Our Learning Community...
We have reached the final stretch of the 2025–2026 school year and what an eventful and exciting week ahead! With just three school days remaining, we are looking forward to celebrating learning, reflecting on growth, and making special memories together before summer begins.
A few important reminders for the week ahead:
- There is no school on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. We hope your family enjoys a safe and restful three-day weekend.
- The last day of school is Thursday and will be a minimum day dismissal for TK-5th grade. Please plan accordingly for pick-up.
- Attendance still matters! We want to see students here, on time, and ready to learn every day through the final bell. These last few days are filled with important classroom activities, celebrations, and opportunities for closure.
- Lots of student work and classroom materials will be coming home this week. Please make sure your child comes to school each day with their backpack so they can safely bring home their portfolios, supplies, and additional work from the year.
- Yearbooks have arrived! Students who ordered a yearbook will receive them on the last day of school.
- There are many more updates and photos in this Dolphin Update so make sure you scroll all the way to the end!
Thank you for your partnership throughout this school year. We are so proud of all our students have accomplished and look forward to finishing the year strong together!
No Place for Hate
We are proud to share that Jones Elementary continues to be recognized as an Anti-Defamation League (ADL) No Place for Hate school. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to building a school community where every student feels safe, valued, included, and respected.
The No Place for Hate program, developed by the ADL, provides schools with tools and learning experiences that help students understand the importance of kindness, inclusion, empathy, and standing up against bias and bullying. Throughout the year, our students and staff participate in activities and conversations designed to strengthen belonging, celebrate differences, and build a positive school culture rooted in respect.
This recognition comes at an especially sensitive and heartbreaking time for our San Diego community. Last week, our neighbors at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont experienced a horrific act of violence. Our hearts remian with the victims, families, and all those impacted by this tragedy. In moments like these, the work of teaching empathy, understanding, and respect for people of all backgrounds becomes even more important.
The social emotional work we do as a school plays an important role in helping students learn not only academic skills, but also how to be compassionate, courageous, and caring members of a diverse community. Being recognized as a No Place for Hate school is not a finish line, it is a commitment we continue to make every day.
District Advisory Council (DAC)
The District Advisory Council (DAC) is a committee made up of parents, staff, and community representatives who work together to provide input and recommendations on district programs, services, and student achievement. DAC meetings are an opportunity to learn more about district initiatives, ask questions, and stay informed about topics impacting our schools and students.
At the most recent DAC meeting, the following presentations were shared with attendees:
We encourage families to review these presentations and stay engaged with the important work happening across the district.
A Note From Mrs. Dungo...
Dear Jones Families,
I hope you and your family are doing well. I can’t believe summer vacation is just around the corner.
I wanted to share that I will be leaving Jones Elementary to begin a new position at another school site closer to my home. Jones Elementary has been a special place to me for the past 15 years, and I am truly grateful for all the memories, experiences, and relationships I have shared with students, families, and staff members.
It has been a privilege to be part of your children’s educational journey and to be part of this wonderful school community. Your support and kindness have meant so much to me. Jones will always hold a special place in my heart.
With gratitude,
Mrs. Dungo
Counseling Corner...
Hello Families!
Building on our work from earlier this school year, where students practiced calming down those big feelings to keep their brains in the thinking zone, we have recently leveled up! In our social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons, students are building their problem-solving skills. When conflicts arise (as they naturally do), it can be challenging to know what to do next. To help, we have introduced a simple but powerful tool that students can use anywhere…at school, on the playground, or even at the dinner table.
Students learned the acronym STEP and are using it as a roadmap that guides them from a problem to a solution. The first step is S: Say the Problem. We practiced naming the issue using neutral language. The goal is to avoid blaming words like “always”, “never”, or “because of you”. Instead of "You always hog the toys," we try, "I want to play with the toys, but they are being used right now." The second step is T: Think of Solutions. Brainstorming various ways to solve the problem that are safe, fair, and respectful. The third step is E: Explore Consequences. It just means what would happen if we tried that solution, and the consequences can be either negative or positive. Understanding the consequences for each solution helps us with our last step P: Pick the Best Solution. Choosing the path that works best for everyone involved.
