with a return (this time two full days) of the Coaches Conference with Michelle Harris so you can save the date!

Warmest Regards,

Ayla, Beth, & Jennifer

Visible Learning is the name of the research from John Hattie. Hattie synthesized over 132,00 studies involving over 300 million children. He looked at the effects of over 320 factors (in 9 categories) on student learning. There are many factors that teachers and coaches cannot control; but there are several that we can focus on that will greatly improve the speed and quality of student learning. See which strategies you should add to your playbook. Check out his research here or get his book here.

The Advice Trap- Michael Bungay

From the website: The Advice Trap is about getting to grips with how to actually change your behavior so you stay curious a little bit longer. You have to tame your Advice Monster, that part of you that jumps in to offer up ideas, opinions, suggestions and advice.

Drive- Daniel Pink

From the website: Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That’s a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink. In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.
