Our online ELT registration is now closed, thank you to everyone who signed up! If you haven't registered, don't worry, there is still time, see below for details. We are currently programming all courses and will send families a message via Operoo tomorrow that will inform you of what ELTs your student has been assigned to. ELTs will begin on this week Thursday, October 9 (there will be no Wednesday classes this week due to 50 Fest).

Please note, there are several classes which had very high registrations including Design your Drip, Cook Book, and Video Game Club. We were unable to accommodate everyone who had requested these classes in their first choice and students may receive a backup selection. Additionally, Art Portfolio Prep on Tuesdays had high enrollment and we were unable to include 6th graders in order to prioritize students who are preparing their high school portfolios.

To sign up or change courses: If you haven’t signed up yet or would like to change courses, all additions or changes must be done in-person. Students should see Mr. Honoroff, Ms. Gunn, or Mr. Warren during lunch or after school to sign up for their preferred courses. Some ELTs are now closed, to see a list of currently available classes, check ms50.org/elt.

6th Grade

In 6th Grade, students have been diving into important concepts about numbers, factors, multiples, and expressions. They’ve learned how to identify common factors and the greatest common factor (GCF) of two numbers, as well as how to find and explain the least common multiple (LCM). These skills help them solve real-world problems involving factors and multiples. They’re learning how to compare and create expressions using exponents. Finally, students are developing a deeper understanding of the order of operations. They can now explain why a standard order is necessary and use it to accurately evaluate complex numerical expressions involving multiple operations, grouping symbols, and exponents.

7th Grade

In 7th Grade students are learning to understand and use the terms “scaled copy,” “to scale,” “scale factor,” “scale drawing,” and “scale,” and recognize when two pictures or plane figures are or are not scaled copies of each other. They use tables to reason about measurements in scaled copies, and recognize that angle measures are preserved in scaled copies, but lengths are scaled by a scale factor and areas by the square of the scale factor. They make, interpret, and reason about scale drawings. These include maps and floor plans that have scales with and without units.

8th Grade

In 8th grade Algebra, students will explore how relationships between variables can be represented using equations, tables, and graphs. They’ll learn to identify, evaluate, and graph functions, understanding the difference between linear and nonlinear functions. Key concepts include domain and range, function notation, and interpreting real-world scenarios through function models. By the end of the unit, students will be able to determine if a relationship is a function and analyze how changes in one variable affect another. This foundational knowledge prepares them for deeper mathematical problem-solving and real-life applications in science, economics, and technology.
