Our Native American Programs is proud that we annually provide our elementary & middle school teachers with Native American culture and language books and reading materials to place in their classroom libraries.

The CPS Native American Programs and the district libraries have a great working relationship! Each site library has a section dedicated to Native American culture and language. Additionally, cultural materials and resources are purchased and placed in each library to give students access to activities. A big thank you (wado) goes out to Mrs. Beth Spivey, our district librarian, for partnering with the Native American Programs to serve our Native students!

Cherokee Club Cherokee Club

Cherokee Club is in Full Swing!

We are so happy to be back doing Cherokee Club in the after school program. We are meeting on Wednesdays and prepping for the Cherokee Challenge Bowl. This competition is one of our favorites; students prepare to answer questions about Cherokee culture, history, people, locations, and much more. We are always welcoming new members so any student is welcome to stay and participate in club. Students that hold a CDIB card are able to participate in the competitions if attendance to club to regular and they are willing to practice materials outside of the club schedule.

Native American Studies

Native American Studies students recently finished their first unit over "The Beginning of Time", and have recently been learning about "Early Cherokee Culture."

Students are learning about the 7 Cherokee Clans and are currently working on group poster projects. After group projects are complete, we will continue our unit of "Early Cherokee Culture" and continue learning about the traditional Cherokee ways.

Cherokee Language students can confidently recognize 16 Cherokee Syllabary symbols. Students have been working extremely hard to be able to memorize, read, and write Cherokee Syllabary.

Students have been learning basic phrases and words. We will soon be covering greetings and simple conversational phrases in our upcoming unit.
