I can't believe October is already here!

We are in full swing of reading intervention! Feels good to have the routine back in place. See below for Tips for Reading at Home and a peek into What's Happening in the Reading Room!

Hope you are enjoying these semi-cooler temperatures and beautiful Autumn colors as much as I am!

Reading Folders

Keep an eye out, we will have reading folders coming home SOON to those who receive Title Reading services! Inside you will find practice word lists, passages, etc. as well as a Reading Log for you as the parent/guardian to sign daily after practicing with your child.

Blending Visuals when Reading

I often use a color-code to help developing readers. I ask them to think of a Stop Light...green means "Go", yellow means "Slowww Down", and red means "Stop". I use this as a visual for students so they can picture how blending works in words.

Spelling Strategies and Visuals

When spelling/writing words, we use a few different strategies and visuals:
1. First, we stretch the words out slowly like a slinky so we can hear all of the sounds. We begin with our hands together at midline, then use our hands to stretch the sounds apart.

2. Next, we tap each of the sounds with a little pause between each sound. We tap using our index finger to thumb, the middle finger to thumb, ring finger to thumb, then pinky to thumb, and repeat for additional sounds in the word.

3. Last, we write the sounds (letters) as we say the sounds.

Tips for Reading at Home Tips for Reading at Home

A few tips on how to support your child's reading at home:

  • 1. Read a book with a Fall/Autumn or Halloween theme! If you don't have books with those themes at home, you can always borrow books from the library or listen to a story on YouTube!
  • 2. Celebrate Dictionary Day (October 16) - Use a dictionary to look up the definitions of 3 words that you don’t know. Write down the words and keep a lookout for them as you continue exploring new books.
  • 3. Blend or "Stretch" sounds in words when reading unknown words - Use the continuous blending strategy to stretch from sound to sound in a word (like a slinky). This strategy works for 3 letter words, as well as multi-syallabic words. See graphics. below.