The next time your child encounters a small issue at home, try asking them: "Can you use your problem-solving STEP skills to walk me through this?" Using this consistent language between school and home helps reinforce these life skills for our little learners. We are so proud of the empathy our students are showing as they learn to navigate their peer relationships :)
With Gratitude,
Mrs. Rebelo-Vu
Lost & Found
Will be in Front of the School This Week
Highlights From Last Week...
Our classrooms are alive with learning! Mrs. Deaton our QUEST resource teacher was on campus supporting STEAM and SEL in the classrooms!
Kindergarten students engaged in a STEAM activity inspired by Jackson Pollock.
They created art work using forces & motion (push/pull/gravity).
In TK students created a Dance Party! They combined math fluency with coding to make dance moves!
In room 9 students went on a geometric adventure!
Students used their knowledge about different shapes to code the Ozobots to draw them.
Room 11 has been growing their skills at computer programing by block coding with Minecraft Adventurer.
They are learning to think like programmers by diving into the world of computer science.
One block at a time, students are learning that coding is all about creativity, perseverance, and problem-solving!
Room 2, Room 3, and B14 explored with Microbits; small, programmable computers designed to help students learn coding, computational thinking, and engineering in a hands-on way.
Sensors on the Microbits can measure temperature, motion, light, or acceleration, helping students collect real-world data for experiments.
Microbits allow students the opportunity to immediately test, troubleshoot, and improve what they create.
Students in B13 and B12 were introduced to drone technology, exploring the equipment and learning how innovation, teamwork, and creativity come together in exciting new ways.
They practiced how to program and sequence the drones.
Then students worked together to code a synchronized drone show, building skills in technology, communication, and perseverance along the way!
The SDUSD Stars in Education event honored exceptional Teachers of the Year, Classified Employees of the Year, and Volunteers of the Year from across the district.
Renee Leckner and Maria Hooper were recognized for the care, dedication, and heart they bring to our Jones community each and every day.
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition! Thank you for the countless ways you make Jones such a special place to learn and grow!
On Thursday, the Jones Elementary PTA partnered with SANDAG to celebrate Bike to Everywhere Day. Jones was one of 100 pit stops for riders that morning!
From bikes and scooters to helmets and healthy habits, our students showed that getting to school can be fun, active, and community-centered.
Big energy, fresh air, and lots of wheels! Thank you to all who joined the ride!
Thursday we celebrated our Transitional Kindergarten students as they prepared for their next adventure in Kindergarten.
Our TK students have grown so much this year, learning routines, building friendships, exploring new ideas, and becoming confident learners.
Congratulations to our amazing students on their promotion!
A magical way to celebrate an incredible year at the Jones Jamboree!
Students gathered for a special performance by Dana Law the Magician, sponsored by our amazing PTA to honor a full year of learning and growth.
Thank you, PTA, for helping us create joyful memories for our students!

Summer
Did you know that just 15 minutes of reading each day can make a world of difference in your child’s learning journey? Whether you are reading to your child, reading together, or listening to them read aloud, it all counts and it all matters!
Reading at home builds more than just literacy skills. It strengthens vocabulary, improves comprehension, and develops a lifelong love of learning. In fact, children who are read to daily are exposed to 1.4 million more words by the time they start school than children who are not. That kind of language exposure lays a strong foundation for both academic success and confident communication.
Just as importantly, books also help children grow socially by allowing them to step into other people’s experiences, see the world from different perspectives and practice empathy and kindness. Stories have the power to spark cultural awareness, build understanding and nurture the skills that help our students become not only successful learners, but also compassionate human beings.
Here are a few ways to make reading a special part of your routine:
-
Choose a cozy time and space to read together
-
Let your child pick the book (even if it’s the same one again!)
-
Ask questions about the story to boost comprehension
-
Model a love for reading by enjoying your own book nearby
The best part, your family has access to an endless amount of books through the internet and the Public Library. Looking for something new to read? Check out the links below for inspiration...
