Calling all Middle School Science Teachers
Did you know that the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) has created a new way for middle school students to learn physics through hands-on experiential play? Playground Physics is a middle school science program that uses physical play and virtual activities to engage students in scientific inquiry. Previous research shows that the program improves understanding of middle school physics concepts!
NYSCI is collaborating with NYSCATE to recruit teachers to join the Playground Physics project. Participants will receive the following at no cost:
- The award-winning Playground Physics app, designed to make physics concepts visible
- Teacher’s Guide aligned with the New York State Science Learning Standards for middle school
- Professional development, including a hands-on experiential workshop for teachers (six hour equivalency) and virtual coaching provided by NYSCATE.
All science teachers and STEM teachers from middle schools serving a high-need population are eligible.
To learn more about this project, please visit http://www.playgroundphysics.org. You may contact playgroundphysics@nyscate.org to schedule an informational webinar.
About this Project:
Playground Physics, created by the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), is a supplemental middle school science program that engages students in scientific inquiry through play and virtual activities. NYSCI and NYSCATE are scaling up the program to middle schools across the state that serve high-need populations (greater than 40 percent of students from low-income families or from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields). Participation of schools in the program is funded by the Education Innovation and Research grant program of the Department of Education. American Institutes for Research is conducting a study of the benefits of the program for student learning of middle school physical science.
