🎃HALLOWEEN
Equitable and Inclusive Education Best Practices
As Halloween approaches, we’re excited to see the creativity, fun, and spirit that this season brings! It’s a time for imagination, laughter, and community — and we believe Halloween should be a safe and joyful experience for all students.
To ensure that everyone feels welcome and respected during Halloween celebrations, we ask for your support in choosing costumes that are inclusive, equitable, and culturally sensitive.
✅ Here are a few guiding principles to keep Halloween fun and respectful for everyone:
- Avoid costumes that appropriate cultures or reinforce harmful stereotypes. Costumes that portray someone's race, ethnicity, religion, or lived experience as a costume can be deeply hurtful, even if the intent is playful.
- Steer clear of costumes that make light of serious issues such as poverty, trauma, or violence.
- Be mindful of accessibility. Consider whether costumes are safe and comfortable for all students, including those with sensory or mobility needs.
- Celebrate creativity without exclusion. Encourage your child to express themselves in ways that don’t rely on dressing “as” someone else's identity.
- Assessories that do not align with the Catholic Code of Conduct (i.e. weapons of any kind) can not be brought to school
👥 Talk With Your Child
This is a great opportunity to talk with your child about empathy, respect, and understanding others’ perspectives. A simple question like “How do you think someone might feel seeing that costume?” can lead to thoughtful conversations.
🎉 Let's Celebrate Together!
We’re looking forward to a festive and inclusive Halloween season filled with joy and community spirit. Thank you for helping us make sure all students feel seen, respected, and safe during our celebrations.
Halloween Candy🍬🍭
Safe Environments
As a reminder, sharing of food is not permitted at school. Please do not send edible class treats with your child to school. Thank you in advance!
🎶Mary Fix MONSTER MASH Halloween Dance👻🎃

Here’s what’s brewing:
- Each class will get their groove on during their scheduled dance time — costumes encouraged!
Let’s make this Halloween one to remember!
Thank you to our Catholic School Council members for organizing this fundraising event for our school!

TERRY FOX WALK AND ROLL
Terry Fox Walk & Roll Success!
A heartfelt thank you to our Mary Fix community for your incredible support of our Terry Fox Walk & Roll held on September 28. Together, our students, staff, and families raised an outstanding $767.45 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.
We are grateful for your generosity, enthusiasm, and commitment to carrying forward Terry's legacy of hope, courage, and determination. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps support important cancer research and makes a difference in the lives of so many.
Thank you for helping make this event such a meaningful success. We are proud of what we accomplished together as a school community! 🦅❤️💙🍁
SCHOOL UPDATES
Math Faciliator 📐
Our school has been assigned a math facilitator to support our Grades 2/3 and 5/6 classes. The role of the math facilitator is to support small group intervention and to work in collaboration with the classroom teacher on mathematics. The math facilitator will have a board-wide schedule and will visit Mary Fix CES each month.
SCHOOL PROCEDURES
Safe Arrivals -- Reporting Student Absences 📲 📞
There are 3 ways to report your child's absence, late arrival or early departure:
- Using the Safe Arrival App (download from Google or Apple Store)
- Using the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.ca/#/home .
- Calling the toll-free number 1.844.435.3440 to report an absence using the automated phone system.
The above 3 options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time.
NOTE: For absences greater than five consecutive days, please call your child’s school directly.
Remember to: Please report absences in advance using SafeArrival instead of sending notes or calling/emailing the school.
Entry and Dismissal Routines 👣 🚲 🚗
Students are welcome to enter the school at 8:45 to 9:00AM.
Supervision is not available outside during this time and should enter the school readily to prepare for their school day. Students who arrive after 9:00am are considered late. Anyone arriving after 9:05AM will be delayed and will need to wait outside at the front doors during our sacred portion of our morning exercises (Prayers, O'Canada and Land Acknowledgement). The front doors will re-open after the morning exercises for announcements. Thank you for your support of preserving the importance of our sacred time at our school.
Kiss 'n Ride 💋🚗
Thank you to all families for using the Kiss 'n Ride in an efficient safe manner to school.
Our school appreciates your cooperation in keeping our Kiss 'n Ride area safe and efficient for all families.
