Hello Compass Families!
Wow, the time has flown by! Today marks the end of the 1st quarter, and it is incredible to reflect on all that has taken place at Compass. From the amount of learning and engagement happening in classrooms to students sharing their goals, diving into proficiency scales, and celebrating their progress, there has been so much to be excited about throughout the building. We have also had plenty of fun along the way!
We are excited to continue building on all the amazing things happening at Compass as we move forward into the 2nd quarter. In a couple of weeks, we look forward to connecting with families during parent-teacher conferences to discuss your student's progress, celebrate successes, and continue working together to support their growth.
Thank you for your continued partnership between home and school. We truly could not do the work we do each day without your support, and we appreciate the role you play in your child's learning and success. We look forward to another great quarter!
Go Pirates!

Orange Crush celebrates Pirates who are “CRUSHING IT” in the ways they support our students, staff, schools and community. From creating meaningful experiences and welcoming environments to showing exceptional care and making a positive impact, Orange Crush gives us a chance to shine a light on the people behind the everyday moments that matter.
All employee groups are eligible to be nominated throughout the school year. An Update to Standards-Based Scoring on your Student's Report Card
This school year, we are updating our elementary standards-based scoring guide from a 1-4 scale to five categories: Not Yet (NY), Developing (D), Approaching (A), Proficient (P) and Exceeding (E). These categories provide a clearer picture of where students are in their learning and what they need to continue growing.
A student’s proficiency level is based on evidence gathered through multiple assessments and learning experiences over time, not simply an accumulation of points or assignment grades. Teachers consider the most consistent and recent evidence to determine a student’s current understanding and ability to demonstrate grade-level standards.
Our goal is to provide families with meaningful information about student progress, celebrate growth, and help every learner continue moving forward.
Visit our Grading Practices - Elementary page for parent guides for each grade-level report card as well as answers to other frequently asked grading questions.
MPA Yuletide Market - Nov. 7

Birthday Treats
Celebrations and Birthdays We believe it is important for the school to recognize our students on their birthday and other special days. However, for several reasons including increased food allergies, preservation of the instructional day, and student equality, students are not allowed to bring treats from home or have flowers/balloons or other items delivered to the classroom for birthdays, going-away parties, or other personal events. Each classroom teacher will recognize the student in a special way to celebrate his or her birthday. If a student receives a delivery at school, the student will be notified to come to the office to view the item. Parents will be responsible for transporting the item home. Birthday party invitations may only be distributed if invitations are given to every student in the class.

Parents as Teachers
The Platte County R-3 School District Parents as Teachers program is a free and voluntary program designed to help District families with children prenatal to school age through monthly home visits. The parent educators provide caregivers the knowledge and skills to empower them as their child's first and most influential teacher. Through this program you can learn more about parenting and child development, learn ways to cope with challenges of family life, identify any potential delays in your child's development, and join fun group connections to meet other families in the Parents as Teachers program.
For more information and to enroll please visit our Parents as Teachers webpage.
Pirates ROCK and Portrait of a Graduate
Since 2005, Pirates ROCK (Raising Outstanding Character Kids) has helped shape a strong culture of character across Platte County School District. More than 20 years later and beginning with the 2026-27 school year, we're building on that tradition by aligning Pirates ROCK with our Portrait of a Graduate essential skills.
This evolution creates a more consistent, student-centered approach to character development by focusing on the six essential skills that prepare learners to thrive in school, careers, and life. Students will continue to be recognized for demonstrating outstanding character while developing the competencies that support our mission of ensuring every learner thrives in an ever-changing world with confidence and resilience, all through a consistent framework and shared language as they grow from kindergarten through graduation.
Throughout the year, we'll focus on these essential skills:
- October/November: Self-Awareness
- December/January: Personal Connections
- February: Personal Growth
- March: Problem-Solving
- April: Global Connections
