2026 Girls STEAM Celebration Here at HF 2026 Girls STEAM Celebration Here at HF

Homewood Science Center will host its annual Girls STEAM Celebration on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. right here at Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s state-of-the-art Net Zero Science Building. This inspiring event will welcome up to 100 middle school girls from James Hart and Parker Junior High for a day of exploration, empowerment, and real-world connection to careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM).

“Introducing girls to STEAM role models and educational pathways during middle school is

powerful,” said Edie Dobrez, Executive Director of Homewood Science Center. “When girls can

see women who look like them thriving in STEAM fields, they begin to envision those

possibilities for themselves.”

The Aesha Jackson STEAM Leader Award

At this celebration, there will be a cash award of $1,000 cash to a high school student who wins the Aesha Jackson STEAM Leader Award. Aesha is a HF alumna who passed away in 2024, but her legacy of innovation and mentorship lives on. This award seeks to honor her by elevating young STEAM leaders who inspire others--just as she did. Tonight at Brookwood: Learn About the Seal of Biliteracy Tonight at Brookwood: Learn About the Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school graduates who demonstrate proficiency in English and one or more additional languages. At HF, it aligns with our continued expansion of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs and our College & Career Pathways, supporting students as they build global competencies and real-world career skills. All Homewood-Flossmoor High School families are invited to attend Brookwood School District 167’s BPAC Meeting this evening, Thursday, March 5th at 5:30 p.m., to learn about the Seal of Biliteracy.

During this session, they will explain:

  • What the Seal of Biliteracy is

  • The requirements to earn it

  • How the program is implemented at HF and at Bloom

  • The academic and career benefits for students

The session is at Brookwood Middle School (200 E Glenwood Lansing Rd, in Glenwood,)

5:30-6:00 p.m. Dinner will be provided at 5:30 p.m and the presentation will begin at 6 p.m. Presenters include HF's World Language Department Lead Mr. Mike Camp and Bloom 206 Director of Language Acquisition and HF Alum and Board Member Dr. Ariana Leonard.

This session is open to all families and your children — you do NOT need to live within Brookwood 167’s boundaries to attend. If your student is multilingual or interested in earning the Seal of Biliteracy, this is a valuable opportunity to learn more and ask questions. We encourage HF families to take advantage of this collaborative, community-wide conversation about language development and student opportunity. RSVP Here to provide Brookwood with an estimated number of HF participants.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:

  • Effective Leaders

  • Collaborative Teachers

  • Involved Families

  • Ambitious Instruction

Your participation in the parent survey will help us guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