To help maintain this positive momentum and reduce congestion, we kindly ask that families comply with these important guidelines:
- 🚗 Stay in your vehicle: Please do not exit your car while in the Kiss 'n Ride lane. If you need to assist your child, please park legally on the street.
- 🧒 Quick drop-off: Ensure your child is ready to exit the vehicle promptly with their belongings.
- 🚦 Keep the flow moving: Once your child has safely exited, please continue driving to allow others to drop off.
- 🚷 No parking in the lane: If you need to walk your child to the door, please park in a legal spot on the street or park in the side parking lot; this includes kindergarten families.
- 🕒 Arrive on time: Arriving earlier than 9:00am can help avoid the morning rush.
Let’s continue working together to keep our school community safe and respectful for everyone. Thank you for your support!
School Visitors 📝
All visitors to the school are reminded that they must report to and sign in at the office when first arriving. Adults in the building who are not staff must wear identification stickers for safety reasons. To further ensure the safety of all students and to minimize the traffic in school hallways at arrival and dismissal times, we ask that parents meet their children outside of the school and away from immediate exit doors. Any student leaving the school during the day due to appointments, etc., must be signed out at the office.
Dogs on School Property 🐶🐕
Please be aware that dogs are not permitted on school property. If your dog is escorting you and your child(ren) to and from school, please make arrangements to meet your child(ren) at a safe location off of school property at the beginning and end of the day.
External Food Delivery Services 🚨
Outside Food Deliveries
We would like to inform families that outside food deliveries—such as Uber Eats, SkipTheDishes, DoorDash, or similar services—are not permitted at our school.
This practice has become increasingly common, and while we understand the convenience it offers, it raises significant safety concerns. For the security of all students and staff, we cannot open our doors to delivery drivers who are unknown to the school and cannot be verified. Limiting this access helps us maintain a safe and secure environment throughout the school day.
If your child forgets a lunch, you are welcome to bring it to the school lunch table. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us keep our building safe.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Agendas📅
2026-2027 School Agendas will be provided to students in grades K to 6.
Agendas will be a tool used for communication with staff/parents and assist students in building organizational skills.
Please utilize the agenda as this is an efficient tool for quick communication.
*Discussions of a sensitive nature should be exchanged via the phone.
Emergency Drills 🚨🆘
Throughout the year school personnel review safety procedures with the students on a number of topics. Emergency evacuation/fire drills are conducted to ensure that everyone is aware of the procedures to follow in order to exit the building safely. Our School Board has also established Hold and Secure and Lockdown procedures should a high-risk incident involving weapons occur on school property, that could endanger the lives and/or the safety of students and/or staff. We will continue to practice the Emergency Lockdown Procedures and Fire Evacuation procedures throughout the school year.
School Cash Online 💲💰
For safety and efficiency reasons, we would like to reduce the amount of cash & cheques coming into our school. Please join the thousands of parents who have already registered and are enjoying the convenience of paying ONLINE! It takes less than 5 minutes to register. Our goal is to reach 100% of our families using School Cash Online. We have found that School Cash Online dramatically increased the efficiency and security of money coming into the school, reducing much of the time required when dealing with money. If you need help with registering, please call our office and we would be happy to help you. We thank you for supporting School Cash Online.
Bicycles, Scooters, Rollerblades, E-Bikes, E-Scooters 🚲🛴
A safety reminder to all students that bikes and manual scooters are to be walked both on and off the school property. Bikes and scooters are to be locked on the bike racks outside as we do not have facilities to store or secure these items indoors. The school is not responsible for these items.
In the City of Mississauga, students must be 16 years or older to legally ride e-scooters and e-bikes. As such, e-scooters/e-bikes are not permitted on school property at any time.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
Pediculosis (Lice) Protocol
Head lice: What Parents Need to Know
Head lice (pediculosis) are common in schools and can affect anyone. They are not a health hazard and do not spread disease. However, they do require treatment to prevent spreading.
What you can do:
• Check your child’s hair regularly.
• Teach children not to share hats, combs, or hair accessories.
• If lice or nits are found, begin treatment promptly.
Students do not need to stay home beyond starting treatment.
Helpful Resources: • Caring for Kids – Head Lice: https://caringforkids.cps.ca/handouts/health-conditions-andtreatments/head_lice
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us manage this common issue.
PREVALENT MEDICAL CONDITIONS🔉
Medical Alerts 🚨
All students with a prevalent medical condition: (Asthma, Anaphylaxis, Diabetes and Epilepsy), must complete a plan of care with the assistance of a physician. A plan of care is only required to be completed one time and when there are updates to the student's plan; including medication changes and protocol.
Students with any medication stored at school either in student backpacks or in the health room must complete the Authorization for Storage and Administration of Medications Form (GF 035) annually and submit it to the school office. Please see the attachments below for both Storage of Medication and specific Plans of Care.
Storage of Medication 💊💉
For all students who have a Plan of Care, or for any parent/guardian who has completed the Authorization for Storage and Adminstration of Medication, we will be asking you to pick up your child's medication on the last day of school; June 30th, 2027. This includes Epi-Pens, puffers, inhalers, and any non-prescription medication.
Please note that a doctor's signature is only required on the Storage of Medication Form (GF035) if there has been a change to the medication.
Anaphylaxis 🛑
Life Threatening Allergies
We would like to remind families that Mary Fix Elementary, is an allergen aware school. There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and life-threatening allergies to certain foods, such as nuts and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life-threatening reactions. The safety and well-being of all of our students is a priority.
We respectfully request that student lunches or snacks DO NOT contain any nuts, tree nuts, including peanut butter and substitute products. As there are communal areas of the school, nuts and nut products can not be brought to school even if there are no specific nut allergies within your child's class. Please note that additional allergies such as shellfish may be applicable to your child's class. A letter will be sent home to inform parents regarding class needs.
- Please make sure that all of you children's caregivers are aware of the food restrictions.
- To support, allergen awareness, sharing of food for birthday or special occasions at school is not permitted (inedible alternative such as stickers and pencils are welcome).
Any additional allergy concerns within your child's classroom were shared by the classroom teacher in September however this may change as student needs arise.
We appreciate your cooperation in supporting a safe learning environment for all pupils.
Asthma Awareness🩺
We Share the Air Campaign
We would also like to remind families that SFA school continues to participate in "We Share the Air", a scent sensitivity awareness campaign. There are students in attendance who suffer from life-threatening asthmatic conditions to air pollutants. Exposure to even minimal odours may cause a potential life-threatening reaction.
Very common triggers are: perfume, cologne, scented products, personal care, such as hairspray. The safety of our students is priority. In order to ensure the safety and well-being of all students, we request that our school community refrain from wearing scented personal products as much as possible, at school and all school events. We appreciate your cooperation in supporting a safe learning environment for all students, staff and community members.

💡FALCON REMINDERS
School Footwear👟
Student safety is a priority at Mary Fix!
As per OPHEA Guidelines, students are required to wear running shoes during physical education classes, active outdoor play or participation in sports at recess. For safety reasons, students should not be barefoot, in sock feet or wearing Crocs/sandals/cleats to participate in sports or physical games/activities at recess. Cleats are not permitted at recess time. Crocs may be worn as indoor shoes but students must bring an alternative to participate in physical education or sports during the school day.
DPCDSB Dress Code 👚
School Board Policy P-2006
A dress code refers to the standard of student dress which is respectful of the dignity of the human person and inclusive. In lieu of a prescriptive list, schools are reminded to communicate guidelines that ensure students are dressed in a manner which ensures that the top of the shoulders to the mid-thigh are not exposed.
The DPCDSB dress code will exclude any garments with messages containing or portraying any offensive and/or inappropriate content. Members of the DPCDSB community will not be permitted to wear attire that promotes: a) hate, b) discrimination, c) illegal activity, d) profanity, e) violence, f) political language, g) threats to health and safety, h) or content that contravenes the Ontario Human Rights Code.
As outlined in DPCDSB's GAP2012 Catholic Code of Conduct, student compliance with the school’s dress code is mandatory.
Cell Phone Use 📴
PPM 128
In accordance with PPM 128, all students must keep their phones powered off or on silent mode and out of sight for the school day, unless otherwise allowed by the educator during instructional time for a
specific purpose. Students are not to have their phones outside during recess or in any space that is not directly supervised. Intermediate students will have a designated space for their phones in their classrooms throughout the school day.
If you need to get in touch with your child during the school day, please contact the main office. Any personal electronics brought to the school will be the responsibility of the students to maintain.
Please review these rules with your child. We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining a positive learning environment for all at Mary Fix CES.
Weather Conditions🌂💨🌞
Prepare for the unexpected! 🌂
To support student comfort throughout the school day and during outdoor recesses/play, students are encouraged to wear clothes based on the temperatures of the season. As per board protocols, students will spend time outdoors and should be dressed for hot or cooler temperatures.
Please ensure that all clothing is labelled and that students have brought in a change of indoor shoes for classroom use. Please note that in the event of an emergency/evacuation students will not have the opportunity to put boots on.

SAFEVOICE
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) is committed to the safety and well-being of all students. To support this, DPCDSB offers SafeVoice, a confidential Safe Schools Tool for students to share concerns about bullying, harassment, discrimination, or other issues.
Students can access SafeVoice from the DPCDSB homepage, the Student Portal, their school website, or directly at dpcdsb.org/SafeVoice. The form allows students to provide information about incidents they’ve experienced or witnessed, including details about who was involved and when and where it took place. Students may choose to remain anonymous or include their name and contact information if they wish to be contacted directly by a school administrator.
All submissions are reviewed by the school Principal and Vice-Principal, unless a concern involves a Principal or Vice-Principal, in which case it is directed to the Superintendent.
SafeVoice is one of the many ways DPCDSB works with students, staff, and families to foster safe, caring, inclusive, and faith-filled school communities.
If you need to share information about a crime, please contact Crime Stoppers, Peel Regional Police, or the Ontario Provincial Police.

UPDATES FROM OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS 🤝
Update From STOPR 🚍
School Bus Safety Week is taking place from October 19 to 23, 2026.
School Bus safety week is a national program intended to raise awareness about school bus safety and the important role we all play in making our students’ daily transportation to and from school a safe journey. Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to take special care and caution whenever you are approaching a school bus.
- Always watch out for children and never pass a school bus when it is stopped with its overhead flashing lights and stop arm activated, as students are being picked up or dropped off.
- We all play an important role in school bus safety and keeping children safe.
- If you have children that ride a school bus this would be an excellent opportunity to review with them all the important school bus safety tips & video’s located in the School Bus Safety section of our website www.stopr.ca.
Bussing Procedures and Eligibility Information 🚌
Opt-Out Requirement
During transportation planning, STOPR assigns students to school buses if they are eligible for transportation in accordance with the transportation distance policies. Eligible students who do not require transportation services must opt out. This includes any regular or special education students who attend an after-school program such as the YMCA, have a babysitter in the walking boundary, or students who are consistently driven to/from school by parents or relatives.
If your child is eligible, but does not require bus transportation, please email the infobox @ MAFIXInfo@dpcdsb.org to let us know by Friday, September 11th.
Eligibility
Busing eligibility may have changed for your child. The distances to determine eligibility are set out by the Peel DSB and Dufferin-Peel CDSB.
You can access information about bussing by entering your child’s OEN (available on the report card) on the STOPR Website. ( https://businfo.stopr.ca/Login?ReturnUrl=/Subscriptions/ChildTransportInfo ) beginning August 31, 2026.
Courtesy Seating
Unfortunately, we are unable to entertain any requests for courtesy seats on the bus until the end of October. If your child is not eligible to ride the bus in September, please make alternate arrangements. Any courtesy seats will be assigned by the end of October. Practice Good Habits this Pedestrian Safety Month
With students back in school and the time to turn our clocks back looming, now is the time to refresh our pedestrian safety habits. Celebrate Pedestrian Safety Month this October by sharing tips and tricks with parents and students to ensure a safe walk to and from school. Shorter daylight hours lead to reduced visibility during peak walking and driving times, especially in residential areas.
Always make sure to follow the pedestrian safety checklist this fall:
✓ Wear reflective and/or light-coloured clothing
✓ Carry a flashlight or use glow accessories
✓ Stick to sidewalks and marked crossings
✓ Make eye contact with drivers before crossing
✓ Avoid distractions like phones or headphones
✓ Keep children close and supervised
✓ Drive cautiously and expect the unexpected For more information and classroom resources regarding safe active transportation, visit our website.
Let’s keep our streets safe and welcoming for everyone to walk this Pedestrian Safety Month!
